In fairness to Chrisd, for much of the first half we were passing it backwards a lot, very slow play, giving away the ball too often.
But ... we kept it tight in defence, Pickford was excellent, absorbed German pressure, then were able to turn it on in the later stages with enough flair to get the goals and win the game.
Arguably, that's the right approach for tounament play, where conserving energy, efficiency and peaking at the right time are the most important things to do. |
I mentioned Pickford on an earlier thread, think he’s really maturing well, his decision making is much improved and far more assured. He was very good today, made important serves at crucial times. | |

It was a grind. I think we look sort of half way to being a decent side. We potentially have some exciting players coming through but that’s the future.
For now, we have our limitations, but we have beaten Germany and are in the next round. Nothing else matters. Germany were dead ordinary in 1990 and 1996, but the found a way to win the tournament. That’s what we have to do, if necessary.
I thought Grealish made a difference when he came on. Saka is some talent too, but the MOM for me was Maguire, despite him keeping Mings out.

I actually thought that Portugal looked very ordinary when they won the Euros in 2016. Its been proven that you don't need to play exciting rip-roaring football to win in tournaments. The pathway to the final looks very comfortable but I worry if we bump into Italy or Belgium in the final. |

We controlled the pace of the game pretty much throughout. McGuire was immense and could perhaps have had a couple of goals in the first half. Rice, Phillips and Stones also made up a really strong base, and although we didn't unlock the German defence regularly, Sterling and Saka did cause them a lot of problems. That was a much better performance than many people are giving the team credit for. |  |

However, this isn’t a top German side no matter how people try to convince themselves because we have beaten them in the knockout stages of a major tournament for first time for god knows how long?! We reduced Germany to just two decent chances and they failed to take them, whereas England took theirs. England were also far more direct in their running with Sterling and Grealish than the Germans.

Portugal only won one game deservedly - against Wales. They based their play on defence and the might of Ronaldo in attack.
Greece in 2004 were organised to the hilt and a centre forward who took his chances when they came.
