These warnings to stock up in case of emergencies... on 15:51 - Oct 23 by Zx1988

I watched this the other week, which explains it quite well:

Global events - climate or otherwise - are going to cause supply chain shocks, and warehousing capacity is abysmal.

The easiest, and most prevalent, storage available is the spare space in people's cupboards.

The perils of our modern 'just in time' supply chain.

Ironically, they want US to stock up because THEY don’t build in any resilience.

It’s not just supply chains either; ‘they’ can refer to suppliers or government, as any resilience has been stripped out of all our public services too through ‘efficiency’ savings. It’s part of the reason COVID hit so hard. We’ve deliberately cut out all our capacity to deal with anything unexpected in order to increase profitability/cut costs.

It’s not just *after* disasters - it’s *preventing* disasters.

Had to spend 2 hours this afternoon clearing a ditch on the public road 100m above my house to prevent flooding into my house. Necessary once or twice annually. This & other such work in the countryside used to be dine by full time Council employees known as ‘waymen’, but no more since they were ‘ditched’, ho ho, inthe interests of cost-cutting about 20 years ago.

Instead, disabled pensioners in their 70s are now expected to do it. Their reward? A 3-fold rise in Council Tax.

Nor to mention the deliberate shrinking of the Environment Agency- don’t get me started on the folly of that …

Preparedness you say? Hmm, sounds expensive and/or difficult. What happens if the thing doesn’t happen? You’ve just wasted money and time in that case. Better to let things flood and then claim on insurance.

Obviously I’m being sarcastic, but that seems to be the mindset now. Yeah, I’m not sure the EA serve much of a purpose now.

It is very sensible to stock up on essentials to survive for a few days if the internet / electricity / gas / water supply were to be unavailable, or if the local shops ran out of food or were unable to accept electronic payments.

The threats are definitely growing with Russia being emboldened due to America's actions under Trump and agitating NATO, forthcoming elections across Europe which could usher in more Putin-friendly governments, AI starting cyber attacks, social media spreading misinformation, climate change causing heatwaves, fires, flooding etc, civil unrest in some countries such as France, Middle East tensions causing issues around the world...the list goes on.

I'm also very worried about these aliens J2 keeps going on about, what if they have twenty rectums and a state of permanent diarrhoea ? The shops are gonna be out of bog roll by the lunchtime of the invasion, in fact I reckon that is the reason they will migrate here, and they will come in on small spaceships and if they get into trouble I bet the RAF will try and help them out...

Pissing in the wind imo. Let’s say your house is flooded: you’re not going to be there to use any supplies. Wildfire? Supplies are burnt along with house. Civil unrest? Always highly localised unless you’re talking all out civil war and then it’ll be looter’s heaven anyway. Nuclear holocaust? At that point there’d be nobody around to care.

The whole thing is utterly bizarre, but I’m sure people will buy into it. The risks are real, but if our response to something like climate change (in the week we announce new gas drilling licences) is to ask people to buy some tins of soup we may as well all just give up now. It’s performative nonsense.

Me neither. Was downplaying it a bit because of the way this forum can be.

The most common claimed experiences seem to be with the greys but a lot of people suggest they are under the control of Reptilians and Nordics. There is a small part of me that thinks what are the chances...reptiles/dinosaurs were here long before us and were wiped out...apparently. The Nazis were obsessed with space and made huge advances with lots of their scientists moving over to the US when the war ended. Then we have the blonde blue eyed Nordics.

It's such a fascinating subject. There is a fascinating story of one man who had an experience where he saw Ironman or something like that and then later under hypnotherapy he saw what it really was. That made me look back on something from my childhood when I saw this fooker walk through my bedroom

I realise in just a couple of posts I now seem completely unhinged

Oh dear.

The idea that aliens came here and somehow, despite that extraordinary technology, crashed, is bizarre.

The idea that they came this far, and needed to abduct and mess with people to research us is equally bizarre.

As is the idea that governments are hiding stuff. What on earth for?

It is highly likely that there is other life out there. But if there is, it is a very very long way away, and anything advanced enough to travel those distances would be like gods to us, not like little green men in flying saucers that happen to look a bit like people in the 50s imagined they would be.

My old man used to do the exact same out the front of his every couple of years to prevent both his front garden and the road from being flooded.

Got a right rollocking off a highways agency bloke one year while doing it, and then proceeded to give him the benefit of his lived wisdom back and was eventually 'let off'

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

They are only asking people take some very basic resilience measures such as having three days of food and water in the house. In recent years my house has had a power cuts, payment systems went down at the local supermarket (so only people with cash could pay for their shopping), and let's not forget the pandemic.

Back in the day my parents and grandparents always had candles in stock, providing light and heat in a power cut. We forget things like that nowadays.

I’m a cynic, government keeping people in fear is good for them. Maybe another effort to push digital ID, stop protests, or other authoritarian ideas. Maybe they are scared from the riots in Europe - I’ve not seen such hysteria from other governments.

Certainly not going to lose any sleep, or stock up on baked beans and bog roll.

Why the -7 for this post?

Scaremonger the public, then when nothing happens they can claim what a great job they have done to avert it. In the mean time taxes up as the numpties stockpile everything.

That's why I keep some dry/longlife foods, water, wind-up radio/torch, solar light, spare clothes & camping gear in my car! (parked about 5m away from house).

Some of us boomers and countryside dwellers whose infancy was during rationing; and childhood when there were few phones (landlines of course) have long been of a prep mindset, in the sense of keeping contacts stored in hard copy like a physical address book; a small amount of £cash/notes, & 3 weeks worth of food in freezers & cupboards,

The funny thing about AI is that people simultaneously laugh at the badly-produced slop infesting the internet and are terrified at its supposed all-conquering genius.

you see the interesting thing about the PHP issue we discussed last week, is a php compromised website could have been used for a remote code execution exploit, AI models like Anthropics Claude or OpenAIs model 1 can do very interesting things with such exploits, that are not what the AI programmers intended or expected

whilst everyone laughs at the funny AI picture generation, and assumes thats all ai can do, but you should be terrified of what the real high level ai is capable of doing, its already capable of coordinating ai agents into swarms to increase cracking problems quicker, breaking its guard rails, designating tasks/goals to other ai agents, often at odds with their primary tasked goals, and initiating communication channels amongst itself to share their knowledge.

and then deleting the majority of logs and evidence of it to hide what it was doing from human oversight...

this is what OpenAI wrote in their report on their own AI model following what was called the Hugging face security incident

"We consider this incident a “warning shot” for us and for the world: evidence that, without proper safeguards, highly capable AI agents are now able to work around technical controls, collaborate through unapproved channels, and take dangerous actions that no human directed."

now consider what might happen if such ai were to fall into the hands of a bad faith or state sponsored actor.

https://openai.com/index/huggi

doesnt sound so funny now does it. though I doubt this is whats concerning the government, as none of them have shown the remotest levels of tech knowledge to understand this

Wouldn’t that work against bad faith actors themselves too, as even they wouldn’t be able to control their own bots and systems?
