What was your first away game? 22:54 - Aug 18 with 3041 viewswiltshireblue

A video just popped up on facebook of the Bristol Rovers game in August 1991 at Twerton Park, Bath.

This was my first away game and 3-3, where we lost a 3-0 lead but what a great season it turned out to be.

I was 9 years old and went with my mum, the first game she tried buying tickets for - and ended up buying them in the Rovers end!. Made for an uncomfortable first half

Equally successfully is my first attempt at getting autographs after the game, so eager to get them I tried asking the first person out the door - who turned out to be the coach driver.

I do remember Devon White passing me his pint to hold whilst he signed, and i'm sure a pretty young Marcus Stewart. What very different days

I still have the programme somewhere with all the autographs from both teams, as well of course John Lyall

January 1973, FA Cup 3rd round away to Chelmsford City. My best mate at school got me a ticket as he worked helping the local milkman before school. His local milkman being the Chelmsford skipper Vic Gomersall.

I think it was Norwich in the early ‘70’s.
It was 0-0 if I remember correctly and we stood on the terrace by the halfway line. My dad took me with a couple of friends from school who were budgie fans. Hung my blue and white bar scarf over the wall in front of me. I’d have been eleven or so then.

Mine was there too One
04 Dec 1974 1-1draw in the League Cup, couldnt believe we managed to lose the replay to 2 Johnny Miller goals.... sent them into a semi final i was fully expecting us to be involved in@... first proper away outside East Anglia was a disappointing 3-1 defeat at QPR

Filbert Street for the FA Cup replays V Leeds. I'd have been 14. First games with my dad, second on the coach with some lads from school. I think there must have been some adult supervision but I can't remember any.

Arsenal at Highbury 76/77 I believe. We won 4-1. Keith Birchin scored a couple. We were in the Yellow away kit. Coach got bricked after the game and we had to take a couple of people to hospital. Quite an introduction to away days as a ten year old.

7 March 1981 the FA Cup Quarter Final at Nottingham Forest. A pulsating 3-3 draw.

I was mascot that season for the home league match vs Forest in January too.

Hull City, 16th December 1989, a few days after my 15th birthday.

A family friend from up the road took me on the yellow and green Eastern National coaches (Galloway came in towards the end of that season as they were cheaper)… I couldn’t believe we used these for away games.
Got halfway up the A1 and it came through on Radio 2 (Radio 5 started a few months later) the game was off due to a waterlogged pitch. The coach carried on the couple of miles to Grantham services for a cuppa and the Southend fans on their way to Grimsby we saw took the pee. How we laughed when we heard their game was then called off when we were nearly back home.

Tried again on 1st Jan 1990, it threw it down all day, we lost 0-5, most the team had been out the night before and there was an enormous traffic jam on the way home. The only saving grace was that we got there early enough to get in the seats, once they were full, everyone else had to go on the open terrace.
At 0-5, the soaking Town fans on the terrace decided to do the conga, so Staffs Constabulary decided to bring in the police horses.

Figured it couldn’t get any worse, so been going regularly ever since. Took me a few more games to see an away goal and then win away - after Vale, I joined the masses at Barnsley on another open terrace in the cup and we lost 0-2, then saw my first away goal from Mark Stuart (loan player from Plymouth) away to Watford, then saw my first away win on 1st Sept 1990 at West Brom, after being 0-1 down for ages, we scored twice in the last couple of minutes to steal a win, including a goal direct from a corner from Neil Thompson, the first time I’d seen us in the original Orange kit.

Next away game was Leicester, Stockwell’s double got us a 2-1 win and the Leicester fans shot out the window on one of the other coaches….

Probably said this before but I suspect yourself, Illy and I shared a lot of travelled miles together on those coaches back then.

I went to all those games you reference there, including the Hull no go.

Port Vale was a grind of a day. I had already nearly missed the coach depart due to a banging head from the night before (still 16 so a bit naughty). Heavy rain, 0-5, M6 roadworks on the way back. Vale Park did serve me the best burger I have ever had a football ground though. Five days later, it was a lot better at Elland Road as we dumped Leeds out of the Cup.

Portsmouth 1989 - 1-0 win. Remember how much barracking Graham Harbey got as wasn't used to a pile on from home games... ;o)

March 1967 Manchester City in the FA Cup 5th round. We drew 1 - 1 but had a goal disallowed in the last minute because Joe Broadfoot was in an offside position on the opposite side of the pitch and nowhere near where the goal was scored. I suppose on the bright side that meant we got out of the ground in one piece. Lost the replay a few days later at home 0 - 3.

Assuming Wembley for the FA Cup Final doesn't count (we stayed with friends in Wood Green and had to get the tube back packed with fuming Arsenal fans), then it was Grimsby in 1996. Clive Mendonca came back from injury, scored a hat trick and Tony Vaughan was sent off.

I've arbitrarily hated Grimsby ever since!

Amazingly, it's on YouTube: https://share.google/292IorSqM

This was also my first Town away game. I remember it being a very wet day and standing with a large group of Town fans in the side stand. That was my one and only visit to Maine road.

That was the previous year, April ‘76, in a 2-1 win at Highbury.

I'm pretty sure mine was the FA Cup 6th round second replay at Filbert Street in the 74/75 season. I was 12 and still made it to school the next day.

He did too!

We went to the game, my dad managing to get seats in the main stand. The locals were not happy when we wiped the floor with them. The bloke sitting next to the old man was even less happy when he told him he’d been at Highbury in 1962 when we crushed them 3-0.

An undocumented pre-season friendly against Third Lanark (RIP) in 1958. We won 8-0, attendance was 103 and a dog.

EDIT: Sorry, this was just a joke entry. Wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.

First for me was Chelsea in the FA Cup some time late 60s/early seventies.

Bob Shankly, brother of Bill, would have been their manager at the time.

Coventry away December time in the late 70s. It was my birthday present, seats in the main stand at Highfield Road. We lost 4-1 and Mick Ferguson, who was rumoured at the time to be a transfer target for Ipswich, scored all four. It was also the first time I saw Ipswich lose. I cried. On my birthday.

Stamford Bridge, 1970 - the goal that never was. To be fair I thought it had gone in too...but I was nowhere near as close to it as the referee.

Barnsley in the 4th round of the FA cup in January 1990. We lost 2-0 & played like sh1te, although the old Oakwell wooden stands were probably worse than our performance.

Highbury 1977, Arsenal 1-4 Ipswich - what a start! I was 10 years old and stood on the North Bank with my Dad as it was the nearest part of the ground to where we lived in Islington. I managed to keep a lid on it until the 4th goal went in and I let out a little whoop! Whereupon an old dear in front of me turned round and clunked me one with her handbag! I looked at my Dad and he just said “well son, there's a lesson to be learned there!”

Cheers,
JK
