Palmer or Slicker on Saturday? 21:18 - Feb 3 with 3461 viewsLeistonBlue

Surely we give Palmer a chance to bed in ahead of league action. Or does Kieran still decide to give slicker a (well deserved) opportunity?

EDIT: Is he cup tied?

He’s not cup tied and I think we should start him and go with

Palmer

Godfrey
Woolfenden
Burgess
Townsend

Phillips
Taylor

Philogene
Broadhead
Clarke

Hirst

S A Monk

Palmer should definitely play. I’m torn between playing most of our first team so he, and they, can get a chance to gel better in a slightly less pressured game (although we should not disrespect or underestimate a very good Cov team and manager)...or resting the first team to avoid knocks and getting some game time for those you name. Think I’m leaning slightly towards the resting option as that team looks decent and could be a rehearsal for a league game next season..

Surely Palmer must be signed as first choice (excl. Walton)? Muric needs a little rest for a while. Not sure if he will start on Saturday and if that match would give him much over a weeks worth of training.

Palmer should start so he can get experience in the system McKenna wants.

We haven’t signed Palmer as back up.

He’ll be our new starter, beginning on Saturday.

RIP Sir Bobby

Slicker for me.

He's deserved a go, and although I know a lot of us are resigned to relegation and think the cup is a focus, I'm sure Kieran isn't.

Palmer can 'get used to McKenna's system' in training

Palmer starts imho and he needs as many of the first choice defenders as possible to start building some understanding so both Greaves and O Shea start. I can understand the logic of resting Axel and Lief

I thought Slicker was going to get the Bristol Rovers cup game and didn't. On that basis, I'd be surprised if he played this game.

It'll be Palmer or Muric.

Me too. I feel sorry for Slicker but if he’s reserve keeper then that’s where he fits in.
So it’ll be Palmer otherwise what’s the point of signing him

But surely you wouldn't want to risk Palmer picking up a knock in a cup game? It is a difficult one, as you do want to bed-in Palmer as quickly as possible, but it would be ironic if we sign him to help avoid relegation, then lose him for X games due to an injury in a cup game.

Why do people think Slicker is ready?

He joined to continue his development, it's very rare that a keeper of his age starts for a first team let alone a Premier League team. He could come good but to throw him into the fire at this stage (PL not cup games) would be madness.

Slicker or Muric for me. It's not worth risking an injury to play him with teammates he's unlikely to be playing alongside following weekend. Let him settle in, get to know his defenders and then make his debut against Villa.

Yes, but Saturday IS a cup game.

I would have thought Muric plays and Palmer starts vs Villa.

It will certainly be a big tell re KMc's plans going forward.

Usually the 2nd choice keeper will play the cup games to have a run out, which is why I was surprised Slicker didn't play as Muric had played a lot of minutes and Walton was back in goal in the league.

He's not cup tied. He didn't feature in the loss to Bournemouth.

I would go with Palmer, he's ahead of Slicker, so it is an opportunity to provide him with minutes and integrate him in - Slicker I am sure is aware of his current position within the club.

Palmer
Godfrey-Woolfenden-Burgess-Townsend
Morsy-Luongo
Johnson-Taylor-Philogene
Hirst

Jack Clarke has to start over Johnson. Philogene can go over to the right.

We've bought him to be number 1, the sooner he's playing and getting used to the team and set up the better.

Muric is done, Walton is injured and Slicker needs a season on loan somewhere.

Without it sounding in any way disrespectful, I think we’ve seen enough of J.Clarke - he looks a long way away.

Philogene more importantly needs the minutes, Hull ST holder said he is far far better as a left sided player, would want to see him get good minutes in that role.

I think it's very premature to say we've seen enough of Clarke. This is a player with 24 Championship goals in the previous two seasons. Playing him against that quality of opposition is another great opportunity to push towards further development. He looked v good against Rovers, need the same again.

Equally, the injury to Wes means Philogene is much much more likely to occupy the right hand side for large parts of the rest of the season. Hutch is not going to be involved so he's the only out and out RW we have for the time being.

Palmer should and likely will start but I wish people (not you OP) would stop saying Muric is done.

He probably is for this season but learn from Hladky. Muric could well be a key part of next season's Championship team if we do go down. No player should ever be written off.

Truly impaired.

Id be far more worried about Delap starting and having an injury setback.

Get him in, get minutes into him within our formation, even if it's a completely different back four to the one we'll have against Aston Villa.
Hopefully Szmodics will be back & ready for a place on the bench at least too; we could do with him in the match day squad for game at Villa Park.

Palmer
Godfrey, Woolfenden, Burgess, Townsend
Phillips, Taylor
Philogene, Broadhead, Clarke
Hirst.

Well both…
However as the transfer window is open you’d think we’d defo be bringing in a third striker
