List of big clubs 13:16 - Apr 8 with 7140 viewsChurchman

Somebody on Owlstalk has posted the following under the title of ‘What makes a big club’. One persons categorisation was as follows:

Elite group

Liverpool
Man United
Spurs
Everton

Massive clubs

Arsenal
Man City
Villa
Wednesday
Newcastle
Leeds

Decent sized clubs

Chelsea
Sunderland
Wolves
Forest
Shef Utd
Norwich
West Ham

Medium sized clubs

Derby
Leicester
Birmingham
Bradford
Portsmouth
Ipswich
Crystal Palace

Aside from the fact of who cares, I think this says an awful lot about some Wednesday supporters’ attitude and entitlement. If they think they’re in the same bracket as Arsenal, Man City, Newcastle and Leeds, they need to lay off the booze. Sunderland have a much bigger following and more illustrious history too.

Newcastle are bigger than spurs without a doubt.

And there’s no way that we are bigger than West Ham or sunderland. No chance

Newcastle haven’t won a major domestic trophy since the 50s so it’s difficult to place them above Spurs.

What an over-reaction based on 1 persons post (according to OP?). What if owls fans took Frimmers posts as being the barometer of town fans views?

Weird after such a good run that this is the your current hot-take worthy of a thread!?!

Overreaction? I think it’s just people making a comment and having their opinion on the original post

I'm not sure why people have a problem with this. Statistically speaking Everton are a big club, very big, bigger than Manchester United

What have Sheffield Wednesday ever won?

On a purely subjective, what have they won and how big is their fanbase? Are they any bigger than Sheff United?

I can't recall either winning anything but did feel Wednesday were traditionally the bigger cub living in the other's shadow.

Forget Wednesday - how can anyone put Everton in the elite group over Man City? Everton haven’t been elite for about 100 years!

And Bradford a medium sized club alongside us and Derby! Hahaha

Everton have won the F.A.Cup twice, since the war. 1966 and 1984.
For the avoidance of doubt I'm not suggesting Everton are an elite club.

Everton also won the FA Cup in 1995

Spurs have won 26 trophies, Newcastle have won 14. Their support base is similar. Spurs have had significantly more European success. There is no doubt Spurs are a bigger club

After typing it all out, I was tempted to creat a new group of notable overachievers which would be:
Wolves
Blackburn
Sunderland
Sheff Wed
West Ham (European success, despite no league win)
Ipswich

But hey, I said it was nonsense, and choose the categories then the teams.

I'd add Leicester to the over-achievers, though I love that they did win the Prem - shows the rest of the outsiders like us that it can be done.

Leicester have earned their way into that list

We should have won more at our peak really, I suspect we would have won a few more things if we were professional earlier, there's a lot of trophies earned by some of the medium clubs when a lot of clubs became professional after World War 1

Wednesday are a bit like Preston, Bolton, Huddersfield, in that they have a lot of major trophies in their cabinet (4 league titles, 3 FA Cups) but their heyday is pre-WW2, so the last of those is 1935.

What category that puts them in historically is a matter of perspective really (same for us really, given that it's now 42 years since our last one!).

I'd have us on par with the likes of Forest, Sheffield United and perhaps even Wolves really, I know they had a good phase in the 50's was it but in the modern era, they have been fairly similar to us in terms of ballsing up the playoffs fairly regularly

Wolves definitely. We're much smaller than Forest though for me.

I know it's all based on feeling and depends on your age, but during my lifetime us and and Forest have trod very similar paths, and yet their name and status carries a lot more weight than ours.

Forest are a funny one, they had a little flurry under Clough where they were good for 3 or 4 seasons and won a lot but probably haven't actually been overly successful outside that?

We have under performed in the League Cup really which Forest have won 4 times which bumps up their haul up, the more minor of the major trophies

They've won the European Cup twice which was considered easier to win than the UEFA Cup at the time

Had we have actually won the league under Bobby Robson, we'd have had a better chance of winning more European trophies, truth be told

We've probably under performed in the FA Cup too, being knocked out unjustly really to West Ham in the semi in 75 and battered Man City in the other semi but failed to convert in the early 80's?

Forest overperformed at their peak, we under performed I'd suggest and that's why we don't have more trophies

I suspect we were consistently in Europe more regularly in Europe under Robson than Forest were for example?

I was careful to say one person’s take. Others on Owlstalk have a different view. However having read their thread, I sensed a lot of Wednesday’s fans have a somewhat misplaced sense of who they are. Just a view.

Besides, I thought it was an interesting thread worthy of discussion, not least because it encouraged me to think about where my club was in the great scheme of things.

So, Everton, who have won the top tier 4 times since the war, the F.A. Cup never and have one European trophy are “elite”, while Arsenal who have won the league 8 times since the war and the F.A. Cup 14 times are merely "massive". I was tempted to read on for comedy value, but then noticing that Man City are not yet elite (has anyone told Pep?) I decided to cut my nails instead

POSTERS on cup stat: correction duly revised to Everton won cup 5 times. To any elite Evertonian : humble apologies.

More like 1930’s
Wednesday won 4 league titles and 3 fa cups between 1896 and 1935.
Since then they’ve won the league cup once.

To be fair Hillsborough used to be a go-to destination for cup semi finals so there is some merit In them being a biggish club - certainly ‘bigger’ than Sunderland who have been utterly useless for nigh on sixty years

Actually, Everton's claim to be in the elite could well be based on the fact that they have appeared in the top division more times than any other team. Admittedly, they have had little success in recent years, but we shouldn't let the enormous wealth of some clubs in recent years override a longer-term view.
