Very good figures for Mordaunt. Truss needs an almost clean sweep of second preferences from the hard-right candidates to get into the top 2.
It can be expected that as well as those knocked out, a couple of the next lowest will withdraw and anoint a chosen favourite (in return for a job offer, naturally!)
It isn't impossible that Rishi has got about as many as he is likely to get. He could still come third.

What is it that Tories see in Liz Truss? So far as I can see she is already far out of her depth and is simply doing a Margaret Thatcher tribute act, so blatantly it is almost laughable.
But then I am not very well informed.
So, for them that know these things, what does Liz Truss have about her that appeals to so many Tories?

I have spoken to a very well respected businessman who knows his way around government who is absolutely horrified that Truss is even being considered for PM.
In the politest way possible he indicated that she was as thick as mince

By my reckoning it’s mathematically impossible to come third in the final ballot with 120 or more votes so he only needs to capture another 32 from any discarded candidates. It would take some pretty impressive game playing even by Tory standards for that to happen. All academic because the Tory membership won’t vote him in for a variety of reasons.

Not so much game playing, as "Who are the MPs whose choice has just been eliminated most likely to vote for?"
Some of Zahawi's might go to Sunak, but I think Zahawi is a bit more of a Johnson loyalist than Rishi, so many of those who supported him won't.
Hunt is interesting. He can be seen as clearly anti-Johnson, pro- improving standards in public life, has been consistent on strong lockdown etc re Covid, and relatively Centre Right (compared to some of the others). I would see the closest fit as being Tom Tugenhadt. He might get a small jump here. Or Penny Mordaunt. I think she is one of the "least tainted by association with Johnson", at least in the public eye.
When Braverman goes, I can't see her supporters being pro-Sunak. More likely to go to Truss, if she is still perceived as having a chance.
Tugenhadt's would almost certainly go to Mordaunt. Possible some would go to Sunak, but probably not Truss.
It's a complicated guessing game. The constituency at this stage are Tory MPs, and over 200 are livid at Johnson and fearful of losing their seats. Others support him still. Brexit is the other key issue. Truss, somehow, is seen by the ERG as their candidate.
I stand by my assertion that Rishi might see the gap closed in the next round or two, and could still end up third. Or Truss will open her stupid mouth and Sunak and Mordaunt will romp home.

I have noticed that some people on the left on here have been talking about who would be best (ie the worst) candidate for Labour to have a better chance of getting in.
That’s obviously fair enough and everyone is entitled to their opinion. For me though I don’t really think that way, I want the best person to be at the helm of each party.
So - I also can’t get my head around Truss, she is an imbecile.
I’ve been trying to think but have a brain block. Wasn’t it her who said something along the lines of - “Why do we import cheese”?
“Hello, I'm your MP. Actually I'm not. I'm your candidate. Gosh.”
Boris Johnson canvassing in Henley, 2005.
Mordaunt is going to win. Phwoar eh lads? She can balance my trade deficit anytime. She can input my nuclear codes anytime. She can put me in a hostile environment anytime. Etc.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
I'm ambivalent about which weirdo they elect, but would prefer it not to be Liz Truss as she is the one I am most afraid of taking us into a nuclear war.

I did think we should want the best leader to be our next PM.
And cannot see beyond "none of the above".
Could "no leader" be on the ballot?
Of course, if reinstate Boris was on there, I am fairly sure he would stand a good chance of winning which sums the whole party up really.

Trouble is there is no 'best' candidate and anyone still trying to defend any part of this bunch of people on any level in any way either hasn't been listening or is so stupid they shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a voting booth until they prove they understand the basics of what their responsibilities are.
The fact that even one of their members could suggest cuts to the NHS and education without widespread public ridicule and/or sheer horror at the very suggestion shows how little empathy any of them have.
£350 million extra per week. For crying out loud. This should be brought up every single time anything so much as mentioning healthcare comes up.
Every time. I don't care how dull or boring it gets. They need to grasp this once and for all. It's not acceptable.
Those who fell for it, they flipping voted for it. I'm tired of their whining and pathetic excuses and their attempts to wiggle their way out of it and continuing to deflect their sh1t onto others.
