I love the fact a physiologist used the term “cognitive dissonance” as I’m sure I’ve made that point a few times before on here and was told I have no idea what the phrase means and I’m just using big words to sound smart :)
A lot of the arguments here though were exactly what I went through before choosing to make the jump full time. There’s always a choice.

Hey, don't waste away, I'd miss your posts on NFL ...*
Don't have an air fryer but will certainly give that recipe a whirl in the oven, cheers.
Coincidentally, stuck some chick peas into a sprouting jar yesterday eve - they're non-organic so may not sprout - if they don't there's now an alternative path for them, thanks again.

Best thing I've found for roast potatoes is to put a teeny amount of bicarbonate of soda into the water when they are boiling.
Leave them as long as you can to boil before they fall apart.
Let them steam off once you've drained them to dry them out. At the same time however much rapeseed oil you'd like in a pan heating in the oven.
When you're ready put the potatoes in.
Last half an hour (if using more oil) put a sprig of rosemary into the oil and maybe some garlic if you like it.

I didn't know people hated vegans, I just thought people just hated being spoken to in a holier than thou way - and if that is a vegan so be it.
A proportion of vegans do it for their own personal reasons and genuinely feel for the cause , some do it because they need attention and some because they are lacking something - no difference really to the reason why "some" people lap up religion

I'd guess if you were to draw a Venn diagram of 'Holier than Thou' and 'Vegan' there would be a large crossover

People said the same about antiwar, civil rights and feminist protesters back in the 60s and 70s. It was also a battle that environmentalists had but now they seem to be accepted into the mainstream.
There's no doubt that certain vegans go too far but I think they've the right to campaign and appear "preachy" as they're more right than wrong.
And the same in reverse for the people who tend to get agitated by what they're saying. A Venn diagram of "Non-vegans" and "Wilfully ignoring the problem" would also see a large crossover.
I say that as someone who isn't as good as I should be when it comes to the solution, but the least I can do is accept the problem and the evidence.

Ok, it wasn't exactly on my bucket list to Ask For a Recipe From J2, but I'll take a massive risk & put my life on the line in light of that photo ... how do you achieve spuds like that?!
Because many tend to be preachy, leftwing, hypocritical bores. A lot of Meat tastes great and we have incisor teeth to eat that meat. I don't believe in factory farming or cruelty to animals but where were the animal rights people when millions of cattle were burnt and destroyed because of the foot and mouth epidemic or when the mad cow hysteria was about? What's wrong with eating dairy products. Being brought up on a farm you get to understand how nature works rather than 'Chris Packham' types who think they know best and know all about nature from the internet or lecture theatres.

You have an unnatural idea about "nature".

Let's face it, it is the only possible way that some middle class white boys can claim to be an oppressed minority, the title to which they greatly aspire.

I was going to pick you up on your earlier use of the term 'populist', the labour leader is a populist, the very definition of populism, strange that you wish to miss this.
Still I thought I would try and move away from insults and labels, I understand that you struggle with this.

Think that's very harsh tbh. By definition, the vegan who doesn't mention their diet, goes largely unnoticed.
The vegans we meat eaters encounter/notice are the vegans who seek to change our opinions, some of whom maybe as you describe.
I maybe should have specified, but the thread is "Why do people hate Vegans so much" so realisitcally is talking about the ones who push it more at you, otherwise you'd be non-plussed as wouldn't know whether they are or aren't.

In reality I expect most peoples experience of vegans is restricted to comments online and those they see in the press or demo’ing in public - rather than people they know in real life. I consider myself to have a fairly wide social circle and come into contact with a lot of people by nature of my job, and can only think of one person I know IRL who is anywhere near vegan - and she is very much a recent convert who is trying to be vegan but not 100% there rather than full on
Of course, there could be others that I’ve met and not realised because they have kept it to themselves
I expect it is similar for most people - hence their general perception of vegans is skewed by the ranty minority as these are effectively the only ones they will have come across
Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

"Believing the cliche of happy farm animals is one such psychological trick meat eaters rely on to justify their habit," Yeah right!
There are a lot of things in the paper which seem to suggest an academic is justifying their argument by a fairly loose assumption of one or another bias.
There is a bias for everyday of the week and two for Sundays. Telling meat eaters that 'every person who eats a squirrel is effectively a cry for help!" doesn't wash.
Sorry but I found the article unconvincing.
Good spot Callis. Happy to learn but on this occasion I do disagree. Meat eaters like us eat meat because we like it. We try and buy as much local produce as we can afford and can find. We are lucky to have two excellent butchers so eat venison shot locally and other game as well.
Sustainability is one of my biggest worries. in The USA you see cattle in mahoosive pens surrounded by dust and fed on processed food. That is wrong. End of.
You can have sustainable meat production but it will cost more as the mass production methods have driven the prices down to stupid levels. I remember the only time we have steak as a kid was when we went to visit the USAF Engineers at RAF Wethersfield. Before mass farming it was at its true price, expensive!
We need to move the lens to sustainable living and away from 'this is the only way'.
Sadly, I fear there are powers bigger than any of us (The USA) who don't give a rat's backside. Alas I fear until they change, we are going to be throwing bricks into the Grand Canyon.
It's interesting that you only choose to believe expert sources when they agree with your own viewpoint and dismiss them when they don't.

Your graps of why people go vegan is the actual opposite of why many people do. It's about not oppressing animals, but if your loony right wing views feel better pretending otherwise then be my guest.
I still can't get over how someone with the Clash's LC cover as their avatar can be so awfully out of touch with anything Punk related, both back in the day and in the present day.

I'd say about 80% of the vegans I know are doing it for the rights of animals. Depends what you class as ranty really. as I said earlier, the number of people who ask you a question then get all bothered when you give them an answer they don't like because it's not been filtered enough in line with their own views is considerable. Good example of this is anyone who says "live and let live" - it shows an awful lack of understanding on the whole issue. We're talking life and death of millions of animals (and a fair few humans if you want to talk about food supplies) every year. It's not a discussion over your favourite position to sleep in or your favourite footballer of all time*
