What’s the worst traffic jam you’ve ever been stuck in? 12:39 - Dec 8 with 3024 viewsSuperblue95

Or how has a traffic jam inconvenienced you the most?

I’ve been sitting in a traffic jam for about an hour now and moved about a mile in that time, meaning I’m going to miss the exam I have this afternoon.

I’m bored and pretty annoyed but am sure there must be people on here with proper horror stories about missing flights, job interviews, big events, etc, etc after spending hours sat in traffic.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Getting stuck on the motorway for about 90 minutes when already pretty desperate for the loo.

Sorry to hear that. I think about 4 hours for me, for a road closure as it was a fatality. When say in those I always try and think it could be worse, you could be the poor person at the front.

That’s a fair point. Although in this case I think it’s due to the motorway being closed due to storm damage and this trying to divert thousands of cars through a town

M6 on the way North to cover Liverpool v Everton in 2016. Always used to leave to get to the ground 3 hours before kick off. Means you can get a seat in the wire room and a pie/coffee before most snappers arrive.

M6 was so bad around Knutsford Services that we were completely stationary for two and a half hours. Got to the ground at 7:50, and straight out onto the pitch. No pie, no coffee sat there, shooting the most uninspiring derby game ever, starving hungry and thirsty. Game finished, got into the wire room, no pies left and only fecking oat milk to put in my coffee.

That was a very grumpy drive home and then they closed the M5 for works at West Bromwich, so another hour long diversion.

Livid.

Crossing the Gurgaon to Delhi border leading up to Independence day in India.

Gave up, walked 5KM back to a mall off the motorway and got a motorbike taxi home. Didn't go to the office for a week as it just didn't clear.

Probably 40 mins max.

I tend to not commit to ever driving on a stretch of road where I do not have an alternative route or the option to turn around.

Always use Google maps too, so I am aware if the route I am on suffers from problems 'up stream'

I found myself stuck in a queue for no obvious reason on the A14 Eastbound. It was only just the other side of Cambridge and I lived just outside of Bury so roughly half hour or so from home.

I was desperate for a wee and beside myself when I saw this never ending queue so jumped off onto some road as soon as I could. Followed it until I found a suitable spot and leapt out behind a bush.

Every turn I took after that was wrong, whenever I got close to the A14 the effing roads were blocked and diversion signs were being put up all over the shop with no further directions to follow up. I drove deeper and deeper into the countryside...

It took me something mad like 4 hours to get home from fecking Cambridge.

I once set off from Manchester to drive to Dorset. left at 11am in order to try and miss most of the friday traffic.... a crash before I got to the M6, and a crash on the M6, meant I arrived in Birmingham at rush hour.... they closed the A34 near Newbury, and then the ringwood roundabout was snarled up, I think in the end it took me about 10 hours to do a 4.5 hour journey. Had a lot of beer catchup to do on arrival.

Mine was 3 weeks back at Marks Tey where I work. Just joined the A12 off the slip road to find they shut the road. I was on the way back to a scan with my missus for our babe (luckily it was only a check up scan at 32 weeks so wasn't missing anything important). Left work at 1, and finally got through my front door back in Ipswich at 6pm.

Sat on the A12 until 4.45pm when the Police finally decided to start turning cars round.

Use the hard shoulder and zoom away to the nearest services, worked for Sir Alex Ferguson when he was pulled over by the police for using the hard shoulder and court believed him so must be a valid excuse!

I used to work part time for a race team. I was driving to Spa in Belgium to meet the team. It was during a strike by the French dock workers so operation stack was in operation. Added 45 minutes to the drive to the tunnel (I lived down south back then too) so near enough doubled the drive to the tunnel. I was then motoring along the E42 despite my sat nav saying to get off the motorway (me being me knew better than a sat nav that got live traffic updates), came round the corner and then was stationary for 4 hours. Ended up getting to the track at midnight, having to creep in to our truck where we were sleeping and having 4 hours sleep before getting up and working all day.

The coldest, numbest and draining I've ever been at a football match.

The weather made it miserable too.

Getting out of Ipswich tbe year Sir Bobby died. 1st game of the season vs Leics and a tribute to the great man.

My Leics supporting mate and I made tbe journey

Getting there took hours, we missed tbe 1st half and the tribute Getting back was even worse.

Top it off we watched 45 mins of dire football and it finished nil nil and had a row with the grade a prat sat behind us.

I like it when you're on the m25 and then speeds they put up mock you. 35 it says as you crawl under at 4 mph. What I'd give for 35 mph I think.

Ask Phil

Indeed, I think the two that day surpass any I've previously been stuck in.

I also once was late for a Roy Keane press conference as someone overturned their car at the fork by Sutton Hoo, leading to a lengthy detour, hard stare and claim that he'd never been late when I apologised, despite it being a few weeks after he'd had to cancel his press conference having been unable to get out of his driveway in Aldeburgh due to snow.

Best traffic jam I was stuck in was Raspberry. The ripple up to Colchester was painful. Didn't help that Phil's mysterious doppelganger was up my car's arse while I was trying to eat a chunky kitkat.

Was in Jeddah one February when there was a sudden storm. Hailstones like golf balls. I worked in the port and one ship which started out starboard side alongside lost its forward mooring ropes in the storm and finished up facing the other way. We lived on a compound about three miles from the port and the drive home took over six hours through the flooded city.

About thirty-two years ago was in central London when there was a sudden, heavy snowfall. Took six hours to get to Gallows Corner. Couldn't get any further so, along with several other drivers, slept in motor and drove home next morning. Some kind girls saw our predicament and brought out tea, soup, sandwiches which they were happy to give us though I and others insisted that they should take some payment.

At least three other occasions have been sat for three hours or more due to accidents ahead.
