Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? 13:50 - Jun 18 with 1611 views | Mediocre_Quick | Interesting discussion at work, with BBC discussing the David Marshall lob Is GK the hardest position to play on the pitch? Or is it elsewhere?
Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 13:51 - Jun 18 with 1593 views | ipswich78 | Not sure about hardest, but it's the most stand out position that if you make a mistake, there's a much higher chance you'll end up conceding a goal. Think about how many times a player misses a penalty or a one on one with a keeper. Then look at how many times that's discussed vs a goalkeeper making an error which ends up with them conceding a goal.

Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 13:52 - Jun 18 with 1587 views | hype313 | Well if a keeper makes a mistake then it invariably leads to a goal which puts them in the spotlight, they are also expected to play as a sweeper these days too, so they must have far better ball control (Which is why Hart was shipped out of City so quickly), especially as so many teams play 3 at the back.

Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 13:53 - Jun 18 with 1574 views | waveneyblue | I think its the position with the most pressure. One mistake can lose a match, a striker could miss 4 easy chances, score one and be the hero. I wouldn't fancy it, but as I am 5ft plus not much, not an issue I had to worry about .... (Although I think its the best position in a penalty shoot out)
Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 13:54 - Jun 18 with 1570 views | Cheltenham_Blue | As someone that played GK at county youth Level, its definitely easier to see when you get it wrong more than 'being harder', and mistakes always lead to a goal. Mistakes higher up the pitch can be recovered. You've got to be a bit mad, although GK's are better protected now than when I played in the 90's, The list of injuries I sustained is quite the list, from going in when boots were flying, starting off with a shattered jaw.

Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 13:58 - Jun 18 with 1550 views | itfctilidie | I think it is. In any other position you could make a couple of misplaced passes, or not pick up a runner once or twice but still end up having a good game. In goal one lapse in concentration could potentially cost your team the game. You could make 3 or 4 great saves but the one clanger is what will get spoke about

In my prime I was an awful fullback lacking any footballing sense at all. However, it always baffled me that a goalkeeping or defensive error would be criticised by our strikers as why we lost. But, if they missed an easy chance then that never contributed to defeat. Goals simply take so much pressure off the defence. Saying that, a striker is expected to help out and track back whereas a central defender is never really expected to contribute in the attacking half to that extent. Goalkeeping is the most specialist positing - think all other positions are just as hard as each other that require a different skills set.

It’s the most glamorous position - no doubt about that. But hardest, don’t think so.
Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 14:11 - Jun 18 with 1487 views | Churchman | No, it’s not the hardest, but I would argue it is the most important after, possibly, centre forward/goal scorer. No team does anything without a decent goalkeeper. I hope we sign somebody a lot better than what we’ve got.
Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 14:11 - Jun 18 with 1485 views | chrismakin | For me it is, mainly because being a GK is no longer just about saving shots. To be the best, you've now go to be able to save shots, come off your line, command your area, understand when to leave your area, play sweeper, use both feet, be able to quickly place a short pass, accurate long ball distribution, throwing accuracy, short and long etc etc

Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 14:19 - Jun 18 with 1466 views | Keaneish | It’s the most unforgiving, not the toughest. Centre mid is easily the most demanding because you need to be able to do everything every other outfield position commands.

It was all of that in the 90's too.

I made this point and got laughed out the room, despite playing CM or Holding mid for the last couple of years, funnily enough this argument started with a GK

Not to the level it seems to be now, the new goal kick rule allowing defenders into the area has automatically brought the game closer to the keepers, the likes of City, Liverpool, chelsea etc playing from the back and putting the keeper under pressure on so many occasions. Definately not something I saw much in the 90's

Interesting. I played to semi decent standard and playing up front killed me! Constantly either running around closing down defenders or making attacking runs (most of which never end with the ball heading in your direction!)

Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 15:04 - Jun 18 with 1372 views | Chrisd | I would say mentally it is, yes. The fact you’re that last line of defence the onus is on you, you need that confidence and self belief going into every game. Invariably, on the pitch you’ve got a team mate behind you to dig you out of trouble if you make a bad pass or mistimed challenge. Also, if you make a mistake as a GK if often leads to a goal, you need the mental aptitude to be able to overcome that, especially if that happens early in the game - it can cause you mental turmoil as you think about what you should’ve done. In addition, you need to be concentrating for the whole time and that’s really tough if you haven’t had much to do in a game. I suppose in summary, the good keepers are those that make the game simple, communicate well, are good decision makers and make the fewest mistakes and that’s not easy, which makes the position very challenging in my view. Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 15:05 - Jun 18 with 1370 views | RobTheMonk | Each position is equally difficult in my opinion. Have a rubbish goalie but good strikers and then your defence isn't being marshalled properly so you may conceed more. Poor midfield and you get played through. Poor strikers and you don't get enough goals. Fullbacks rubbish? There goes your attacking threat and defensive threat.
Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 15:24 - Jun 18 with 1328 views | LeBlue | GK is probably the position that is the most exposed in terms of mistakes being evident. Central mid is the most demanding. Central Defender is, without question, the easiest - assuming you have an ability to read the game. My central defender partner and I in the team we used to play for would know who had had the best game depending on how clean our kit was afterwards. If you could stay on your feet the whole game, you'd had a good one. Last minute sliding tackles were evidence of misreading a situation.

Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 15:36 - Jun 18 with 1294 views | Vic | I played in goal for a couple of seasons at local league football. It’s a horrible position! I still remember one goal going in and one of my ‘team mates’ looking at me and saying ‘B .... H ...., my 5 year old could do better than that!’ Another time I was playing in for a team where just about every other player was better than me and we were in what was for us a serious cup tie and I let a hig(, hopeful punt go through my hands just under the bar! It was a regulation catch and I had so much time and I just cocked it right up. Talk about wanting to creep under a rock! Is it the hardest? Not really, is it the one with the most pressure and where every mistake counts? Definitely! BTW, I completely lost confidence after the last incident and was dropped for a while. I got my place back and saved several pens as the season went on. The feeling of bailing your team out is just about as high as it gets!

Is Goalkeeper the hardest position to play on the pitch? on 16:24 - Jun 18 with 1223 views | ITFC_Forever | It is when you have Something_Blue as your left-back pinging OGs into the top corner..... I played GK at national uni level then local Sunday league - had several offers to play at a decent Saturday level, but always said no as I spent Saturdays watching ITFC. As others have said, there's no hiding place when it goes wrong.....
