God, it’s hard work watching us 18:54 - Jun 29 with 6215 views | Chrisd | Germany were dog sh*t and we were a little better. We’re going to be that Greek side from 2004 that won the Euros, it’s not going to be pretty but we keep grinding out the results. [Post edited 29 Jun 2021 18:55]

God, it’s hard work watching us on 20:05 - Jun 29 by Chrisd | You’re right - a win, is a win. However, this isn’t a top German side no matter how people try to convince themselves because we have beaten them in the knockout stages of a major tournament for first time for god knows how long?! Many of the comments are based on their footballing pedigree and their achievements in the past not what they are like now as a side. [Post edited 29 Jun 2021 20:19]

God, it’s hard work watching us on 19:53 - Jun 29 by NthQldITFC | We controlled the pace of the game pretty much throughout. McGuire was immense and could perhaps have had a couple of goals in the first half. Rice, Phillips and Stones also made up a really strong base, and although we didn't unlock the German defence regularly, Sterling and Saka did cause them a lot of problems. That was a much better performance than many people are giving the team credit for. |
I didn't say it was a bad performance, certainly not overall. That gave me a lot of encouragement, being able to keep the Germans so quiet, only really a couple of decent chances. If we can do that to the Italians, I could see them imploding. The defence is solid, the attacking side somewhat patchy, but we can turn on the class when we need to. Sterling is proving immense. Kane came alive as the game neared its end (perhaps he was getting more space and less individual attention as the Germans tired). We don't need to be flashy, we need to win. And, at 2 - 0, that was emphatic.

For the record, I fail to see a negative with the pre season transfer activity at ITFC. Could be wrong of course.

I know. I think my comments would have been better attached to a different post! I think we looked a fair bit fitter and faster than to the ball all over the pitch, except Kane of course, but that's not his game. Composure all over the pitch as well - can you imagine Tony Adams and Steve Bould knocking it around with Seaman at the back like that!?

If you can't enjoy a knockout game in a major tournament against Germany with the biggest crowd in the UK since covid started then maybe international football isn't for you.

I am enjoying the fact we won. However I don't get all the hype about the performance. We looked very average against a very average German team.

Oh of course the result itself etc fun galore. Plenty of celebration etc. But that's not to say the games themselves havent been rather drab affairs. It's a winning formula so it doesnt matter but the 'fun' part for the majority isnt there. No real different to the mick times here really you enjoyed it when we won but rarely had fun whilst watching it.

They aren’t even the equals of the Germany side of 1998, although they might be a bit better than the one that lost to England in Euro 2000, I’ll give you that.

The time period of our supposed 'Golden Generation' though. This England side is doing all right and so is their manager. Even if we don't progress any further in this tournament I can honestly see Southgate growing more and more into the role if he is allowed to. He seems to have his head screwed on despite the criticism from some quarters. I don't understand why some people seem to want him [and them] to fail.

This German team that you call average includes the likes of Neuer, Hummels, Ginter, Kimmich, Kroos, Sane and Muller. Remember the German 2002 world cup squad, they were extremely average but guess what they still made the final. Even if this were an average German team(it isnt) any victory against the Germans in a WC or EC is an achievement. Yes we didn't thrash them 5-1 like we did in Munich or outplay them like we did the Dutch in Euro 96 but those kind performances are extremely rare. One of the reasons why Germany didn't play that well is because England didn't let them. If you are expecting England to outplay even an 'average ' German team in the knockout stages of a EC with all the associated pressure then I suggest your expectations are far too high. It's weird isn't it? Before the game many of us were nervous and no-one would've been surprised if we'd lost. After the game, however, people have to find excuses for why we won rather than just accept we did a great job.

I agree with everything you’ve said Jeera. I certainly don’t want to see us fail and take no enjoyment in it either, but I’m also mindful of who we were playing today. We weren’t brilliant, we were a little better than them and got the win, but that’s how we’ve played throughout this tournament. If it was against that German side of 2014 I’d be delighted, but it wasn’t it is a German side that is lacking it’s usual efficiency and arrogance and I appreciate some don’t want to agree. I was listening to a German sports journalist earlier today and they said they were in desperate need of a change of direction with the manager and he also stated they aren’t the force they once were. There’s no doubt that we’ve got a great opportunity to make the final and win the whole thing, but I still stand by what I originally posted we could potentially win this by grinding it out and do it in a manner similar to that of Greece in 2004.
