Decent promotion for Ian Craney.... 14:12 - May 14 with 17848 viewsBloots

...washing the pants for Wigan one week and coaching the first team at Ipswich the next.

Scouse mafia.

I'm trying to not be negative about stuff that's going on.

Only Ipswich Town would employ a fookin kit man to train professional footballers.

Imagine rocking up to training and your choice of coach is either a pissed up wife beater or a bloke who has openly admitted he would rather wash sh&tty pants than coach.

What happened to getting the right people into the right roles?

Why is it odd? He is a former player with coaching qualifications who Cook has worked with. And it's not exactly a senior role. Gary Roberts has probably done the same amount of coaching. So what if he has been working as a kitman? It's not as if we have just employed the shopping trolley lad from Co-Op as our CEO.

....but he was a bread delivery driver a couple of years ago.

So quite close.

My concern as it moves on is has PC ran out of contacts for specific roles.

Jeffers for example, was a recommendation not someone he knew

All the people PC had and had alreaedy given jobs to in the past are at higher clubs.

Whilst I'd like to be positive, the coaching appointments so far don't fill me with confidence;

Roberts.. Never coached before.

Craney... Never coached before.

Jeffers... limited coaching experience, none with first team. Replaces the experiences and highly rated Gill.

Although I'm chuffed Dyer has now been promoted, he also doesn't have a great deal of experience.

At this rate you just need to be walking past Portman Road at the right time to get a coaching role.

To be fair, I was approached as I walked down there earlier.

I had my Dennis the Menace and Gnasher badges (worn in the correct way), which seemed to impress.

I start next Thursday.

Funny that with Ashton bringing in these mega qualified people on one side, and seeimngly the opposite on the coaching side.

Feels like there is going to be a Real Football Men vs Number Cruncher type battle, or Jocks v Nerds

My other concern is didn’t someone (Portsmouth or Wigan fan) say Cook didn’t do much coaching himself and very much left it in the hands of the coaching team? So basically we’ll have an Under 23 coach, a kit man and someone with no coaching experience whatsoever leading the drills.

It comes to something when it seems to have been a better set up under Evans/Lambert.

Yeah, it was quite simple

4 2 3 1, 6 weeks in pre season of how he wants it to work

after that, coaches take the training to ensure the players are match ready.

The new head of sports science, managed to get the job role of head of sports science after just 4 weeks in employment

Barron, not confirmed yet........... head of recruitment....... not been involved in recruitment

Ashton, Werhum, Rolls, etc all are meag experienced in the game with great CVs

Barron has worked on the other side of recruitment for a long time - the sports science guy got promoted quickly but hes been doing that role for a couple of years now across 2 clubs

Compared to coaches with no badges, or seemingly no previous desire shown to even be coaches in Roberts and Craney

Ah ok. In a way I can see a sort of logic with the hiring - take green coaches who have not had another set up drilled into them (well, Jeffers has to an extent, I suppose) and mould them to his will, rather than bringing in an experienced coach who may have different ideas.

No idea if it will work out or not!

Lot of concern from some on here, but the truth of the matter is he needs to build his back room staff, and he is ultimately he is going to rightfully go for people he knows and trusts, knows personalities, has relationships with.

Nobody on here knows whether Roberts, Jeffers and Craney are good coaches, but I trust Cook to build who he wants in place.

I think many are jumping to conclusions a bit here.

The bigger Championship clubs have 5-6 full-time coaches. For many years, our club has only had 2, 3 at most. I think it's a mindset thing getting to grips with the fact that we'll have more coaches to oversee individual aspects of the team going forward.

Craney's quotes were 2 years ago - he may have changed his mind in that time or his initial quotes may have just been respectful to his employers at the time.

We can't micro-analyse every single change at the club this summer. We need to think macro and wait and see how all of these changes affect on-pitch performances.

I've been trying to find out what experiences his previous staff had before Wigan, but can't remember half their names!

But you are right, moulding it to his way would make sense, so not only players but all staff are alligned to is wishes. less chance of back stabbing, talking behind backs or i'd have done this instead of that etc.

I hope you're going to give Cook and his staff a decent amount of time. You're one of the posters on here whose opinion carries weight and if you turn early there's going to be a lot of others who are desperately waiting for the first acceptable moment turn as well.

We're just going to have to trust Cook and his judgement.

That is 4 now for first team, and you have to assume a GK will join them.

I wonder if there will even be an assistant manager now or goes with what he has.

I can't say I'm particularly thrilled with the Jeffers appointment for the stuff away from football, but he has volunteered to get into coaching, and held down a job at a decent setup since then - I've concerns he hasn't had much senior experience, but ultimately he has had 5 years 'on the grass' which is massive.

Neither Roberts, nor Craney, have shown any appetite to coach, neither have done their badges, neither have put in the time on the grass required to push themselves on.

Coaching isn't all about badges, but Mick Mills was making good points on Suffolk post Fleetwood game that you need a good coach who can set up his own sessions, who can keep the players engaged, who can keep things ticking over whilst the manager oversees......and that isn't easy.

I'm sure plenty on here have coached kids teams, even at that level it's tough when you have to get sessions set up, make sure everyone is active, make sure people aren't getting bored - times that by 100 for first team footballers.....you hear them talk about coaches on things like Undr The Cosh etc, if a coach isn't up to it they get found out in about 30 seconds and won't gain that respect back

I don't think he gets that

He asked ast night why people assume he's close to the scene

and in the other thread about player meetings pretty much tells people how he's close to the scene and was told.....

I genuinelly took Joe to be someone extremely close to the first team squad, So someone I would look upto in a way for his insight, not quite sure what is and isn;'t true anymore though
