The more I think about it, the more I'd like to go with McGreal 10:01 - Dec 13 with 3545 viewsurbanblue

Until the end of the season.

Let's face it getting promotion is a bit of a long shot even with a new appointment coming in. McGreal has been working with the players for a good few days now and they certainly responded on Saturday. If a new man comes in it'll be a new start again and for sure wouldn't take charge until after Saturday. The players may well be getting used to McGreal and settling down now.

McGreal did alright under difficult conditions at Colchester. He comes across well in interviews and he might be a gem working with a more talented squad. People like Lowe and Manning all started from scratch and are proving talented so why not McGreal?

I say let's give him a go. We can take our time finding the new man for next season if it doesn't work out.

Not for me, if you have given up on the season, should have kept Cook.

Mcgreal would not even be under consideration, if he hadn't been a very good player for us.

Worst performance in 10 years? Come on, how can you have forgotten the FA Cup replay defeat at non-league Lincoln?

It was worse in my opinion.

21 shots for Charlton. 15 on target.
1 shot for us. 0 on target.

A complete disgrace.

McGreal is a nice bloke, well liked around the club, was great here as a player and is certainly a competent coach — but he's not the man for our long term and I think keeping him on because promotion is unlikely would ensure a fairly agonising next few months. Might still be the case whoever we appoint but the owners will want to go for it and show ambition.

If the owners thought promotion impossible, I don't think they'd have dismissed Cook.

The alternatives are exactly A-list.

Exactly, so the more I think about it the more I suspect what comes next might be fairly eyecatching.

You would be happy to appoint a manager who has yet to experience a promotion after four seasons in league 2?

I urge you to dream bigger my friend! We have the largest budget in League 1, coupled with American owners financed through a pension fund. Time is of the essence and mediocrity will not be tolerated, hence Cook’s dismissal.

As others have said, it would seem mad to sack Cook and then make that kind of appointment. I'm desperately hoping they had a plan in place prior to pulling the trigger which will be something to get the excitement back.

I know it's not a universally popular opinion but I would still rather we got Neil Warnock in until the end of the season than write it off before Christmas and settle for McGreal.

I think with half a season left he could really get us going in the new year. It's almost silly where two or three wins on the spin can take you in this division and he's a very good manager despite his age.

Point taken although our last two managers had League 1 promotions on their CV's and look where that got us ...

I did also say just for the rest of the season to then review.

My thoughts may be due to being completely underwhelmed by all the names being put forward. There may be many more good candidates at the end of the season.

We will see ...

I don't mind Mcgreal if we think we need to keep looking for the best long term fit.

Rather that than appoint Neil Harris.

No. As others have said, he doesn't come with a great pedigree and we wouldn't be remotely interested if he hadn't played for us and been local.

We've tried "Pedigree" the last 7 appointments, hardly gone well has it?

Having someone with a promotion on their CV has turned out to be complete wibble.

I really like Johnny Mac, but would be a pretty underhwhelming appointment when you look at everything else going on around the club, and the club still stating they want to go up this year.

Yes, maybe underwhelming but I find most of the names being bandied about pretty underwhelming as well. I mean, for example, if we end up with another League 1 manager like Manning or Robinson I'd be thinking that McGreal may well be better.

In fairness the next two games will tell us more. I mean, if a new manager isn't appointed before Saturday and we get a couple of good wins under McGreal and Dyer would we really want to stop that momentum?

I think if we're going down the route of appointing someone without much track record then it can't just be the case of appointing whoever happens to be in the building. I'd want us to be talking to people about their ideas on coaching, tactics and player development over the longer term. I'd want us to be talking to people in the game about their ability and potential. I'd want us to be appointing someone who was widely expected to go very very far in the game.

I can't see that John McGreal's who you land on if you do that.

That doesn't mean we should instead employ people who've done nothing of note even at L2 level!

To be fair to McGreal he punched above his weight at Col U, obviously didn't pull up too many trees but did a decent job.

And given the names being bandied about, none of them fill me with much enthusiasm.

Getting that young Colchester side to the p/offs was notable, with one of the best defensive records in the division. They seemed to be on to something and showing gradual improvement. So sacking McGreal, and the subsequent change of direction has proven to be madness.

I like the sound of a Manning or another young coach like that - or even someone with a bigger name with little experience as a manager who has earned their stripes as a coach.

Have very little interest in a manager with >150-200 games under their belt as I'd say those are either on the up and unobtainable, or have at best flatlined and won't be going to the top

A foreign appointment with a good pedigree would intrigue me as well

While the list of candidates so far looks unimpressive, what would be the reaction to McGreal if he hadn't been a decent Town player for a few years? This buys him some initial goodwill, but it doesn't mean is more likely to be a good appointment. I suspect Ashton will pick someone with whom he has worked in the past.
