Dismissing the opinions of people who have played football at a high level because they are women. I doubt he would have said anything if there had been a male pundit who had never played for England.

That's nonsense, you're telling me if McKenna gets an invite to be a pundit or part of a commentary team (which could end up becoming reality in the near future) you wouldn't respect his opinion compared to someone who had played in the competition or against the best.
Much as the best managers don't have to have experience being a top player, that also counts for commentary. The best pundits/commentators are the ones who offer engagement be that through personality, knowledge or experience. |

I see in the Guardian the headline is that he has been told to keep his opinion to himself. That's where the danger starts.
I think he's wrong. I really don't think you need to have played at the level you are commentating on to have a valid opinion. It's similar to top managers never having played at a high level. But that discussion needs to be had and that's why free speech is so important. And if right-wing culture war fighters agree, that's tough. Hitler was a no-smoking campaigner. |  |

He is allowed an opinion. His comments in isolation may seem out dated or wrong to some people but looking deeper into it I agree, I think it’s about qualifications. There are a lot of men who do punditry / commentate on England who I don’t think qualify either because they haven’t regular performed at world level or had failed careers.
Women’s football has came on leaps and bounder over the past 10 years in particular, but the level technically and tactically at the elite level or women’s football is still some way off the mens. That doesn’t mean women can’t have an opinion or it’s wrong for them too, but from an entertainment perspective I would prefer to listen to someone who has played at the level they are commentating or giving pundtitry on. |
Just having played at a high level doesn't necessarily make someone a good analyst or commentator of the game [Post edited 6 Oct 2023 23:33]

It seems to be because he doesn’t value them or their thoughts. He thinks female footballers don’t have anything to contribute to discussions around men’s football.

What those stories didn’t address was:
A) ratings began falling under the previous host

Jonathon Pearce did years of hard graft commentating in the lower leagues and on radio as well as regional tv. His knowledge of the mens game is second to none... Of all the male commentators/pundits you could have singled out...JP is a poor choice.. Hes an encyclopedia of football. With decades of experience in the media. |  | | |

But to me if you've won a champions league final. I'd take more notice of you and your take on how the occasion felt, what it was like etc and your thoughts over someone who's never played in the competition.

KK criticised women commentators because they'd never played in mens' pro football, even if they were experienced England internationals in the womens' game.
JP has never played pro football at any level - he broke his leg at 14 & that put a stop to any potential future he might have had as a pro player - read the Wiki link I posted.
