| Check out this absolute car crash - Coventry Forum on 21:19 - Aug 17 by urbanpenguin | They seem really, really angry. Looking back two years before our return to the premier League I think everybody here was quite excited. They just seem fuming. What a weird way to be. |
Probably because they got tucked up by us twice and are secretly worried about our business. The louder people shout about how bad a signing is for a rival (at least a rival in trying to avoid relegation) club, the more worried they probably are. Makes me laugh anyway, it's not like every fan of every club isn't about to find out what will work and what won't, lol.

It's a horrible first game in terms of needing to avoid a thrashing to maintain confidence. Lampard would probably be tempted if you offered a battling 1-0 loss right now. |
Anything less than 4-0 would be a brilliant result for Coventry. Remember we beat them 3-0 last season. Really can see a thumping going down. Which might quieten down some of the Cov fans' delusions about quite how tough this league is.

I think if you want a measure of where the two clubs are at it's their discussion of Jack Rudoni. Coming up with that profile of player in 2024, we'd have absolutely thought exactly like them, yeah, this kid's time has come, he's going to be an absolute star, he's absolutely in the same league as all these established Premier League number 10s. I mean, we did, we thought Leif Davis would be do that (I mean, Leif broke the league assist record set by Kieran Trippier!). This time we've got players of a similar profile, who came up through the lower leagues and have looked great in the Championship but got to their mid-20s without playing in the Prem and now we're filling them as fringe players or players to discard. I kind of forgive them, I remember how we were last time and until you actually see it happen to your own team you do feel differently. I genuinely fear for them Friday though, if the Arse go out to make a statement it could get very bloody.

It would be good to be rid of that 9-0 monkey once and for all. Here's hoping...

With Plymouth and Coventry we were the money club threatening to ruin the fairytale. Let's be honest, we thought the same of Leeds in 2023/24. With Leicester and Leeds were were the upstarts who didn't know our place and threatened their immediate return. In the end, though we did pip Leeds, it didn't affect them that much. Leicester on the other hand...

I remember that 2-1 loss to Bournemouth being the moment all good vibes were lost for us in 24. That was a heartbreaker after not being able to get several over the line. [Post edited 17 Aug 16:27]

Everton at home was the day I realised the premier league wasnt going to go as well as we hoped. Everton was a team we expected to be able to beat, they started the season poorly and rhen came to Portman road and beat us without us laying a glove on them. I am going to enjoy seeing Coventry fans learn the hard way. Quite sad really as my Uncle was a Coventry fan and when we were relegated in the 90s I would always want to see them do well in the premier league

Yep. That Everton game was the day the hope died. It was painfully apparent how far short of the 'poor' teams we were.

My only connection is I’ve got a Subbuteo set of them in their iconic Admiral kit (minus Tommy Hutchinson’s ‘tasche) |
The away kit is arguably even more iconic; carrying the stripes down to the shorts is probably about as 70's as you can get

I don’t like what they did to the cathedral either. They should have rebuilt the original one, as the Germans did. The replacement was designed by Basil Spence, or was it Basil Brush? |
Frank Spencer, I always thought. Actually, no, that's their manager, isn't it. Come 10pm Friday: "I think we're in a liddle bit o' trouble, Betty." [Post edited 18 Aug 8:39]

They don't have to be concerned with how we wiped the floor with them both games though, because whatever happened last year has no bearing on this one.
| Check out this absolute car crash - Coventry Forum on 08:51 - Aug 18 with 1125 views | OldFart71 | Maybe it's just me but the older I get the less rivalry I find myself having towards other sides. Tbh I couldn't give a toss what other clubs do. Some I like more than others. For instance my favourite London club would be Tottenham. I like Everton more than Liverpool. I like both Manchester clubs. Not really keen on any midlands clubs. I suppose the only team I would like to drop off the end of the league are the Budgies. Norwich as a City is great. Far better than Ipswich. But put Green and Yellow together it would be like drinking two bottles of vodka. Make you very sick. | | | |

I thought we were a bit unlucky against Everton and the result dictated the narrative a bit on that one. They scored with about their only 2 chances and we didn't convert ours, other than that there didn't seem a lot in it. Brighton was a sobering one for me. We got a decent point but had Muric and some poor finishing to thank really. Other than Delap hitting the post it was one of the most 1 sided 0-0 draws I've ever seen and a proper reality check of what mid table premier league opposition looks like compared to ourselves. The home game was as bad.

We also humped them the season before in the FA cup on their own patch. They took 1 point off us and Southampton last season, and the cup game the season before was men against boys, against a side well short of PL safety. There must be a part of them thinking they've done incredibly well to go up and been ruthlessly consistent for the most part against the less strong Champ sides, but generally fallen short against better opposition, which has to be cause for some concern. Much like us when we went up in 2024 really, with the 2 defeats to Leeds and draws against Leicester, both of which could've very easily gone against us.

I only saw the home games so I’m probably being harsh, but for me every game I saw it felt for me like a lower league team playing a big one in a cup game. Up against it, hoping for the best. The only exception was the Leicester game where we played ok and dominated them until we ran out of steam and Phillips got sent off. I just didn’t feel we were competitive in any way. It was just the penalty of rising through the divisions so fast. I understood where we were as a club and that it’d be difficult but I was surprised at just how strong these clubs were/are. I don’t think one can appreciate that until you witness it first hand and that’s what Coventry and Hull will face. Maybe FLs Coventry will do what Sunderland did and ambush it, but I don’t think they’re strong enough either in personnel or the way they play. We will see.

Very much a consequence of the back to back promotions. Politely a huge chunk of that squad had never been and will never be Premier league players. Bar a few standouts like Hutchinson and Delap who will have careers there, the rest are largely back in league 1 or the Championship. No shade on them, but trying to compete at that level with Morsy, Luongo, Harry Clarke, Harness, Al-Hamadi, Chaplin etc was always going to be a tall order. There were a few impressive performances, Fulham, Villa and Chelsea at home spring to mind. For the most part the levels were very, very evident. Aside from the obvious ones like Man City and Arsenal, even the Spurs, Newcastle and Brighton games were an absolute humping and they didn't seem to get out of 3rd gear.

They've got pace and power across the board in that team and Lampard has managed in this division before. Ultimately, we don't know. They could be the next Sunderland. They could be the next Burnley and to a large extent, so could we. Fact is, we're having a good go at this window.

They have small memories, us and Leicester both nearly reached the 100 points barrier and still came down without a whimper. They did win league easily last season, but a below average one
