Dismissing the opinions of people who have played football at a high level because they are women. I doubt he would have said anything if there had been a male pundit who had never played for England. I'm not someone who finds offence around every corner like some but I just find his comment odd to be honest.

Kevin Keegan getting cancelled on 15:31 - Oct 6 by tonybied | That's nonsense, you're telling me if McKenna gets an invite to be a pundit or part of a commentary team (which could end up becoming reality in the near future) you wouldn't respect his opinion compared to someone who had played in the competition or against the best. Much as the best managers don't have to have experience being a top player, that also counts for commentary. The best pundits/commentators are the ones who offer engagement be that through personality, knowledge or experience. |
If the question is " what does it feel like to play in a championsleague final?" I would take the thoughts from the person who experienced over someone who hasn't but imagines what it would be like.

Not like you to over exaggerate something Grizzers. Of course it's nothing like the Keys/Gray incident. Keegan hasn't talked about "Hanging out the back of it" or "smashing it". He's an old man who is expressing outdated views that are incorrect. H's yesterday's man. [Post edited 6 Oct 2023 18:53]

Kevin Keegan getting cancelled on 18:19 - Oct 6 with 3446 views | Trequartista | I see in the Guardian the headline is that he has been told to keep his opinion to himself. That's where the danger starts. I think he's wrong. I really don't think you need to have played at the level you are commentating on to have a valid opinion. It's similar to top managers never having played at a high level. But that discussion needs to be had and that's why free speech is so important. And if right-wing culture war fighters agree, that's tough. Hitler was a no-smoking campaigner.

ditto. loads on here who have never played at top level have told mangers what team to play, x player is useless etc. so everyone can comment you don't need to have a direct experience

Is it a discussion that 'needs to be had'? I think that's over egging it. And nobody has stopped him expressing his view.

Kevin Keegan getting cancelled on 14:24 - Oct 6 by JackNorthStand | He is allowed an opinion. His comments in isolation may seem out dated or wrong to some people but looking deeper into it I agree, I think it’s about qualifications. There are a lot of men who do punditry / commentate on England who I don’t think qualify either because they haven’t regular performed at world level or had failed careers. Women’s football has came on leaps and bounder over the past 10 years in particular, but the level technically and tactically at the elite level or women’s football is still some way off the mens. That doesn’t mean women can’t have an opinion or it’s wrong for them too, but from an entertainment perspective I would prefer to listen to someone who has played at the level they are commentating or giving pundtitry on. |
Just having played at a high level doesn't necessarily make someone a good analyst or commentator of the game [Post edited 6 Oct 2023 23:33]

Kevin Keegan getting cancelled on 13:22 - Oct 6 by Swansea_Blue | It seems to be because he doesn’t value them or their thoughts. He thinks female footballers don’t have anything to contribute to discussions around men’s football. “But if I see an England lady footballer saying about England against Scotland at Wembley and she’s saying, ‘If I would have been in that position I would have done this,’ I don’t think it’s quite the same. I don’t think it crosses over that much.” https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/joey-barton-kevin-keegan-england-wo As if he’s some revered oracle lol |
Haha, Keegan the "expert" who can't himself even get the terminology right - "lady footballer" fgs. As for commentators who've never played the mens' game - has he ever tried listening to Jonathan Pearce ... 😱 Strange he doesn't address the same criticism at him ... (Fwiw, JP triggers a lunge for the off-switch every time for me, I'd rather listen to any of the women any day). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Pearce_(commentator) [Post edited 7 Oct 2023 4:28]

When the recent news stories about Football Focus’ ratings was in the headlines I saw some people claim it was due to Alex Scott had taken over and she didn’t understand the men’s game. What those stories didn’t address was: A) ratings began falling under the previous host B) that previous host was Dan Walker, whose only experience of professional football was watching it on the sofa like the rest of us.

Jonathon Pearce did years of hard graft commentating in the lower leagues and on radio as well as regional tv. His knowledge of the mens game is second to none... Of all the male commentators/pundits you could have singled out...JP is a poor choice.. Hes an encyclopedia of football. With decades of experience in the media.

I'd take more notice of you and your take on how the occasion felt, what it was like etc and your thoughts over someone who's never played in the competition. Or if you've played against messi I'd take your view on how to stop him over someone who hasn't. |

You completely missed the point. KK criticised women commentators because they'd never played in mens' pro football, even if they were experienced England internationals in the womens' game. JP has never played pro football at any level - he broke his leg at 14 & that put a stop to any potential future he might have had as a pro player - read the Wiki link I posted. What's sauce for the "geese" should have been sauce for the "gander" in Keegan's criticisms.

It's an old man not quite up with the times, but equally he's not hurting anyone with his silly old-fashioned view. It's just our daily dose of what we should have an opinion on/get annoyed about. Whoever invented social media should be cancelled. I couldn't care less who's commentating either. All this guff about who's more knowledgeable - how much knowledge do they impart anyway? It's mostly just telling us what we've just seen, with a few forgettable facts thrown in to fill air when nothing much is happening. 'Whoever invented social media should be cancelled.' I think that for a few of us on here that was one Phil Ham in 1995 (?)... It was when we left the dial up modem technology that everything started to go wrong.

Although commentators and pundits aren't the same thing. I completely disagree with Keegan but it's common for commentators and presenters to be media folk rather than ex-pros, pundits are usually those with experience of playing the game and I believe that's what Keegan was (wrongly) taking aim at.

I don't disagree with your comments there If Keegan was going to make such criticisms, they should have been aimed equally at all who fall into the category he created, was my point. [Post edited 7 Oct 2023 10:41]
