Labour need a new leader 06:14 - May 6 with 14590 viewsgtsb1966

and fast. Yesterday's results are proving that. He just doesn't resonate with the electorate unfortunately. The only way to get this rabble out is for a new labour leader. I just hope it happens because if it doesn't this excuse of government will get another five years.

London deserves better - whatsapps full of pissed off labour voting Londoners wondering about independence*.

*Maybe not, full - just some bods I know.

Wait till the Tower Hamlets results come through...

I very grudgingly gave the woeful Labour mayor my second preference, but I fear Lutfur Rahman will be back...

True - but in some ways that’s a concern from a Labour perspective. They’ve only strengthened in areas where they were doing well. Granted that results are still coming in, but they were actually down overall outside of London which suggests they haven’t inspired the return of the provincial working class.

I think only the Greens and Lib Dems can genuinely feel pleased with the results.

It just rather reinforced my feeling that those who are still voting tory are either incapable of thinking rationally*, or are unwilling to do so, possibly due to tribalism.

*Some might call 'em "thick", I couldn't possibly comment

My point was the opposite of cherrypicking. I was trying to point out to you that the "overall stats" are not a true reflection of the whole UK because only a limited set of (usually Labour) areas are holding local elections this year; if anything, using the "overall stats" is cherrypicking because it's not the full picture.

Interesting, cheers, esp KS's point that if Labour can win in Cumbria, they can win anywhere.

You're on the ropes fella.

It was double in terms of seats... and still is. As I write Labour = 1514, Tory = 760.

I don't think that's really true though; three of the four parliamentary constituencies covered by the new Cumberland Council (Carlisle, Copeland and Workington) were relatively recently held by Labour (Carlisle until 2010, Copeland until 2017 and Workington until 2019). It's not like rural Suffolk where it's always been Conservative.

You have Tory friends? That makes you an actual Nazi.

edit. For the benefit of our more delicate posters, I do not believe that TDS is an actual Nazi.
[Post edited 6 May 2022 14:11]

I notice the downvote- then some passive-aggressive comment in the edit, so I will reply here. It's not about being delicate, it's about being decent. Even in jest, I feel it is important to keep the 'is a nazi' statement in check, particularly when the leaders of Russia have done a lot to muddy the waters around word lately.

With many young people throwing the word around without realising/caring about the association it has with the origin, I happen to think it is important, and not delicate, to not trivialise the understanding of what a Nazi really is.

I hope you agree this motivation is more from a place of being noble than it is from a place of being delicate.

Now this is funny. Bloke stands as a paper candidate in a Tory seat that he supposedly had no chance of winning. Didn't bother canvassing . Went to bed as normal only to be woken up in the middle of the night to be told to get down to the count as it was getting very close. Ends up being elected.

I thought it notable that Labour has done better in places where there would seem to be a higher proportion of better educated voters - e.g. London & university city Southampton.

Not so. Bingley? Colne Valley? Bradford Queensbury? Taken from Tories.

This where Strmer has a problem.

The law stated at the time that “There should not be any sharing of food and drink by staff who do not share a household.”

Starmer and his staff shared two hundred quids worth of Indian takeaway in an office. And they were drinking beer. They also held an online quiz.

I don't have any issue with what Starmer and others did that night. It is nothing like the booze in a supermarket trolly party at number 10. Or the Abba night. Or any of the other blatant parties that were held in number 10.

Hooooooowever. Here is where KS has a problem. Sunak received a fine for arriving 5 minutes early for a meeting at an office where Johnson was given a birthday cake. Had Starmer kpt his sights on Johnson and his flagrant rule breaking, then if he is fined for the Durham gathering it would have been small beer (pardon the pun). But by calling for Sunak to resign over a technicality then his position is untenable if Durham police fine him.

Bang on! Keir may be hoisted with his own petard here and when his behaviour doesn't merit this scrutiny. Casting Rishi's birthday transgression in the same light as Boris' relentless pursuit of the bottom also served to dilute some of the public ire IMO.

Oh behave.

"With many young people throwing the word around without realising/caring about the association it has with the origin"

Your fellow companions have often accused Tories of being Nazis/ fascists/racists. I never saw you once pull them up.

They were the butt of my joke.

I've obviously offended you for pointing out that Lowhouse isn't a Tory. You've gone from shoehorning in a post from October of last year to jumping on a light hearted post to TDS.

It's as if you are acting as a proxy to have a pop at me.

I'll leave it there.

This isn't the first time I have voiced an up-onion on this as it happens.

I'm not having a pop at you, but I am having a pop at a bit of bad form. And I am not offended by anything you said about Lowhouse - I found his reply to mine to be a perfectly amicable retort (as made obvious by not doubling down on it).

As for your penultimate line - you might want to make it a bit clearer what you mean by this, as this passive-aggressive polka is not a great way to keep my superior mind invigorated.

Here you go. A 5-minute read. And there’s plenty more detail if you google for it. Small price to pay for understanding the issues, right?

https://the-free-press.co.uk/2021/03/28/keir-starmers-10-socialist-pledges-foren

That Starmer has broken his pledges and lied during the leadership campaign isn’t even in doubt for those of the membership who took him at his word that he would build on the foundation of the 2017 manifesto. But a bit like Vote Leave or the antisemitism smear campaign against Corbyn, it seems people don’t care about lies if it gets them what they want. And forcibly distancing Labour from even social democracy seems to make a lot of people happy.

Unfortunately it seems Rahman has won in Tower Hamlets; it's going to second preferences, but he is 12,000 ahead and there are only a maximum of 17,000 second preference votes; there's no way the Labour mayor will make up the gap.

How tf is Rahman getting back in? I suppose for the same reasons he was voted in in the first place... Sigh.
