Why do people hate vegans so much? 10:36 - Feb 9 with 49137 views | monytowbray | Not a literal question, here’s a link. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200203-the-hidden-biases-that-drive-anti-ve I love the fact a physiologist used the term “cognitive dissonance” as I’m sure I’ve made that point a few times before on here and was told I have no idea what the phrase means and I’m just using big words to sound smart :) A lot of the arguments here though were exactly what I went through before choosing to make the jump full time. There’s always a choice.

Why do people hate vegans so much? on 19:43 - Feb 9 by Swansea_Blue | ...on toast, with a dusting of salt and pepper. Mmmm, mmmm. It’s bizarre Calis, it really is. A lot of it comes back to people being suspicious of others who don’t conform or who are different (also see similar question about why people don’t like foreigners - there’s a lot of similar stuff going on there). Everyone knows eating more fruit, veg, pulses, etc., is better for us. So that’s the other strange thing about all this. |
Plus don’t forget I posted it. Took all but five minutes and two posts for the first fantastic BUT IT’S CALLIS meltdown from Ely.

Also - fish caught locally are often shipped in frozen containers to China to be gutted and then they are shipped back [Post edited 9 Feb 2020 20:12]

Wait, you’re telling us animal foods aren’t all locally sourced grub reared organically and delivered to the local butcher on horse and cart? Don’t tell some people here, their agenda and mind would explode :)

People need to just make their choices in life and get on with it.

I would say I’m just stating a fact but callis would only be along to say black was white and then bring it back up about 2 weeks later because I am living rent free in his head and he just can’t get me out of it

Switched long ago, like two years, and even then I think I bought almond milk twice ever when finding a favourite. You’ll find most vegans by nature aren’t just sheeple picking up anything with VEGAN on the package unlike Lowhouse pretends. Often vegans are considerably more environmentally conscious than meat eaters as they’ve already drastically committed to the cause. This is why, unsurprisingly, many vegans aren’t rushing to KFC to buy their new burger. If you think this place is bad and I’m a preachy vegan, you want to see the discussions in exclusive vegan chats. The impact of plant based foods comes up all the time with suggestions on how to improve things. Vegansim is a path and an evolving thing.

Do they though? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a meat eater open dialogue around my veganism, open up with the line “is it for health reasons” then get whingy when I tell them my reasons. Also you’d be amazed when you go vegan how often you have to state you are vegan. Is the cake someone’s brought into work vegan? Please don’t put cow milk in my tea. Can you call the restaurant and ask if they can do a vegan option? You have to request things or ask these things a lot. Not drinking is similar, I’ve recently given up booze again (10 weeks today) because 2019 was a bad year for me and again I have to tell people all the time as most folk are baffled when i ask for a coke or 0% beer on their round.

There is a sixties revivalist band we have known for ten years, young lads now in their early thirties. They often come back to our room , post performance, if they are performing at hotels and we are staying.. we provide drinks , snacks etc. One of them is now vegan and he told us he missed my wife’s. Sausage rolls. She now makes some for him using McCartney sausages and oat milk, instead of the real thing, on the pastry. Always find it odd how vegan dishes, mimic those containing meat.

Why is it odd? Most vegans don't dislike the taste of meat and dairy, they don't eat it for ethical reasons.

Why do people hate vegans so much? on 08:31 - Feb 10 with 5396 views | hampstead_blue | Back to the OP. The reason why people find vegans annoying (I won't use your word of hate as that is too divisive)... there is a branch of vegans who can't stop telling, preaching, shouting at the rest of us. We've a vegan chap in our town who, everytime I see him, has some clothing saying 'vegan' on it. Shut-up man. A close family friend hasn't stopped spouting on about it since he changed a few years back. Everytime you see him he has hat, jacket, t-shirt, all telling us he's a vegan. They are two local observations but it's repeated all over and is boring. Stop preaching to us. It will do nothing for your cause.
| Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Why do people hate vegans so much? on 09:09 - Feb 10 with 5344 views | C_HealyIsAPleasure | Interesting article. Definitely some truth in the cognitive dissonance point, no doubt that it’s easier for people to just switch off from the reality of eating meat/dairy However I think it over-thinks the part around people’s responses to vegans thinking they’re better. Ultimately I think humans just tend to dislike people bragging about how great and much better they are. This is where a vocal minority of vegans tend to get short shrift, and probably don’t really help their cause at all (as the article does note) I would also suggest that it’s only a minority that actually hate vegans, I think most people are happy for people to eat what they want to eat but find the more vocal ones to be tw*ts Good thread

"Believing the cliche of happy farm animals is one such psychological trick meat eaters rely on to justify their habit," Yeah right! There are a lot of things in the paper which seem to suggest an academic is justifying their argument by a fairly loose assumption of one or another bias. There is a bias for everyday of the week and two for Sundays. Telling meat eaters that 'every person who eats a squirrel is effectively a cry for help!" doesn't wash. Sorry but I found the article unconvincing. Good spot Callis. Happy to learn but on this occasion I do disagree. Meat eaters like us eat meat because we like it. We try and buy as much local produce as we can afford and can find. We are lucky to have two excellent butchers so eat venison shot locally and other game as well. Sustainability is one of my biggest worries. in The USA you see cattle in mahoosive pens surrounded by dust and fed on processed food. That is wrong. End of. You can have sustainable meat production but it will cost more as the mass production methods have driven the prices down to stupid levels. I remember the only time we have steak as a kid was when we went to visit the USAF Engineers at RAF Wethersfield. Before mass farming it was at its true price, expensive! We need to move the lens to sustainable living and away from 'this is the only way'. Sadly, I fear there are powers bigger than any of us (The USA) who don't give a rat's backside. Alas I fear until they change, we are going to be throwing bricks into the Grand Canyon.

Yep, it often comes across as self-righteous and pious. I think the thing for me is that nothing is ever enough, there is always someone who is 'better vegan'. Now a vegan diet is becoming more popular the 'better vegans' want to now describe those people as merely on a 'plant based diet' as opposed to Vegans.....you'll never be good enough whatever you do

I didn't know people hated vegans, I just thought people just hated being spoken to in a holier than thou way - and if that is a vegan so be it. A proportion of vegans do it for their own personal reasons and genuinely feel for the cause , some do it because they need attention and some because they are lacking something - no difference really to the reason why "some" people lap up religion [Post edited 10 Feb 2020 9:51]

That was from google images. My 'recipe' is just boiling some potatoes and throwing them into the air fryer with no oil. As a master chef though, if you're happy to use a little oil I would boil them, stick them in a glass bowl, throw on some olive oil and rosemary, give them a good mix by hand and stick them in the oven until crispy. I might do some oil free air fried chickpeas, make a little paste out of some spices and a dash of water, give them a good coating and stick them back in for a minute or two. I made two ingredient cookies the other day. Just 2 mashed bananas and some oats. They weren't bad! For someone who used to crave junk food constantly I can say my cravings are non-existent since basing my diet on starch like Dr McDougall suggests. I'm nowhere near as strict as his plan requires but I took the good bits of his plan and modified it and I feel great. Just need a new belt to stop my jeans falling down

All the reports that I can find, suggest the best way to be sustainable, is to move to a plant based diet. E.g. UK could be food secure on a plant based diet. If your target is sustainable food for entire world population, then plant based diet is the one to go for. And interesting line of discussion that sometimes happens is that someone will mention population growth, and restricting that. Which sort of means that humans are restricting other humans rights on reproduction, based on a preference. Well I have a busy week, so that’s me done.

Hey, don't waste away, I'd miss your posts on NFL ...* Don't have an air fryer but will certainly give that recipe a whirl in the oven, cheers. Coincidentally, stuck some chick peas into a sprouting jar yesterday eve - they're non-organic so may not sprout - if they don't there's now an alternative path for them, thanks again. *

reports I've seen say that a sustainable diet is one which is very low in animal products - but not necessarily zero. so veganism isn't the only sustainable diet - veganism itself is a varied thing depending on where the food comes from and how it is produced. as in everything the distinction between very low animal product v. vegan isn't simple or black and white. one of the most sustainable things you can eat, for example, is rabbit. but it's not terribly vegan.
