F1 showdown thread 11:38 - Dec 12 with 16783 views | bluelagos | In case anyone is unaware, is live on C4 today, coverage starts at 12, race at 1pm. Winner takes all. We are watching history, have no doubt this season will be made into a film in time, much as the great "Rush" and "Senna" were. I'll be shouting for Max. Much as I love Hamilton and his amazing career, the talent of Verstappen is undeniable. Time for the new pretender or for the old guard to get the all time record for F1 championships?

F1 showdown thread on 18:25 - Dec 12 by WD19 | Folks on the radio described him winking and high fiving after coming out of the stewards. Can’t see the result being changed. |
Me neither, good news for the lawyers though. I reckon it'll go to court.

That’s F1 done for me. Can’t watch a sport that doesn’t apply its own rules.

Have watched my entire life and what I saw today was a farce and essentially cheating, in the open, by the sport’s governing body. I won’t be watching again.

Don't think this will be the end of it. The worry is there will now be plenty who won't watch next season and why should Mercedes spend 150m a year if the rules are random? SB

The only hope is the rules are strengthened and clarified off the back of this, with (even) less room for intepretation. Basically spell everything out word for word.

It's incredible the answer they gave. Yes. The race director can decide how to use the safety car but surely the fact that there was only going to be 1 outcome to the end of the race meant that the race director was himself deciding who wins the championship. The argument about any not meaning all lapped cars is again stupid. Why again can you allow an individual to select the 5 lapped cars only... the reason why he didn't allow all lapped cars to pass is because had he done this, the safety would have missed the pitlane and it would have had to do the last lap. So again race director as an individual deciding how best to get the race back underway to give the championship to max. If I were Lewis. I'd retire from the sport. It's not was f1 has always been about. Its the max and redbull show. Next season it'll all be about Russell or whoever Sky wants to win.

I still can’t quite believe it. If I was the other drivers I’d be livid as well as it’s brought the whole sport into disrepute. Any other race and that ends under the safety car. Race director essentially decided the championship.

Something has to give at some stage doesn't it? From reading the Stewards judgement the laws just aren't specific enough legally imho.

I think that translates as 'the ref made a mistake, but any corrective action cannot include removing the last lap' so no scenario where Hamilton can be handed the race.

It's a nonsense. If they wanted a race for the last lap why wasn't Sainz allowed to catch-up Max and race him as well? SB

The last 2 races have been brilliant. Better than watching Match of the Day of Penalty Kicks.

My reading was the FIA are giving themselves the let off that the Safety Car is at the Race Directors discretion, so whatever he says goes.

Accept that the ref had to make a highly pressured decision, in limited time and maybe made a mistake?
