Labour need a new leader 06:14 - May 6 with 14344 viewsgtsb1966

and fast. Yesterday's results are proving that. He just doesn't resonate with the electorate unfortunately. The only way to get this rabble out is for a new labour leader. I just hope it happens because if it doesn't this excuse of government will get another five years.

Your use of 'we' is very confusing - most of your posting has been conveyed as very pro-tory with Corbyn being your personal stress ball. I know we all miss the heady days where we could hold hands with English expats in tory denial, but it's good to let go!
[Post edited 6 May 2022 10:04]

surely you remember that everyone who criticised corbyn was labelled a tory. trouble is that too many voters took that slur at face value in 2019 and thought they might as well vote tory.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Attempted smear it may be but if the police think there is something to investigate then they have to do their duty. If they find him (and maybe Angela R?) guilty of breaking the lockdown rules then well that will make his position untenable

What is it about the openly bigoted, corrupt incompetent criminal Boris Johnson that appeals to you?

Given that Labour currently have more than double the Tory vote, including places like Westminster that have been Tory since 1964, AND most of the votes haven't been counted yet, in what way have they "failed"?

I thought it notable that Labour has done better in places where there would seem to be a higher proportion of better educated voters - e.g. London & university city Southampton.

It's a ridiculous smear because what he did wasn't against the law at the time.

Johnson literally broke the law he set.

Yes, that's what I meant.

This where Strmer has a problem.

The law stated at the time that “There should not be any sharing of food and drink by staff who do not share a household.”

Starmer and his staff shared two hundred quids worth of Indian takeaway in an office. And they were drinking beer. They also held an online quiz.

I don't have any issue with what Starmer and others did that night. It is nothing like the booze in a supermarket trolly party at number 10. Or the Abba night. Or any of the other blatant parties that were held in number 10.

Hooooooowever. Here is where KS has a problem. Sunak received a fine for arriving 5 minutes early for a meeting at an office where Johnson was given a birthday cake. Had Starmer kpt his sights on Johnson and his flagrant rule breaking, then if he is fined for the Durham gathering it would have been small beer (pardon the pun). But by calling for Sunak to resign over a technicality then his position is untenable if Durham police fine him.

Here you go: https://keirstarmer.com/candidate-statement/

"If all parts of the labour and trade union movement come together, we can achieve anything."

He then proceeds, once elected leader, to silence the left of the party and the trades union movement. Hardly inclusive, is it?

That's pretty flimsy as "lies" go. And the left aren't silent anyway.
But getting them to fall in line is an attempt to unite the party, so I'm not sure how that can be described as a lie. To get unity something has to give somewhere. It's hardly a lie in the way "There weren't any parties... oh no I've been fined for being at a party" is.

I'd love to see in any of my historical posts where I have said anything remotely "yes but labour". Go on have a look, happy to wait.

What is it about this police investigation that is worrying you? Shouldn't you let them decide what the truth is here? Or are you saying that because it's the labour party they don't have to respect this?

I hope there is nothing to find, I suspect that there isn't. However, if the police have decided there is something to look at then i will wait until then.

Only some councils are being elected, and many of them are metropolitan boroughs and London boroughs that usually vote Labour. The vote share is not reflective of the entire country.

Also, this was published earlier by the BBC - at that point Labour had actually lost seats outside London:

True - but in some ways that’s a concern from a Labour perspective. They’ve only strengthened in areas where they were doing well. Granted that results are still coming in, but they were actually down overall outside of London which suggests they haven’t inspired the return of the provincial working class.

I think only the Greens and Lib Dems can genuinely feel pleased with the results.

The south of England should be a major concern for Labour.

I think the narrative has been too heavy on trying to win back the red wall in the north.

Moderate Tory voters or floating voters who have previously voted Tory seem have gone to the Lib Dems and the Greens. That is unlikely to happen in a general election where the Lib Dems are seen as a wasted vote and do not have a particularly charismatic leader in the Nick Clegg/ Charles Kennedy mould.

My point was the opposite of cherrypicking. I was trying to point out to you that the "overall stats" are not a true reflection of the whole UK because only a limited set of (usually Labour) areas are holding local elections this year; if anything, using the "overall stats" is cherrypicking because it's not the full picture.

I would disagree on that point to an extent. In many areas of the South (including mine) they are usually the second biggest party, and the only realistic way of ejecting a conservative MP (in which case a Labour vote is a wasted vote).
