He'll have had his tea.

RIP.

Noooooooooo!

Unsung absolute comic genius.

He was behind pretty much everything we've found funny over the last 50+ years.
A huge loss to the comic industry and a sad day to all who were close to him.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

He'd only just started a podcast with his son, which I'd put to one side and hadn't got round to yet. Stuck at 6 now, with the last one just 13 days ago.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

No!

Wasn't one of my favourites when I was younger, but he really grew on me on ISIHAC.

I saw him to an after dinner speech once, just came across as naturally funny and absolutely charming. Not a bad life though.

Cryer, the master of the comedy sketch and the instant one-liner, was once asked by the Yorkshire Post for his favourite joke. He recalled one he had told in a student revue in 1955.

"A man drives down a country lane and runs over a cockerel. He knocks at a nearby farmhouse door and a woman answers.

"'I appear to have killed your cockerel,' he says. 'I'd like to replace it.' The woman replies: 'Please yourself - the hens are round the back.'"

(Please DOWNVOTE this joke if you like it, I think that's appropriate somehow.)

I met him once on a project I was involved in. Not only a total legend who knew the whole history of British comedy, but absolutely the loveliest man you could hope to meet. What a life. RIP.

Another one gone who's been a constant throughout life. He was from the generation above me, but it's a depressing reminder that we're all getting closer.

On that cheery note, RIP Barry

I’ve dipped in and out of twitter all day reading tributes to him and absolutely nobody has anything even resembling a bad word to say about him. Universally loved and respected, and by the sounds of it incredibly supportive to all newcomers on the comedy circuit.

A sad loss.

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about whose death you would most be saddened by. I put Barry Cryer. I hope there was no connection.

Only just read this. What do you mean by the way?

What did he ever do anyway? He's always seemed to be the bloke who popped up talking about people like Harry Sycombe, Eric Sykes, Lionel Blair etc when they died.

I'm sure he was a nice guy but when I've seen him trying to be funny he wasn't.

Was he actually a comedian?

He probably wrote more of the stuff we've laughed at over the years buddy rather than performing it.

Dave Allen among one of the big names he used to write with apparently.

Big history in radio comedy too.

Was quite shocked when I looked it up to find that 'Clue' has been going since 1972 - like many, I went into and through adulthood with it & him.

Have found myself quite teary hearing some of the clips being played in tribute today. All R.I.Ps are sad, but with his I'm absolutely gutted, will miss him so much. Speaks volumes that his humour appealed to so many across several generations & was never dodgy or cheap, he had a sharp, satirical wit, a wonderful way with words, & great comic timing.
