Sounds like the guy doesn't have the funds to conclude the deal and it will collapse today.

If they don't get a buyer they'll just keep drifting down the league until they do go bankrupt.

The EFL have got to explore every possible avenue though as any football fan would expect them to do, but the hole they are in is so big that they could easily go pop - I certainly wouldn't want it to happen though

Me neither. Not sure how any genuine football fan who loves their club could wish another set of fans to lose their club.

We're obviously spending considerably more than we make in revenue. That's obviously not sustainable in the long term.

Even if it were sustainable it still distorts the competition in exactly the way you complained about up thread. We blow other clubs out of the water with our financial muscle, we hijack deals, we have an inflationary effect on fees and wages etc. In terms of fair competition for other clubs a Mel Morris is no different to a GC20.

Last summer's transfer window was uncomfortable, even if I don't approach the argument with the hindsight of last season. In some ways it was a necessary evil as we didn't have many assets to achieve the task at hand - but, it lacked a fair degree of common sense.

The test case needs longer to develop, however. If we continue to act like that every season without showing any improvement (as Derby had done) then the alarm bells will start ringing. We have a long way to go as yet, we have yet to bloat up to a playing squad of nearly 40 players with some deals seeming to be more in the mind to deny other clubs rather than improving our own.

Does anyone ever "lose" their club? Every league club that goes bust gets re-founded. A football club doesn't die when it's still got a fanbase.

That isn't the motivation, that is a huge difference. The motivation is that DCFC have been in administration for nearly 1 year, and are walking along like zombies with the debt getting harder to manage, thus making the club more undesirable to would-be backers

DCFC needs a definitive direction for their fans and for other clubs that this impacts - if a suitable buyer cant be found after the club has been in administration for this long, then who keeps picking up the bill?

The longer this goes on, the more susceptible DCFC are for being taken over by a chancer worse than Morris, that is my main concern in all of this - more bullsh*t merchants being allowed into boardrooms to prey on the carcus of a wounded animal.

But they will start off much nearer to the bottom and could take decades to make it back to where they left off. So the club may not die but it won’t feel the same for a long long time.

I expect Mike Ashley might swoop in now to save them.

I wonder if it’s due to the owner of their stadium not will to sell it to the prospective buyers !

What is the difference between declaring the club bankrupt now, vs then? They are approaching nearly 1 year in administration (September 22 2021) - That is a very generous time to be financially against the ropes.

They've attempted to be the bully boys of the championship.
Outpaying most.
Silly waged have caught up to them.
Desperate times called, New owner needed.

The big question here, is by whom?

And the story seems to suggest the would-be buyer is no longer in the mix. Mel Morris still has the ability to strangle the situation as well, the stadium is a big bone of contention.

My view point on this is particularly harsh, given how we've gone through administration and, as other have pointed out, GC20 may well give us an unfair advantage - but Derby can't remain in limbo forever - and if they do go under then the EFL should be the source of the inquisition.

My impatience here is that Derby, Middlesborough, Wycombe and other clubs (to a lesser extent) all deserve closure. If DCFC start 2022/2023 with a points deduction, it just makes the whole game look embarrassing as this scenario has been playing out for long enough already.

But if you can successfully pretend to have £5m for long enough, you get a nice house. Which can then be mortgaged to give you real money to spend. Plus the status and seeming respectability to acquire more stuff.

If it sounds like a confidence trick, that's because it is.

See also this, attributed to former Derby County chairman, Robert Maxwell, paraphrasing JM Keynes:

"If you owe the bank £500, you have a problem. If you owe the bank £500 million, they have a problem."

For the good of football, a "big" club needs to go bust... a disaster for the fans of that club though.

Derby could be the sacrificial rams.

Derby aren't big enough to start the sort of change you are seeking. Not even close.

Apologies if failing to trawl through the whole thread I have missed it mentioned, but isn't this what happened when Notts County became the richest club in football too?

Derby will be absolutely fine. No problem. They’ll be bought out or some sort of ‘arrangement’ will be made for them. Bust and out of business is for Bury, Maidstone, Norwich, Dover and Rushden & Diamonds. And even clubs as Mickey Mouse as those can reform if the demand is there.

Derby are far from too big for that to happen to them as well. I doubt much of the footballing world would bat an eyelid if it did happen. However, they also appear to be a club that have a thousand lives. The end seemed to come far more rapidly for Bury. However, there comes a point at which patience ends. Ultimately the taxman will insist on their chunk and if it isn't readily there they will take the assets.

I was chatting today to a friend who was a taxman until he finished a couple of months ago. He was saying that even before the government gave up on collecting tax, they’d have accepted an arrangement of anything in pound to close the case. Derby won’t be shut down by HMRC any more than Home Office will go after serious criminals. It’s just not a priority.

Derby will be fine and back in the Championship before you know it.

If a club going bust isn't enough of a wake up call to other clubs to live withing their means, then they get what they deserve.

And it was a set up to an (a not so) amazing pun.

Wasn't Tom Lawrence on a reported £35k a week. Don't know if is still there or if he is still on that amount. plus they still have Rooney to pay. All while in administration. Thought the administrators would be cutting debt not making it larger. Mind you Mrs Vardy maybe helping out Rooney.
