There is something to be said for an offshore asylum centre where people can be housed whilst their claims are bing handled, but Ascension Island is a bit of a trek. How about Fair Isle or Soula or somewhere like that. Or maybe they could use some of the cruise ships that are currently floating about off Weymouth. Has to be better than keeping people in detention centres like the one at Harmondsworth.

Otherwise you just move all the current problems (mistreatment of detainees, mental health issues, desperation, suicide attempts) to another geographical location without actually solving them. Even, by putting them further out of sight, they are simply swept under the carpet.

Otherwise you just move all the current problems (mistreatment of detainees, mental health issues, desperation, suicide attempts) to another geographical location without actually solving them. Even, by putting them further out of sight, they are simply swept under the carpet.
On an island they could at least have access to the open air and some degree of freedom which would be a major improvement. Though I doubt that was the home secretary's intention.
Ascension Island itself is interesting though, it was basically treeless when discovered and the Victorians decided to import plants from all over the world so it's a huge mixing pot of different species. Obviously this has caused havoc with the native flora but has shown possible ways of introducing new ecosystems to locations (Mars has been mentioned) by basically dumping loads of different flora there and letting them compete until they reach a balance.
