I love the fact a physiologist used the term “cognitive dissonance” as I’m sure I’ve made that point a few times before on here and was told I have no idea what the phrase means and I’m just using big words to sound smart :)

I once did voluntary work on a 14 acre organic smallholding (WWOOF - working weekends on organic farms, anyone remember that?). The owner & his wife had 8 kids. He also constantly banged on verbally about how self-sustainability was the only way forward. Never did quite muster the guts to ask him how that could work if every family had 8 kids all wanting their own 14 acre plot ... |  |

If you’re out with your mates, at a restaurant, and some of them eat meat, how do you approach that particular subject?
Some of your vegan threads have seemed a bit, not aggressive, but forthright.
Do you bring it up every time or just the once and let them come to their own decision in due course?
If I had a mate that was a hardcore vegan that I went for dinner with, I would just find a vegan restaurant to eat at with them. |

I chose to go veggy and wouldn't dream of inflicting my eating views on others, it's my ongoing choice. I'll always find something on the menu that I can eat. We had a night out at Rio's Brazilian BBQ house in town last weekend and I did alright with the salad and bread options.
I did find it amusing that I posted on here a little while ago that I enjoyed the meatless meatball options at Subway.

One thing that it occurs to me the article doesn’t touch on is what I could call the ‘football fan in the 1980s’ effect:
A small number of sanctimonious bellends giving Veganism a bad name. Your average vegan probably is tarred with a brush (in the way all football fans were seen as hooligans), which is unfortunate and unhelpful given the wider debate that needs to be had. | | | |

Agreed, it's part of the same conversation.
I don't think it's been socially acceptable to have lots of children and put the responsibility on society for many years. But that's also increasingly becoming an environmental issue too.
If people bang on about it as purely a personal choice and not open for a wider discussion then I don't think they accept the wider impact of their choices. |  |

I think it's more a question of a simpler psychology - most people don't like being told what to do. As all parents know, telling kids *not* to do something would more likely achieve their desired end!
As adults, having something repeatedly pushed at you can actually have the opposite effect of what was wanted - in the end it effectively amounts to a kind of aversion therapy - you're so annoyed at the repetitiveness of the message that you go & do the opposite of what the messenger wanted.
