Hardly news that he didn't want to play there.

Cook would've come under pressure whoever he left out or played out of position. His fault or not, a big shame.

A bit like when Mick had Murphy, McGoldrick, Pitman and Sears at his disposal. But with Cook it was Chaplin, Celina, Fraser and then 5 games in he thought Harper was best as a number 10.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

Of course it's a shame and we will have lost a good player in Fraser. Well proven in this league prior to joining us.

Cook would have come under pressure but that was his problem. Too many players were signed.

DIdn't Fraser have games in the middle and didn't impress. The new manager has come in and hasn't played him (was he injured?)

Anyway, he sounds like a bit of a baby to me.

Feel like Fraser's various comment about his position have largely just been special pleading about his general lack of form at Ipswich. I never saw him playing "left wing", Cook's forwards on left and right tucked in, the width came from the full backs.

Fact is, wherever we played him along that 3 he struggled to get on the ball and impact games. If you're an attacking midfielder in that situation and you're splitting hairs about whether you're the Left Inside Forward or the Number 10 or you think you should really be a Number 8 on the left of a three, you're asking the wrong questions about yourself and the team.

Fraser is never a left sided wide player and doesn't fit into a 4-2-3-1 which Cook rigidly employed.

Stick him in a midfield three with a defensive destroyer and a box to box player and he'd be fine.

Well I have to say for someone who never played left wing I spotted him often, when he actually played, right next to my touchline seat, and taking throw-ins.

You'd have seen him out by the left touchline when he was playing for Burton too. He wasn't complaining then:

Why are the board pressuring the manager to pick certain players? I don’t care if he cost nothing, if they benefit the team they get selected, if they don’t they don’t play. The board and CEO should stay well out of this.

All a bit whiny if you ask me. You don't get this with Celina. Stick him on the left and he just gets on with it, finds more space to exploit and can read the game and cut inside whenever he needs to.

Well rid if his whinging since he left is anything to go by. I can't imagine him lifting the mood in the dressing room.

The comments in the other article quoting McKenna are quite telling as well, that he wanted to be a nailed-on starter and a big name at another club.

I'm sure he's a nice enough chap, but there seems to be a bit of an ego there as well.

I agree, we need a team going forward to get us out of this division , which seems to be passing us by for yet another season. At least the schoolteacher is weeding out the bad eggs now to give us a chance next season.

Not just too many players but an unbalanced squad that did not fit entirely with the rigid system Cook was playing. Some will use that to argue (without any real evidence) Cook was not in charge of who came in. It is telling that Cook was talking about further wholesale changes needed in January but McKenna has come in, got results with who he has, and only tweaked the squad.

Cook was a dreadful man manager here. I can only imagine that Richardson did the man managing and the tactics when he was successful. Which then rather begs the question, what exactly is Cook's managerial strength?!

It never ceases to amaze when former players and managers spill publicly about their previous clubs. It serves no benefit to them whatsoever.

I wish them both well for the future.

Think it's fair for a player to respond when the current manager has spoken of you first tho no? Also, considering alot has been said about his lack of contribution, I see nothing wrong with pointing out he wasn't used as he has been during his successful spells only last season.

This ' no real evidence' is quite interesting tbh

We've got 2 players. Fraser and Harper. Both in their interviews stating how they view their best positions. Both in a 3 man midfield. ( or in fraser case sometimes a 10)
Yet Both didn't suit PCs as you say very rigid 4 2 3 1.

And in one interview PC even said they maybe had found a position for Harper. Everything about it all highly suggests they weren't PC chosen players.

Again it doesn't really matter. But I think people shunning the idea about the recruitment, do need to be open to it, as more and more of the evidence you speak of, comes out over time.

I may have misjudged some of his comments because I can't find anything as obvious as I thought he had said but:

“There are areas where we clearly know we have to improve on and within that personnel around the club that might feel safe sometimes, but that’s not how it works at big clubs.” after his penultimate match

Cook: We Ended Up Losing a Game We Couldn’t Lose 1st Dec 2021 23:19
Town boss Paul Cook was left frustrated that his side once again got themselves into pole position and let that situation slip as they were defeated by Arsenal’s U21s on penalties to exit the Papa John's Trophy, citing individual errors. 58

And after the last league match: "I’m still searching to put that team on the pitch that I trust, the supporters trust and even the players probably themselves trust." https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/paul-cook-itfc-quotes-revisited-853621

And then also: "You'd be a fool to say you never saw that coming following and supporting us," said Cook. "What have we really learned from quarter to eight onwards tonight that we didn't already know before the game? Not a lot. It's where we're at. The fans maybe thought we'd have one window and it would all be magic. It’s obvious that we're going to need more time."

I can't easily find much more than that but I got the distinct feeling he wasn't happy with the squad and that he was going to change it again.

Not wholesale changes perhaps but a number of specific players that probably would not fit the remit of the direction we want to go. I know he wanted to sign Nathan Byrne and Chey Dunkley. Basically trying to recreate his Wigan team and keep ramming home Plan A with no Plan B to get more out of what he already had.

I think the problem is both blokes did so well elsewhere that it massively colours their time here either way.

Fraser never did enough to really force a change thought, a lot like Harper in some ways they were brought in to do one thing and either had their chance snuffed out by a bigger investment or were chopped and changed to support them.

All very poorly handled.

He scored 14 goals last season with 9 of them being penalties iirc. We must average about 3 penalties a season so when you took that away he scored 1 more goal from open play than Teddy Bishop. Never understood the fanfare with his signing, first game i saw him play was Burton where not only did he miss a penalty, he failed to pull the ball back to Barry to score a tap in. He didn't really get any better than that. Too slow, nice feet but doesn't create enough once he's got space to do so. I think there's just a lot of people desperate to say they said x player is amazing, when clearly at this level these players are fairly limited. Apart from Wesley, what a man!

Although you’d expect us to win way more etc

Think it’s his range of passing and creativity that rightly got people excited after we’d been so pedestrian, then dismal.

There aren't many in this squad that could pick a pass as easily as Fraser let alone perfect the weight of pass. Celina for example is great at the worldlie moments. But 5 out of 6 easy passes get intercepted.

This is my biggest gripe with letting him go, no one else has shown the same ability when he comes to passing ability.
Absolutely he has weaknesses. Speed etc being one. But that's why he's suited in the roles he speaks off. Which unfortunately even under KM, we don't play that way.

He's a miss. He will no doubt end up again top end of league 1 passing stat tables etc, it's a real shame imo.
