As he's hopefully now on his way out, it's time... 09:08 - Jan 19 with 7528 viewsBlueBadger

...to acknowledge the achievements of Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson.

1. Managing to be the most embarrassing PM the country has ever seen. Yo might not think this is an achievement, but remember that one of his predecessors shagged a dead pig.

To extend the Titanic analogy:

We are where we are now. The ship is headed for the iceberg. That iceberg is the slate of legislation that removes all the checks and balances in our "unwritten Constitution", kills the right to protest, politicises both the Police and Military, gerrymanders constituency boundaries, introduces voter suppression measures, ignores international law and binding Treaty obligations, attacks any institution that dares to speak out about abuses or corruption including Judges, the BBC, the RNLI and the National Trust, and ignores reports into electoral corruption written by, and "reforms" in revenge, the Electoral Commission.

The Ship is Parliamentary Democracy.

Now, given that the Captain is determined to sail the thing full pelt at the iceberg to sink it, are you going to back the one person who, under the present system, is in position to lead any kind of resistance and fight back which might see that disaster averted?

Or are you going to refuse to because you would only support the bloke who didn't get the job as Captain and who would have steered a different course?

No, I hope he has to look outside of his own centre-right position to gather support. Either through a progressive alliance that forces a commitment to a lot of these issues or by creating the broad church and representative platform for which he campaigned and was elected as leader.

If he continues the slide right then I hope he crashes and burns. We don’t need Blair Mark 2 that helped create or worsen many of the current problems we’re failing to deal with.

With anti-science supporters such as yourself and Graham Stringer on the right, it hard to see any end in sight to the factionalism.

You might want to re-visit those figures. Labour got 40% of the vote in 2017 and doesn’t have to appeal to hardcore Tories and further right either.

What happened after that was a national scandal. Utter internal and external sabotage and manufactured crises designed to delegitimise and distract, by people whose interests were ultimately served better by Boris and the Tories being in power rather than someone like Corbyn who saw the wider interests of UK citizens as more important.

Amazing the number of people on here and elsewhere who nodded along to it and even amplified it but still want to be seen as defenders of democracy, equality and justice. Well, they’ve certainly got a Labour Party now in their own image – and the sort of Conservative party that results from that lip service.

The 30 versus 40 thing is a reference to the 2019 result.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50779901

I voted for Labour under Corbyn, at both General Elections. I supported his policies, in the main. I believed the many Doctors and Nurses who united in the "X days to save the NHS" campaign, and reposted their videos in the run up to the Election. I was devastated that he lost.

But right now we are facing a post-Trump culture wars Tory machinery that is emboldened and ripping apart all of the checks and balances on their power, under the guise of Brexit necessities and Covid emergency powers. The speed with which they have moved is staggering, and took me by surprise.

If we don't stop them before the next General Election by coming together (and I am including SNP, Lib Dems and Greens in this) and focusing all our fire on them, rather than each other, then there may not be another General Election.

Of course. And I explained the context that led up to it that people are so keen to ignore: wildly overblown antisemitism accusations, Brexit/People’s vote manoeuvrings, and the whole internal party briefings/Change UK silliness.

Meanwhile the actual real issues of who Johnson and his cabinet were, his and the Tory record over the previous decade or more and what their manifesto was saying about the UK’s future were pretty much ignored.

2019 was handed to Johnson and the Tories on a plate by those efforts. Forgive me if I don’t pay any attention to those people and those who nodded along or amplified them. I fundamentally believe that they not only don’t know what’s right for the UK and citizens but that they’re dangerously active against anything that risks their own selfish interests.

Certainly part of it. The misrepresentation of Momentum as basically the new Militant was both ridiculous and ignorant. It is/was a grassroots campaigning movement for progressive values – and a very effective one too when it wasn’t being lied about.
