If Johnson pulls a stunt like that, his government will last about 5 minutes after Parliament is subsequently reconvened.

Only 3 minutes would be better ...

Not convinced about that. I tend to think it will be a hung Parliament, with the current alliance of Conservatives + DUP unable to command a majority. Best chance of a government might be some sort of LD-Lab-SNP-Green pact, tho it's debateable whether Corbyn would be acceptable as leader of that.

"some sort of LD-Lab-SNP-Green pact" - plus a few moderate Tories.

I can see huge swathes of normally not bother to turn-outers, floating voters & middle-grounders, who are understandably worried about extremes, go for that & obtain a very workable majority - IF Corbyn could be persuaded to stand down & someone competent & generally acceptable take his place.

If this was happening in South America you would see it for what it is: a foreign backed rightwing coup.

Let's recap.

1. Dodgy referendum won with illegal foreign donations and illegally harvested data used to carry out a black ops and untraceable propaganda campaign online
2. Ultra hardline interpretation of a 52:48 2:2 result presented as the only true brexit, with any dissenters labelled criminals, traitors, saboteurs, enemies of the people, etc
3. Hardliners in Parliament vote down every attempt to deliver brexit, and blame "remainers" for the impasse
4. Johnson crowned PM by about 90,000 people
5. A new government formed of brexit ultras (only no dealers need apply), Britannia Unchained authors and Vote Leave campaigners
6. Former Tory leader, IDS, calls behaviour of polticians trying to stop no deal brexit "criminal"
7. Johnson Government seeks to suspend Parliament at height of most significant moment in British politics in most people's living memory

Yoinked from a comment on the Guardian website, but i thought this summed it up quite neatly.

Well, this is a sorry mess. Johnson seems to be taking matters into his own hands rather than go with democracy. There is one problem though : if he goes back to parliament then all this hideous arguing between MPs on ALL sides will continue and we will be going round in circles again. Labour and the Tories can’t agree amongst themselves with lots of in party fighting - let alone agree a suitable outcome to Brexit. Reality is some want to leave and some want to remain. Seems no better than 50/50. Then the other problem is what happens if MPs force Johnson out - it seems few inside Westminister want Corbyn as a Caretaker PM and the polls don’t suggest Labour would win an election, let alone get a majority. Other parties have been clear that they wouldn’t back Corbyn.

It is indeed a mess.

There is no legal mechanism to challenge the ‘decision’ either. But a legal challenge of the advice given to her by her PM is however an option.

With the Soviet Union it was a problem with the system (authoritarianism) rather than the geographical area. It is something which can afflict small nation states, too (e.g. Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea).

Large states/federations can be (relatively) benign, also (e.g. India, the USA, the EU).

I doubt anyone can name a nation/bloc which is perfect, but scale is not the problem, governmental style is.

Geographical area is not a problem if the people in the East, South, North and West are fairly homogenous people culturally, ethnically and linguistically. The bigger the area, the less likely homogeneity will be.

Additionally, the further you are located from the power centre the more likely you are to be subverted by outside powers. Historically this has meant that those living on the periphery of the state are subjected to greater levels of surveillance and greater limitations to freedoms.

Finally, offering India as an example of a benign state/federation shows an enormous ignorance of the religious, cultural, linguistic and even racial differences which exist in the country.

What do you expect her to do? Order the troops to go in and remove Boris. In a constitutional monarchy the Queen does what her PM advises. If she didn’t then the same people would be complaining that she is interfering in politics.

Well, at least Johnson is going to cement his reputation as the Gammon Emperor. He will be idolised by a few mouthbreathing idiots, but history will remember him rather differently.

I'm sure he will never have to buy another drink in Wetherspoons for as long as he lives. Whether he can actually get to the pub without the rest of the country cornering him and doing what he wanted to do to Stuart Collier is another thing though.

I prefer a system with larger constituencies electing, say, 4 MPs each under a PR system, with independents also permitted to stand. Sort of a return to the old system of electing two knights for each shire (tho the organisation would obviously be very different).

Means a constituency can have a variety of representation (i.e. more than one party), without breaking the link between locality and representation. As you say, the Scottish system also achieves this.

This would work well for an elected second chamber.

Wasn't parliament already scheduled to be in recess from 13th September to 9th October for Party conferences. HoC sits four days a week so really what the PM has done isn't of that much consequence.

There was talk of cancelling the recess via a vote which can't be done now so it has rather larger consequences.

Let's not try and normalise what Boris has done.

I disagree with the specific point that a GNU would destroy multi-party democracy for good. They have been formed before in times of crisis (often, but not exclusively, during a major war), but then subsequently broken apart again afterwards. There will always be factions within a GNU who seek to promote their own agenda and other groupings who stand outside it.

On another point, the idea that large regional (e.g. pan-continental) government is a bad thing is based on the questionable premise that small units work best. In reality, the formation of Great Britain ended border wars with the Scots and the existence of the EEC/EU has inhibited military conflict in Western Europe (formerly a very regular occurrance).

Climate change requires global governance innit!!
