Edmundson Completes Boro Move
Saturday, 25th Jan 2025 11:30

Centre-half George Edmundson has completed his permanent move to his former loan club Middlesbrough.

As TWTD reported on Thursday, the 27-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Blues set to receive £600,000, some short-term top-ups, then £350,000 if Boro are promoted and a further £500,000 if they then stay up.

Edmundson, who spent the first half of the season on Teesside, was the subject of two failed bids from the Championship side with the Blues activating a 24-hour recall clause in his season-long loan on Monday, meaning he was unavailable for the 2-0 victory over Tony Mowbray’s West Brom the following day.

The two parties continued discussions, however, and a deal was agreed on Thursday evening with Edmundson undergoing a medical yesterday. The move was completed too late for him to face Preston at Deepdale today.

The Mancunian was out of contract with Town at the end of the season when he would have been able to leave on a free transfer. As he had played for both the Blues and Boro this season, he could only have moved to the Riverside during this window.

The ex-Oldham defender joined Town for around £1 million from Rangers in the summer of 2021, signing a four-year deal.

In total, he made 71 starts and four sub appearances while at Portman Road, scoring once, and was a member of the squad which won back-to-back promotions.

Sad to see the fridge go. Was one of my favourites in the team during the Paul cook season. Done well to get himself a move after a successful loan at a decent championship squad. All the best

We won the game of 'chicken' we played with Boro, but it could have gone horribly wrong for us. In total we received a guaranteed £100k more than the last bid before the recall, and maybe ten-fifty thousand more in easy top-ups. Looking forward to when we're an established Premier League team and do not have to engage in this nickle and dime type stuff.

I very very very rarely comment on the comments section but I can't remember seeing a more ridiculous post the the one above from tractor boy in HK. Imagine getting annoyed by the club getting a much better deal. Ashton has consistently done excellent deals both buying and selling and to come on and post about getting a better deal negatively because we might not. Unreal.

Sad to see him go, an important part of the last two seasons. Wish him every success, apart from against Ipswich in the Premier League next year !! (Here's hoping)

I liked Fridge. He kept his cool when all around was chaos. Steady and dependable without ever being spectacular - the sort of player that every successful squad needs. i wish him all the best.

Good deal for all three parties I think! We got a fee for a player we aren’t going to use who will leave for free in 5 months. Fridge is getting regular football and is obviously wanted there.

Think Boro have got a top Championship quality, experienced defender for less than million!

Just goes to show how silly Premier League money is though. Not so sure he’s that much 10 times worse than Greaves or O’Shea (when you compare the fees)!

Good luck and thanks George, you played a big part in our comeback as a Club and will I’m sure you’ll get a big applause from our fans if/when you visit PR again!

So we've got a better deal for him than what was on the table before we recalled him, a move that was roundly criticised by the armchair experts on here! Maybe next time a few more will trust Ashton knows what he is doing.

And then there were five...

Five players are now left from the 19 players from Paul Cook's "Demolition Man" 2021 summer transfer window: (Burns; Chaplin; Burgess; Walton and Morsy).

The one thing that stood out with Edmundson, was that he was the only one of the 19 who signed a four year contract, so he was a big signing at the time.

I'm sure he goes with all our very best wishes. He has served us very well.

Tracrorboy in HK. The add ons, if all achieved, will put the fee to over £1m. So why talk rubbish about them being £50k

Agree Botesdale Blue, was thinking the same lines that we haven't got many of the Paul Cook intake left, and those that are have done well in moving from League 1 to Premiership level. Thanks George, you have done well for Town and best luck with Boro.

A great character in the changing room I'm sure - what a shame, but really - a good move for the lad.

All the best, Fridge.
