Lockdown achievements 11:30 - Nov 11 with 4521 viewsclive_baker

Has anyone achieved anything in 2020 that they're particularly proud of as a result of having a bit more free time on their hands? Whether it be due to furlough, breaks from employment or saving time on a commute?

I told myself in "lockdown 1" that I would use the 10 hours per week I'll get back from commuting to learn French but it hasn't really got going. I was sh1t at it at school and I still am now. Without immediate gratification I tend to lose interest quickly and haven't given it the attention it needed over summer. Turns out it wasn't not having enough time that's prevented me doing it for the past 10 years worth of new years resolutions :)

I found a Facebook group that shows daily bootlegged Jeremy Kyle episodes. Aside from that, no.

I am about 4 weeks from handing in my dissertation and effectively finishing a degree, 17 years after initially starting one - has been a challenge alongside having 2 children during the course, but am really at the end of my tether with it....!

I was thinking about this earlier and the answer is "not really".

I have not been cycling as much as I probably should given I don't have to do the commute to work and I meant to do a few online courses but haven't done it.

I have been working on my cooking a bit though which has been good. Having a bit more time to make more complicated things is nice.

Put on weight during lockdown 1, which I then managed to lose again, plus a bit more during June/July/August. Been my lowest weight in god knows how long, feels quite good.

Started to learn German again, no idea why, just felt like it. Wouldn't say I'm fluent, but I could probably just about get by if I ever go abroad again to a German speaking country (have been Berlin, Vienna and Lucerne in the past, so would've come in handy then!).

Lastly, work has been quite amazing for us. In the 25 years my boss has been doing this, it is the busiest we have ever been. Feel very fortunate, given the current pandemic, but we seemed to have benefited greatly from it supplying many cabins across the country for the COVID test centres on top of our normal work which has gone through the roof. Given my role within the business now, it has been quite rewarding seeing us grow these past few months and long may it continue in to 2021.

Started posting on twtd again after 15 or so years away. Not sure that counts as an achievement though!

More seriously, I took up running again after really letting myself go for a bit. Aged 42 I set a new 5k PB, beating the times I could do when I was in my mid-30s. Pretty pleased with that, although I'm currently in the process of letting myself go again!

Managed to attract 2 (I think, tho never seen em together!) hedgehogs into garden, first I've ever seen in 6 years in new house, possibly as a result of being the instigator of installing a field gateway into a previously unbroken 1/2 mile long solid stone wall - allows the hogs to now travel across from a wood 2 fields away.

Putting out food specifically made for hogs wich is still being taken every day, and creating 2 cosy homes from masses of tree branches (pruning them was a fun job that needed doing anyway) will I hope lead to residency during the forthcoming hibernation period!

Edit: For those not in the know, hedgehogs are now an endangered species, which is absolutely shocking, esp for those of us who grew up in an era when there were hordes of 'em running around. Please do all you can to help them -

I guess staying busy at work is an achievement.

Not much personally to be honest but spending more time with my daughter whilst working from home & her nursery being shut was nice. Spent far too much of my additional spare time sorting a house move which has been more stressful than I ever imagined it would be.

Not massively to be honest.

Garden looked ace in the summer as I spent lots of time on it. I've stayed in decent shape against all odds.

I'm now doing 3 radio shows, and the one focused on new music is getting real traction with a lot of bands and agencies actively sending me music for consideration. This is something I am proud of tbf.

I have had a few moments of thinking I really should have achieved something useful this year though!

Took up running (most mornings, around Cry Pal park which is just over 3 miles) and done lots of cooking (turned veggie during the week). Moved in with the Mrs. just before lockdown 1 and we haven't killed each other, so that's an achievement of sorts!

Been continuing writing my book about giving up booze for a year. Hoping that's gonna be finished soon (been through it about 4 times improving things but it's hard to know when to stop!) Also got a permanent and well-paid job just before lockdown 1, after a few years of freelancing, so that was amazing timing. Looking very likely to get made redundant but on the plus side I have been earning during a pandemic (which I probably wouldn't have been if I was still freelance).

So overall it's been fairly successful.

Forgot to say, this is an excellent thread idea. Good to see some positivity!

Dropped 2 trouser waist sizes, am now the waist size I was in my early twenties 30 or so years ago. Think this equates to a stone and a half, though have only recently taken to weighing myself.

Who knew that furlough, then redundancy would be so good for me?

Pay off means not stressed about finding another job for 5 or 6 months, though the sooner the better so I can treat myself to a new car... But having been rejected for 2 jobs for which I had the right experience (16 years of), somehow think 2021 could be depressing.

I have a conditional offer of work from April BUT need to pass a fitness test... probably need to lose another 2 stone to do this comfortably.
