However, this isn’t a top German side no matter how people try to convince themselves because we have beaten them in the knockout stages of a major tournament for first time for god knows how long?! I watched them wallop Portugal the other Saturday so they are not too bad. England are a decent side who but a team of similar ability, good win.

This is the point. I am bit young to remember 1966 and this is the best knockout result I can recall from England. No Argentina heroic failure, no penalties and tears. Just a simple 2-0 win….against Germany. Yes, Germany. Group games, friendlies yes, when it matters never - until yesterday. It didn’t matter how it came. They had chances, we had chances, we won. I loved it. The negatives can be saved for another day.. Looking at England’s bench though, there are some top players potentially coming through. The future looks bright.

I think England aren't getting the credit they deserve, because they aren't going out with the intention of trying to rip other teams apart. It is very much defence first. But who out there will look at England and want to play England? You don't want to play a team in the QF that hasn't even conceded.

That sounds about right to me. It was a very cautious, cagey affair for much of last night. But more importantly it was a very controlled, patient and professional performance even if it didn't entertain like the previous night's matches did. You can only beat who's in front of you and getting this far without conceding is pretty impressive.

They beat Portugal in the group, drew with an excellent Spain side, knocked France out in the 1/4s, Czech Rep in the Semi and beat Portugal again in the final. For the group that had to achieve that was a phenomenal achievement. As for England, if anyone thinks we have a right to walk a game against Germany I don't know what planet they're on. It was always going to be tight and always going to be one that could go either way. It's perhaps not peak Germany but they've still got a lot of quality. How about people just back the team for once, back the manager and maybe trust that he knows what he's doing?

The other thing, and I don't know if this is in my mind or reality, is I believe at other tournaments England have been very reliant on a few stand out players and their own individual talent. Rather than having a strong system with a squad that by-and-large wouldn't see massive drops in performance, if the individual players were replaced. Mings has did well at the back. Foden, Sancho, Mount and Grealish are great attacking options on the bench. Even if we lost Kane, Calvet-Lewin knows where the back of the net is and can hold the ball up well in that position. Players like Saka, Grealish and Maguire have all come in after not starting the tournament and played really well. [Post edited 30 Jun 2021 11:47]

God, it’s hard work watching us on 11:48 - Jun 30 with 679 views | BarcaBlue | Is this negativity a Suffolk thing? I mean in the comments when a new signing is unveiled you invariably get the "he'll be on the treatment table next week" type comments, or the "underwhelming signing" jibes without seeing him play (or ever seeing them). Just seems like some like to revel in it. A miserable outlook on everything footy related can't be healthy.

Not sure if it's a Suffolk thing or just an individual thing, but personally I think I'm pre disposed to expect the worst with football. Maybe its a defence mechanism having supported Ipswich my whole life which has largely (of late at least) been sh1t. I have a mate from Essex, big West Ham fan and he's the total opposite, almost blindly optimistic. If they were 2-0 down after a 1st leg he's still entirely confident they can and will do it, it's quite refreshing really. [Post edited 30 Jun 2021 12:14]

Whilst I think you're part right, about Germany not being as good as they have done say 5/10 years ago, of course you have to use it to put a negative spin on the win. Were you also saying Colombia weren't a good side in 2018 as soon as we beat them? I thought the media were bad but it turns out there's actually a lot of English people who will always have something to moan about.

There were some really interesting comments about how spot-on Southgate's tourney management has been so far, from the pundits on Dotun Adebayo's World Football phone-in last night on 'Up All Night' on R5l - can't recall all the details of what was said as it was around 1.30 a.m. and I was half-asleep zzzzzz, but it's all here https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09mxp20 I think it was Tim Vickery who also said he thought Southgate's biggest problem is right now, as he'd have expected & been preparing for the "bigger" teams like France, probably basing our set-up on defence first - but will now need to switch to something which is more pro-active and attack-minded, which he won't find easy.

I think he'd find that easier by starting Grealish or Foden, who are both more attack minded.

I think he meant "easy" in the psychological sense, ie being cautious is more natural to Southgate.

That’s great writing that list and outlining their achievements from the past, but how many of those are in their prime? There’s a few in there that seem to be going down the wrong side the hill now. I look at someone like Neuer - especially playing in a position I did - he looks a shadow of the keeper he once was. He seems more interested in being an outfield player and pushing those boundaries than actually doing his job in keeping ball out of the net. I watch him now, although he’s not short of confidence, he’s become more a liability than being one of the best keepers in the world, which he probably was 5 years ago, he’s not now in my opinion. The way Pickford has played for England during these 4 games I’d prefer him, than Neuer. Appreciate that’s just one example.

This German side (ranked 12th in the world) ripped apart Portugal (Ranked 5th in the world). Yes, they aren't the best team in the world (by rankings that is Belgium). But they are clearly a good side and more than capable of beating England on their day. Many, before this game, didn't believe England would win and the majority didn't expect it to be easy if we did. To suggest the German team are in someway past it, when three of their players just won the Champions League this season, and 4 or 5 of them were winners of the champions league the season before, is ridiculous.
