| The O'Shea RB conundrum 23:50 - Sep 4 with 2112 views | portmanking | He puts in an admirable shift as you'd expect from our captain. BUT I can't help feeling like it's Luke Chambers all over again. Flogging him out there will do us no favours or his confidence. The problem is who do you put there instead? Ouattara looks far too slight to be a PL full back to me. [Post edited 4 Sep 23:54]

Furlong is decent defensively and would definitely do a good job, but he turns the ball over far too much. His forward passing is slightly north of shocking. We saw tonight how quickly turnovers are punished.

O'Shea has passing accuracy of 73% this season, against Liverpool it was 64%. He gave away 15 possessions last night. He is not a RB. We should get him back to CB before his confidence is shot. [Post edited 5 Sep 7:17]

| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 07:26 - Sep 5 with 1478 views | TractorWood | It was admirable but with Fatawu offering no cover he was hugely exposed. He lacks pace and the positional awareness for this level at RB and doesn't have an attacking bone in his body. Very unfair on him to play him there more than a couple of times. | |

| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 07:56 - Sep 5 with 1414 views | Len_Brennan | O'Shea is a better right-sided centre back than Diop, and Furlong is arguably a better option at right back for us, when you take his forward play & tracking back down the line in account, on top of his straight up defensive abilities. For me, in a back 4, it's O'Shea as right-sided centre half, with Diop as the back up (maybe shift one of them to left side, at a push, although I'd stick with Greaves), or else, play a back 3 of O'Shea, Diop & Greaves, with Quattaro & Davis as wing backs. | |

I don't think that's accurate with Fatawu to be honest, he works really hard to get back. Pretty sure it was him who played Isak onside for the 2nd while covering Kerkez. Fatawu definitely needs to work on that because on multiple occasions he ended up 5 yards beyond the back 4 playing everyone onside. If we want to stay up this season, O'Shea cannot be our right back. Gives the ball away far too often and goes chasing after balls he shouldn't be, pulling himself out of position.
| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 08:20 - Sep 5 with 1348 views | Paul | It seems that most football managers come with a weird way of doing something/playing someone in a slightly different position to their strongest role and for GON it looks like it is going to be persisting with O'Shea at RB. | | | |
| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 08:25 - Sep 5 with 1324 views | Dubtractor | Regardless of positions, though I agree about O'Shea at RB, our back four doesn't remotely look like a functioning unit just yet. Too easily pulled out of shape, doesn't comfortably link play with the midfield. That's my number one concern at the moment. | |

| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 08:30 - Sep 5 with 1294 views | TractorJack | I'm wondering if the plan is to ease Ouattara in with minutes in midfield off the bench but eventually he'll start at RB and Dara can move back to the middle. If that isn't the plan I can't fathom why we didn't sign a first choice RB. | | | |

No you are not. Furlong is a proper full back who rarely gets caught in the wrong position defensively. Distribution? Not his best feature but his first job is defending and besides, Roberto Carlos in his day wouldn’t be able to do much going forward with nobody to pass to that can hold the ball. O’Shea for all his talent, heart and work rate is at FB often in the wrong position and can get pulled all over the place. Much of their threat was that side. Fatawu offered no cover, no effective assistance. The lad stuck at it and can be a threat going forward. He’s very talented. But the partnership is wrong, Dara is our best CH and needs to play in his correct position. Play Furlong or Outtara, who I am told can play RB. The latter is immensely talented, tenacious and real player from what I saw. [Post edited 5 Sep 13:50]

| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 09:05 - Sep 5 with 1155 views | SamWhiteUK | That right side for me just didn't work yesterday. Fatawu was very hot and cold, and both him and Dara have the ball away countless times. Then there was one time where Fatawu was heading forward with the ball and Dara was trying to overlap, despite the fact that Fatawu was heading out to that wing, and Dara ran out of space. Then he stopped, just when Fatawu came inside. It was all disjointed | | | |
| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 09:37 - Sep 5 with 1080 views | ThatMuhrenCross | I'd put him at LCB alongside Diop and play Furlong at RB. Greaves is the one player that looks to have struggled the most with the step-up this season. | |

I think so, although we’ll never know for sure and he deserves a chance. He’s much stronger defensively than offensively, which could help. He’s not great (from what I can remember) at playing out quickly through a press though, so it could lead to us being pinned back even more at times. If we’re already micro-analysing individual players and positions, we’re in a bit of bother already. That tends to happen most when the team as a whole isn’t clicking.

He is a penalty waiting to happen though In all three games now, he's slid in close to and in our box and not won the ball

Diop in particular jumps out of the line, vacating too much space for Greaves to cover. Diop is also then slow to react and I've seen him jogging as opposed to sprinting back a handful of times. He's made a very unconvincing start for me.

He worked hard and stuck at it. Very talented with a bright future. But Last night Fatawu lost the ball countless times in the first twenty mins in bad areas, leaving Dara and the defence badly exposed. You cannot lose the ball cheaply in the Premier. If you do you will lose. [Post edited 5 Sep 14:02]

not saying I would keep playing him at RB, but a fun fact about O'Shea: he holds the record for the 12th fastest sprint in Premier League history (albeit records for for the stat only began in 2020)
| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 14:11 - Sep 5 with 704 views | blueoutlook | It’s simple. O Shea isn’t a RB. May as well play Furlong there , he isn’t the answer, but he knows the position and can defend. His passing though can be shocking. We spent all that money on midfield and attack and seemed to have forgotten all about the defence apart from Diop. 3/4 played last time in the Prem, they weren’t good enough then, why think they would be any better now ? | | | |
| The O'Shea RB conundrum on 14:14 - Sep 5 with 701 views | Nutkins_Return | We have just played Liverpool and Utd. It requires a sample size. He was excellent against Sunderland. To be honest he wasn't bad in any of the games. He's not new to RB either. He's attributes are well suited. Good defender. Gives us additional heading ability from set pieces at both ends. He's very quick (never fails to make me laugh when I have seen people say "he's not quick enough). | |

As usual you seem to have been watching the same game as me. So much possession given away as defence tries to link with midfield. Teams are built on solid foundations, solid foundations are about defence and we appear to have neglected strengthening sufficiently in that area. Watching Hull only serves to strengthen my feelings. It's going to be a long season I fear.
