| Russell Brand described as an actor and comedian 19:34 - Oct 14 with 3686 views | GlasgowBlue | Has he ever been funny? Other than the time he dipped into politics and one of our members followed him like a cult. That was funny. Reading today's court proceedings, what an utter scumbag he is. Doesn't seem to understand the meaning of the word "no". [Post edited 14 Oct 19:34]

| Russell Brand described as an actor and comedian on 09:32 - Oct 15 by Churchman | I’ve never understood why Brand has attracted any sort of following. He is about as amusing as a colonoscopy. From the 2014 link in this thread: ‘He is volatile, vulnerable, troubled, mercurial, but unlike most people in public life, he makes no attempt to hide it. His emotional honesty helps to explain his appeal, and his ability to inspire people who had switched off from politics.’. It was a popular view at the time. Yes, I get that he is left wing so is deeply fashionable and I suppose that carefully cultivated appearance helps. But I never saw him as anything but ignorant, boorish and plain dull. The dreadful Andrew Sachs affair showed him to be a pathetic bully too. Had I been a relation of Mr Sachs, Mr Brand’s career would long be over for that. I have deliberately not commented on the current trial. Like everyone else, he is innocent until proven guilty. [Post edited 15 Oct 9:47]

I do wonder if people who say he wasn't funny ever actually watched one of his stand up shows. I thought he was. I also enjoyed his Ponderland show on Channel 4 - that was funny and also nostalgic as it looked back on stuff from his and my childhood. Whether people liked his persona or not is subjective and entirely up to them. With the Andrew Sachs affair, I actually think that was mostly instigated by Jonathan Ross, who seems to almost be forgotten now when this gets brought up. I think Brand got swept up in it rather than being a bully or an instigator. I'm not defending any of the alleged misdemeaners, of course. And good to see that you, unlike the OP, believes in innocence until proven guilt.

Russell Brand hasn’t been ‘left wing’ for at least 10 years, arguably longer. He’s been a right wing conspiracy nutjob since at least Covid. A uni flatmate of mine was somewhat a fan of his whereas I always thought he was a tit.

Agreed . He’s anti-establishment populist. A controversialist. Originally a left wing populist, but as you say he’s been grifting off right wing populist conspiracies for years. Left /right isn’t really important or relevant, as much as the anti-establishment populism angle. That’s allowed him to effortlessly jump on the new wave of grifting conservatism. Much like 30p Lee or the herberts who went from Living Marxism to Spiked Online. [Post edited 15 Oct 12:57]

No, Flash, I’ve not seen him live and nor do I wish to. The bits I’ve seen on tv - I stand by what said earlier. As you say, it’s all opinions and fun that they differ. It’d be a boring old world if they didn’t. As for his political leanings, I stand corrected if he no longer what he was. Brand is somebody that if he or anything about him appears on tv I tend to switch it off. The poster who suggested that the Sachs affair might have been instigated by Ross (who I also dislike, despite him being good on Traitors) may be right or otherwise. It’s irrelevant. Brand took part and for me it was disgusting. [Post edited 15 Oct 13:16]

Seeing "bits on TV" isn't really how to judge anyone on anything TBH. You can't really say someone's a bad comedian if you haven't seen one of their stand up shows. It was me who mentioned the Sachs affair. You're quite right, he took part - but it was actually Ross who shouted "he slept with your grandaughter" and Brand got dragged into it through that. That's not to excuse it, but you didn't even mention Ross and said it was Brand being a bully.

I’ve seen enough of Brand on tv to know his ….entertainment…. Is not for me. I would never pay a penny to watch that live. As for his involvement with the Andrew Sachs affair, it’s summarised here. https://www.theguardian.com/cu If there is any truth to this article, Brand strikes me as at best a supine w&nker. Ross might have been a bigger bully but so what? It doesn’t change my view of Brand. No, I didn’t mention Ross because the thread isn’t about him. As it goes, I’ve avoided seeing anything with him in since the Sachs affair until Celebrity Traitors and will continue to do so. Just my view.

Fairy nuff, you're perfectly entitled to those views. There are various things I wouldn't pay to watch live... but I would appreciate I'm not getting a full picture in which to judge in that case. For example, I would never dream of going to see the musical My Fair Lady (or any musical for that matter). But me and Lady Dollers were given free tickets so thought we might as well, it's a night out at least! Anyway, we were surprised at how good it was (and how many of the songs we knew). I was making a wider point than Brand, TBH. You see a lot of comments on here about "Who on earth finds X funny?" and it's usually from people, like yourself, who admit they haven't actually seen them other than bits and bobs. It's like reading a paragraph of War & Peace and saying you don't like the book.

I've never found Brand funny, but there is no denying that fir a while he was hugely popular and on TV all the time. It wasn't just about lefties having a hero. He did briefly stray into left leaning politics, as he fell out of favour on tv and was trying to stay relevant, which is when most people started seeing him as a joke figure. For a long time now though, his politics and views have seen him appeal far more to those who would also look at the likes of the Tates or that pretend vicar Calvin Robinson.

I read two chapters of War and Peace and didn’t like the book (seriously). And believe it or not I’m reasonably well read! No, I saw enough of what Brand does to know it was not for me. Now somebody I detested, found embarrassing but thought clever was Dame Edna. And I saw him live too at a Black tie dinner doing the entertainment. Fortunately we were at the back as the poor mugs at the front got a verbal hammering. Saw Jasper Carrot live in similar circumstances and he was brilliant. Now a controversial figure I’ve only seen on tv but find funny is Eddie Izzard. Star Wars Lego Canteen is an absolute classic too. Musicals? My mum was an actress and was in loads of musicals, including My Fair Lady so I was dragged along loads of times. I really don’t like them much to this day.

If you haven't seen a full Eddie Izzard show I'd definitely recommend, especially the early stuff. • Live at the Ambassadors (1993) • Unrepeatable (1994) • Definite Article (1995–1996) • Glorious (1997) • Dress to Kill (1998) • Circle (1999–2000) All of them brilliant. The Death Star canteen sketch is in Circle.

Like there isnt a clearly established pattern of people using the church to cover their misedeeds and in of course the church itself covering then up. Brand Tommo Yaxley Lennon. I'm not religious, believe what you want. The only tome it annoys me is when its an affectation. Standing in the dock with your rosary beads claiming to be a defender of women and children when you know what the Catholic church has done around covering up abuse for example. | Russell Brand described as an actor and comedian on 15:23 - Oct 15 with 525 views | grow_our_own | I used to be a fan of RB. Found him funny, intelligent, edgy, and one of the most lucid, articulate speakers I've ever known. Strong on satirising celebrity culture and lampooning western drug policy. Never really liked his hard-left politics, but enjoyed him tearing into Nigel Farage on Question Time ("pound shop Enoch Powell"). Then he went to Hollywood and made an enjoyable comedy in Get Him To The Greek. But for whatever reason, his movie-star era was brief, and his career took a downturn. He went to Uni (SOAS in London), and I thought academia might suit someone of his (at least potential) intellect. But then he dropped-out, and rumours of his sexual transgressions started circling. He found comfort in the manosphere in the face of such allegations, allied with them, and horse-shoed from hard-left to hard-right. His podcasts became completely unlistenable, ranging from woo-woo spiritual psycho-babble to outright fascism. He completely dropped-off my radar ever since. Such a shame and waste of a talent. Yeah, pretty much my journey (hence Glassers' pop in the OP). He was awarded "Shagger of the Year" four years in a row by The Sun. I'm not saying they knew anything about him going too far, but their current reporting does feel a tad hypocritical.

He grifts on neo-con podcasts from what I can gather. I’m not sure how you make money from that other than convincing schmucks to bung you cash. Is Geldoff a bit of an arse then? I know nothing about him beyond his music.

There might be reasons his movie-star era ended up being brief, particularly with all that has gone on in that particular industry in recent years. I'm sure in the 70's he'd have found real fame and fortune there.

| Russell Brand described as an actor and comedian on 23:32 - Oct 15 with 63 views | ArnoldMoorhen | He had some technical skill as a comedian, a striking image, undeniable charisma and chemistry, and a way with words which meandered from the florid to the verbose, but was quite in fashion on the comedy circuit at the turn of the Millennium (see also Noel Fielding, Paul Foot, Simon Amstell and Ross Noble, amongst others). It was also glaringly obvious to anyone who listened to him for more than five minutes that he was utterly narcissistic and sex obsessed. (Neither of which are crimes in themselves). He sold out big theatres (not that I ever paid to see him) so to suggest he was anything other than a very successful comedian is a ridiculous act of revisionism. But that's hardly the point. Let's wait till the trial concludes and then judge him on what really matters. | | | |

I'm not sure that Russell Brand is an "idol of the left". He had shifted to being a libertarian talking head long before the documentary came out, and was last seen hanging out with ex Chief Scout and Muscular Conservative Christian Bear Grylls.
