How would people feel about a midtable finish this season? 11:31 - Sep 27 with 5588 viewsOriginalMarkyP

Statistically speaking, if we were to finish 8th or 9th based on where we are now that would be a pretty good rest of the season performance.

Portsmouth finished 8th on 72pts last season in what was by most accounts a pretty poor league and not as competitive as this year's competition. We were of course 9th on 69pts.

So to match Portsmouth last season we'd need 65 pts from our remaining 38 games...bearing in mind we arguably haven't played any of the league's big hitters yet (Sunderland, Wigan, Wycombe, Portsmouth, Rotherham, Accrington etc).

That's 1.7 pts per game from now on. To get 8th.

1.7 pts per game over an entire season would get you 79 pts which is borderline automatic promotion form as the average 2nd place is 86.7, Peterborough were 2nd with 87 last year.

So applying a little logic and realism, our most likely finish if we have a very good season from Tuesday onwards is 8th. Probably 9th if we dip at all. Where we finished last year.

Is that acceptable for us?

This league is crap.

I was very disappointed we didn't get promotion in the first season, I was merely upset we didn't get at least play offs last season. I will be mortified if we don't go up this season.

I did say 'borderline automatic'. But playoff form most definetly.

But pedantism aside we'd have to play bloody well and pretty consistently to finish 8th. And from where we are now that would be a very good result.

It's not where I want us to finsh, I'd like to go up as Champions obvs.

But statistically promotion is very unlikely to happen there seems to be a fair degree of La La La I'm Not Listening (automatic downvote) from quite a few on the board when you present them with the facts.

They're downvoting you for accepting it, not for predicting it. It is entirely possible, likely even, that we finish this season mid-table. But doing so would be a massive failure, not just a failure to start the season well but also a failure of a season in general.

There are lots of coaches in the division whose teams out-perform their budgets. We'd be under-performing ours not just at the start, but also in the middle and end. Absolutely no reason why we should be content with that.

This squad should be getting promoted.

I'm not going to lower my expectations because the manager has not yet got us going. I think the axe would swing very soon after promotion was ruled out. If that is during the 46 game season then something has gone badly wrong.

Right now I consider losing the play off final a sacking offence. IF we got there and everything had clicked for an extended period of time and we had automatic promotion for half a season then of course he should stay.

But right now, there are no excuses with this squad.

Truly impaired.

You're presenting facts and then misrepresenting them, as I've shown. At the start of the season we'd have said 79 points isn't enough given our resources, so achieving that kind of result over the next 38 games really isn't the massive achievement you make it out to be.

Yes it’s not amazing

But the quality has significantly improved since we’ve been stuck in it

That’s what pundits and managers agree upon

MK Dons and Burton looked good teams to me

Weds were not amazing but they have quality and they went solid against us and we couldn’t break through

Bolton moved the ball very well

Wigan and Sunderland are flying

Again, I'm trying to ask all the See no evil, speak no evil Cook will get us up posters if 8th is ok.

When I say to finish 8th would be a big achievement from where we are now, I'm just pointing out that we'd have to play really well and pick up a fairly decent haul of points to just finish 8th.

8th for me, would be absolute failure to be clear. And Cook would be gone no doubt. Along with Morsy, Celina and Bonne...at least.

But this is the reality of where we are. So I'm just asking the Cook will come good brigade if they'll settle for it.

I doubt it very much on both fronts.

You have to accept that Town have just gone back in time - victims of offshore opportunists sensing a killing with very little effort.

The big difference is that last time it was an individual chancer, prepared to wait for a lottery win, until covid sent his businesses, real and imagined, into a downward spiral that made putting minimal finance into the rotting corpse of ipswich Town unsustainable - he is still of the opinion that there is easy money to be made, hence he owns as much (or as little) as the three turkey vultures.

The downside of the franchise is that none of the vultures in residence, nor in the USA have anything much to lose - they are just having a wager on other people's money, and paying themselves handsomely in the meantime - again with borrowed money. Fine for now - but at some point unknown the Ohio Property Fund will call a very quick halt to their ill-advised largesse.

Its interesting that you see promotion out of division three as an achievement. That could and should have been possible last season - and would only be the beginning of Town's problems. There's only half a dozen clubs in this division who think they belong in the Prem. There are twenty in the division above.

I'm having a party and would love you to come to it. But just for the last half hour when I want people to leave. Thanks.

Obviously isn't acceptable.

Going up via the playoffs is still very much a failure with the squad we have assembled, that is the absolute minimum that we have to achieve.

Wow. I seem to be an oulier here. I've always seen us this season with 19 new players as transitional, us as a work in progress, and I'm prepared to be patient. But if we don't go up either this season OR next, then that would be unacceptable & a failure imho.

We have 19 new players and Wigan have 15. They're top and we're bottom 4. How come our manager kept talking of 'time reqd to bed in' when Wigan have managed? With the money we've spent we HAVE to get promoted this season. I'd obviously accept via the play-offs, but i'm still wanting top 2. That can't be considered unreasonable.

It would give us the desired result but questions have to be asked if we can't come top two in this division with all of the advantages we have.

If you over 40 ....majority of them probably not

If you're under it. Majority will be happy as long as matchdays are fun and we are competitive

Exactly understand we have to give Cook some time with all the new players but his record really is poor, you have to remember when he came in we won a couple of games on the bounce and was in the top 6. Pressure should be on him to deliver promotion this season and if by end of Oct we are still near bottom then sorry but he has to go

Wigan had 9 when the season started

Many of whom had already played with other players at the club under the same guidance as leam with the same formation.

Hopefully we are on our way now. However we've suffered from some painful individual errors along the way. And how different could some of the results have been... Bonne miss. Fraser pen. Evans trip etc.

Fine lines indeed.

A late push into the play-offs and playing consistent good football... on 14:08 - Sep 27 with 1296 viewsunstableblue

.. is the minimum for me

If the football was looking very strong, and the team and system looked robust and sustainable, perhaps being just on the edge of play-offs and missing out would be acceptable. But we'd have to have a Wigan like start to next season, or you'd have to try someone else as manager.

You point out really well just how close we are to letting the seasons get away from us from a PPG perspective

Tomorrow is SUCH a must win game, which will bring pressure on player and manager. But also Doncaster are desperate to turn their season around as well. No game is easy now matter how people slate this league. BUT, we should be too strong

Based on where we are now, we'll have had hell of a good rest of the season to end up finishing somewhere like 8th. To do better than averaging a draw and win every 3 games we'll have been flying, and that in itself would generate a feel good factor about the place even if we miss the playoffs.

The players obviously need to believe and just keep going, but the chance of making top 6 is pretty slim (and getting smaller by the week).
