Gary Neville gave a really overly simple example yesterday.

Man Utd have 150 million global fans. If they got just a £1 for each game, that is £150m every Super League game. Even cut it in half that's £75m.

They get about £5m a game in the PL. They want to control their own broadcast rights.

You can see why their owners want it, but it is still the wrong thing for football

I'm not advocating it. I think football sold it's soul decades ago.

I find it a bit bewildering that so many fans are surprised, as it's a natural extension of where football has been heading for a long time.

I genuinely think we will have clubs putting on matches in multiple cities in the years ahead. 9 matches in Manchester and 1 each in Dubai, Shanghai, Sydney etc.

Look at how F1 or MotoGP tour the world and make 2/3 days of a visit. That could be the future, albeit not for a few more years yet.

Football stopped being about community and became about money a long long ago. The only solution I see is the German fan ownership model but even that guarantees nothing, given Barca and Madrid are both collectives too.

Yep. I'm not sure how they thought they could carry on in the PL and cherry pick how they engaged with domestic football. Very naive.

This type of thing happens all the time.

People think they are so important they can do whatever they want and are then surprised when other people say no.

29 years of the PL and however many years of the Champions League have made people numb to the fact that football died from greed years ago.

And Sky pundits whining like babies - about money in football.
And a Champions League where you don't need to be a Champion to win it.

I couldn't care less if the ESL happens.

I really don't want it to happen, but you're bang on here.

The hypocrisy from the football establishment on this subject has been laughable in places. And they're saying it's because they care about the fans? B*llocks. If they were involved in the super league they'd be all over it - they're just worried about getting cut out.

Even our new owners are at it - "Oh this new league is based on greed." And why have you bought us? For the love of the game? Come on. We let the market decide the fate of our game about two decades ago.

I am a bit surprised by the strength of the reaction tbh. As you say, we've been living through a money-driven period of the game since at least Sky came on the scene, and then the Champions League, etc. This is entirely the same principle even if the riches may be more.

Judging by your avatar you're trying to convince yourself there.

Trying to convince myself of what ?

I'm all in with our US takeover.
I'm not fussed with the ESL.
What's the contradiction ?

It's the folks who buy Sky for the PL and are currently having a hissy fit about the ESL who need a slap.

Saw a couple of polls that suggested around 10-15% of respondents in favour. Amazed me as I've not heard one positive comment.

The worry here is that the threats / sanctions could see them walk and set up a full time ESL - 20 clubs similar to the EPL. Throw in them having overseas matches like the NFL do - they could even move say Man U to Thailand or wherever.

The proportion of their income coming from match day attendances is at it's lowest. And if they buggger off to Asia why would that even drop. And it is the Asian markets that could generate huge revenues that could dwarf the current UK income.

These owners know this and people like the Glaziers have only 1 agenda, to make as much money as they can. There is nil emotional tie to the clubs.

That is not a worry at all. English football would be better off without Manchester United International of Dublin. The only losers would be the 'legacy fans' of the clubs that leave.....and that is a price worth paying for the rest of us.

As others have said, the only clubs that *really* need this are Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid who are totally shot financially. The others are just tagging along because of FOMO.

Wouldn't be surprised if one were Liverpool. Not seen it mentioned on here but aparently Klopp is very unhappy about the ESL and wanted talks immediately on the issue.

It could have been done so much better, with much wider support, but clubs wanted a guaranteed place so a non-starter.

As Neville said last night, City don’t need the money so they would be one of the first to pull the plug.

NONE of them need the money.

Agree... they knew it would be negative but I don't think they thought it would be this bad esp among their 8wn fans.

Ban any player who plays from all internationals and all other domestic competitions for life.

Same for managers.

Relegate all teams involved to the lowest tier of non league football in their respective county.

Introduce an ESL revenue tax for all clubs involved at 75% of all revenue involved.

Expunge all previous titles, cups etc.

Thats just of the top of my head.

Seen Perez trying to sell it today, the man is deluded. Love to see some banks call in some loans after this.

You need to cut the employees of these clubs some slack. They’ve not been anything to do with this, some will be on contracts to 24, 25, 26. Not that easy for them to extricate themselves from their environment.

This needs to focus on fcking up the owners as much as possible, and really damaging the share value of these clubs.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

Furthermore its becoming clearer and clearer that this is one big rushed feck up that is quickly turning into an epic bottle job.

Pushed through hours before the new CL format announcement, by Perez on behalf of Real (currently £100m in the red, they NEED this).

Picked up United and Liverpool because they have american arch capitalist owners and this is what they want anyway by default. Took the others along for the ride by FOMO.

Reports that 'what normally takes years took hours over the weekend.'

Announced without even a full compliment of europe's 'big teams' on board.

Dreadful website. No actual 'elite' product secured.

'"16-24 years olds dont watch football!" Thats not a business model. No proof of concept.

Cracks at the first signs of fan pushback.

Garbage idea poorly executed. Only question now is how the institutions sancion them as they come crawling back.

It's a bit late for moral fortitude now isn't it? Football opened the doors years ago to allow in the sort of money and power that is pretty much ungovernable. Individuals that have clout and power that goes well beyond football right across the world, let alone the power they have as a collective.

Re your last point there is only 1 way.

These teams need to be shown and made an example of in so much as “you cannot ride roughshod over us as a Football Association “ and be made to reapply for their place in the English football pyramid, the PL rules as I have seen them state the competitions they are allowed to take part in as part of the PL, that seems to robustly tell these clubs that this is not acceptable

I think and believe it is City and Chelsea, both owned by oligarchs (don't need the money) and the others are US owned (all put huge debts on the clubs)

He’s right though……. Wouldn’t it be ironic if half of the big stars of these teams refused to be part of it or that the worlds biggest players all jumped ship?

It wouldn’t be the flagship competition that the owners are wanting without these players who arguably could go to any other club in Europe

I've never understood how people can form links with teams if they (presumably) don't watch their games. How can build the shared experience and memories? I'm assuming here of course that he didn't travel every other week to Liverpool when he was growing up in Lincs. Maybe he did though.

So hard to see how they can play in the ESL at all with rule L9 of the PL:

Except with the prior written approval of the board, during the season a club shall not enter or play its senior men’s first team in any competition other than:

L.9.1 - The UEFA Champions League
L.9.2 - The UEFA Europa League
L.9.3 - The FA Cup
L.9.4 - The FA Community Shield
L.9.5 - The Football League Cup or
L.9.6 - Competitions sanctioned by the County Association of which it is a member.

I am sure they have the lawyers on it but that looks pretty specific with what competitions are allowed.
