Absolutely.

I wouldn’t want to say if they’re better or not, but they’re clearly players who Cook rates and believes he can get a tune out of.

On paper, yes. Time will tell but I think there is a structure in place off the pitch to make sure that we have every chance to get it right on the pitch too.

Probably... and at a decent age/stage of their careers to be the more senior players but with years ahead of them rather than being 30+

In as much as they have proven themselves at a higher level then yes, absolutely.

But that’s not to say some of those who played for us last season won’t go on to do the same! But for what we need right now then these seem like an upgrade to me. Not yet the statement or Marquee signings I think we hope for, but a decent start.

In theory, Downes and Evans should make for a sound central midfield pairing behind a number ten and there’s a reason why Burns was courted by Championship clubs. So, again in theory, yes.

They are two players who will be ear-marked for a role in Cook's team, and who will be able to play withbthe intensity he requires. Not necessarily better players, but likely to be much more effective. Bring it on!

I very much hope so. I'll trust Cook on that - he obviously thinks so. In Evans' case, he knows his temperament and work ethic, and clearly rates him on that front, so even if his footballing ability is similar to what we had, I'm still very content.

What I would say is that these signings fall into the "best we can reasonably expect" category, which is good enough for me. If we land one big signing that falls into the 'how the hell...?' category, then even better. But Batistuta's probably a little on the 'veteran' side these days...

That is a good point. Signing individually good players is not as wise as signing players that work together in the system the club is playing and suit the manager's philosophy on how to play. It is interesting we have offered Edwards a new contract and signed 2 Welsh players. MM was successful with gathering an Irish contingent too.

2 down, 10 to go. Evans is supposed to be pretty good but no clue on the other bloke, although he seems tailor made for Cooks system.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Evans and Downes as a midfield pair looks really good to me.

The only Muff in Town.

He is building his team with his players to play the way he wants, so yes, better than what we had. If they can last more than 45 mins without needing resuscitation that’ll be a start.

Without him giving anything away from his interview Kieron Dyer’s clearly excited about what’s happening and that’ll do me.

Whether or not their ability is any better than some of our current players remains to be seen. The most important thing is that they come with a fresh mindset, not tainted by the under-achieving malaise that we’ve had around the club over the last few years. Hopefully heralds the start of a new chapter.

I see it as 2 really positive early signings. Hopefully more to come.

Clearly not as lightweight as last season's alternatives

If there were fears of how recruitment was going to go.. these 2 should start to calm those nerves imo.

Even if they weren't better on paper - they both know Cook, and they have everything to prove. That sense of energy will be massive by itself.

If they can...

1) Pass forwards instead of just sideways or backwards
2) Do more than 10 keepie uppies
3) Last more than 180 minutes without getting injured

Then I'd say it's an upgrade.

Yes totally, change is definitely needed after 3 abject seasons. Time to bring in new faces, motivation and changing the being average is fine mentality.

More than likely better than what we have already. The manager who has won three promotions must know what he is doing.

They're both a modest upgrade on what we've got, yeah. I think we'll need a few from the notch above to be bothering top 2, but a good start.
