“The Tractor Boys†14:12 - Feb 1 with 7129 views | dominiciawful | Do any Town fans actually refer to us by that name or is it just the media? It feels weird to have a nickname that is almost solely used by people with no connection to the club, such as national journalists or supporters of other teams.

“The Tractor Boys” on 19:50 - Feb 1 by Stewart27 | This thread pops up quite a bit. I’m not really sure what we are but I’m not remotely arsed. Nicknames are a bit cringy and rarely used are they? The tractor boys and the super blues are both a bit rubbish. I just refer to us as Ipswich. |
TWTD needs a FAQ section.

“The Tractor Boys” on 16:55 - Feb 1 by north_stand77 | Talking of bins, a budgie fan I know always calls us the binners. His reason being that their fans put a Town fan in a wheelie bin after a game once. Does anybody know if that's why? |
In addition to Coastal Blues' factual answer, I'd add it's cos we, err, Town fans trashed their city, most notably twice in '85, the MC SF and again the league game a few weeks later. The MC SF i'd compare to the church scene from "The Kingsmen"; everyone was trudging dejected towards the station, then someone in one of the houses not far from the ground opened an upstairs window and gobbed off, setting in motion an incredibly violent sequence of events. The bin story may actually have an element of truth, someone I went to school with nicked a Naaridge scarf, got chased and knocked over some of the old style metal bins as obstacles for those chasing him. (Circa 83, FA Cup game!)

“The Tractor Boys” on 20:21 - Feb 1 with 2089 views | jacobnikons | I prefer it to the rather bland 'Super Blues' which is rather rubbish, aren't all those who wear blue 'super' in their supporter eyes?? I do prefer Singing the Blues than that godawful Hey Jude and wish Foster would play that again at home games.

“The Tractor Boys” on 14:16 - Feb 1 by J2BLUE | I've never used it but it really doesn't bother me. I don't really call any team by their nickname. Does any fan actually do this? "Did you see the Red Devils versus the Toffees last night?". No. Just no. |
This. I’ve lived in various parts of the country and other than Birmingham City (always “Blues”, never “the Blues”) and Portsmouth I can’t recall anyone referring to their team by their nickname, unless it’s “United” or “City” etc. I’m sure there are more than those two but in general most nicknames seem to exist for media purposes.

It sets us apart and everyone knows where we are. Blues is just too widely used by others. Ipswich is ok for most chanting but Tractor Boys adds a bit of humour, much better than Canaries!

“The Tractor Boys” on 16:57 - Feb 1 by Coastalblue | No it's because there was an episode of Lovejoy where a bin man found and wore an ITFC cap. Warren Clarke iirc. [Post edited 1 Feb 2023 16:59]

This is right. The episode was called ‘Bin Divers’ and the great Warren Clarke played a binman called Brian Nunn who also used to enjoy fine cooking like soufflé’s in his spare time amongst all the good stuff he’d rescued. I think he called it ‘scratching’ and of course it was the preserve of the binmen themselves. Tractor Boys? I’ve always thought it quite amusing/ok. Not a term I’d use. [Post edited 2 Feb 2023 12:21]

“The Tractor Boys” on 12:34 - Feb 2 with 1843 views | BiGDonnie | I often find it's a reply from someone after you've told em you're a Town fan, it normally sounds something like... "Tractor boys yeah? You still in the championship?" Normally a big 6 supporter who's never been to a game in his life.

“The Tractor Boys” on 12:52 - Feb 2 with 1832 views | The_Flashing_Smile | Anyone getting upset by their football club's nickname needs to have a word with themselves. Tractor Boys is great, self deprecating, developed naturally rather than created by marketing, and unique. There's also nothing wrong with tractors so I don't see why people see it as a slight anyway. I've described myself to new people as both 'Ipswich" and "A Tractor Boy".

“The Tractor Boys” on 13:44 - Feb 2 with 1808 views | Stu_Magoo | Tractor Boys is usually used by friends of mine who think they are handing a sly dig by saying it. In almost all cases, they're plastic fans who think they support a Premier League club because they pay Sky 100 quid a month to sometimes get to watch them on the telly. The irony being I don't mind us being called The Tractor Boys one bit. It's a nickname which is individually ours.

“The Tractor Boys” on 11:48 - Feb 4 with 1222 views | patrickswell | I've joined in on the "1-0 to the Tractor Boys" chant at games and felt no shame about it. I've listened to opposition fans sing "No noise from the Tractor Boys" when we've been losing games, which proves as someone stated earlier that it cut through more widely. Why does this matter? Because I'm struggling to think of any other club which either uses a similar soubriquet or has it used against them in games like we do.
