Oh he's a cretin alright, but he can't be THAT stupid.

He doesn't listen to anything, or read anything - not anything of note I mean.
Story today in the NYT which says his daily activity is to sit and watch TV all morning, come into the WhiteHouse at lunch, not prepare for his briefing, stand up and do it, go home watch himself back on TV, have dinner, watch more TV then go to bed.

He's not interested in doing the job properly
Astonishing really, that somebody can hold a position of such vital importance, treat it with utter contempt, and get away with it.

What game is he playing? Nobody is that stupid and certainly not a billionaire businessman who became US president. I honestly believe he plays the clown on purpose a lot of the time, and what I really want to know is why?
It's worth a reminder about how he became (according to him) a billionaire businessmen.
He was set up in business by his father, bailed out when he failed, then inherited the company - including the managers and other staff who actually do the work. Even then, he has managed to lose money and I am pretty certain that all his properties are heavily loaded with debt, because he works by "making deals" (i.e. borrowing money from people) to build them.
He's probably a pretty good salesman with a great deal of chutzpah. Maybe a fair degree of cunning, too. But that's not the same as intelligence.
Moreover, unlike Johnson's aimiable buffoonery, which is meant to disarm, Trump's "act" (if it is such) carries no humour, is too relentless and does not seem to be masking any kind of sharper wit. It may appeal to a sector of the conspiracy-theory believing, Alex Jones listening public, but they are not really a very large proportion of US society. Certainly not enough, in cold calculations, to get him re-elected if many others are put off (which, anecdotally, I have seen evidence of).
If there is any "plan", it seems to be filling rally halls with a few thousand enthusiastic headbangers so he can soak up the adulation.
There’s all these clever scientists working night and day around the world trying to find a vaccine, adapting existing ones, genetically modifying genes etc etc and they’re all wasting their time. Fake news. Just wallop down a pint of domestos and that’s C-19 sorted!
Technically, he is right. It’s a guaranteed solution, you will never get the virus...or any other virus ever again. Thanks Donald. You really are the worlds saviour, so show us mere mortals the way and down a pint of it to the old Zulu warriors chant on national television. I’d pay to watch it.

Indeed. But that is partly the product of a system where someone with no prior political experience whatsoever can just rock up, get themselves selected as a candidate for one of the two main parties (of which they needn't even have been a member very long), then leverage that to get the role of running the country on a nearly 50/50 chance.
Unlike most other democracies, where they had to have come throught the ranks, at least to some extent. Or wouldn't be acceptable as a candidate without. Even Macron had cabinet experience before running for President.

I did a bit of a roadtrip 2 years ago along parts of route 66. Was a real eye opener to me how disenfranchised / abandoned large parts of America are. Similar to what Ed Balls did on his show which was very insightful and well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
Yeah, Trump is an a1 c*nt. But the system has sh1t on poor people for decades in America and many people simply thought 'Why not? Can't be any worse can it?'
I took the train from Rhode Island into NYC and it was saddening to see endless derelict factories (which were beautiful buildings in their own right) along virtually the entire route. This is in an area that is still fairly well off so I can fully understand what you are saying about people thinking it couldn't be any worse.

I just don't get the reaction of voting for a more extreme version of what has led to them being disenfranchised and abandoned though. That's essentially what has happened in the US and here too. Trump isn't offering anything that will help the least well off, far from it.
However, he has been portrayed as a revolutionary, the man to crush the evil Washington DC elites and return power to the ordinary bloke in his pickup.
The fact there is no real evidence for this from his or his party's history is irrelevant. People see what they want to see and in the face of a choice between definitely more of the same and probably more of the same (but claims of radical change), they plumped for the latter. But only narrowly, by a quirk of the electoral system.

I did similar, from Denver up in a big loop up along the western edge of the plains, then through the Rockies and Sierra Nevada to San Francisco. What stuck me was how far apart everything is. Not surprising that most people have a very localist view and international affairs are almost background noise.

I know they are extremes but when you see programmes like Making a Murderer or Tiger King, you just see the sheer vastness of nothing, and the conditions people live in.
They have sites which are 100s of acres but live in caravans and trailers on them, and the next town is 100s of miles away.
Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Basically, he’s bonkers.

Maybe he could do a Gummer and demonstrate for the cameras how safe it is?

I think you need to look deeper at this and Do Your Research. I'm sure that in your experience it's not as bad as the people who suggested it's mind-boggling stupid suggest. I have a book on Amazon written by a sociologist who says it's a REALLY sensible idea...
I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I think he is possibly the only man in history to have run a casino that lost money.
And that he'd have been richer than he is by simply putting his inheritance in the Skipton Building Society everyday savings account.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit America a good number of times, but in real terms, given it’s size, only seen a little of it. It’s a truly wonderful country and the people are great. I could live there easily. But you need money. It’s no place to be if you don’t have it. I saw a bit of Trump on the tv out there during the Primaries. He was good with the media and completely dominated it. His message was simple, he was new, different and to people with nothing, why would they not vote for him? He gave people hope, however much of a lie it was.
I enjoyed Ed Balls’ programme. He was interested without being patronising and people opened up to him. Despite the Norwich connection, he’s a likeable guy. Much better than Stephen Fry’s effort when he was roaming around in a taxi. He was lucky not to get thumped.
