It certainly hasn't been up to now, but with Labour moving to the right, and the probability of the Tories being led by someone like Badenoch or even Farage and moving even more to the right, it is perhaps difficult to see the Tory Party as their natural home.

I suppose it depends how many One Nation Tories survive the election, and how many are prepared to stay and fight, but I certainly tend to think that people like David Gauke and Rory Stewart would feel more a home in the Labour Party than the Tory Party.

Labour has moved to the centre, but it's the centre left.

If we were more like our European neighbours then out two monolithic parties would no longer exist. We'd have the Greens, a Corbynite left wing party, a centre left party with the likes of Starmer and Streeting, a centre right party for the one nation Tories you've mentioned and a populist right wing party with the ERG Tories and the UKippers.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

I am not sure I would regard Labour as centre-left anymore, but obviously such a view depends on one's perspective.

For my own part, I would prefer a non-Corbynite left wing party, but something along the lines you suggest would be good, with the Lib Dems occupying the middle point.

I think the lib dems would peel off to the greens, the left, the centre left and the centre right parties.

I've always found him charmless, so have never really understood his personal appeal. It is also strange to me how he has cut through to people with nothing in common with an alumnus of Dulwich College.

Scary thought that we maybe veering into the possibly realms of the far right taking over as opposition. I know that there was a spell around Europe of far right politicians getting into power but I didn't think it would happen here.

He seems to have found a space to squeeze into but only because the Tories absolutely pooped the bed. It does make this election more spicy but I hope it just goes tits up for them.

Just googled my Reform candidate in my area ..... I wish I hadn't as I just vomited over my desk. He looks a bit of a kiddy fiddler but I bet people round my way still vote for him.

Even with Farage, he needs to overturn a 24,000+ majority.

And even then there will likely be zero Reform MPs elsewhere.

They won’t be the official opposition and he’ll resign within 2 years. And I maintain he doesn’t want to win, just run close and claim foul play. Too much scrutiny and restrictions.

Farage is quite a clever populist, but if you are already against his views before you listen to him speak, you are unlikely to fall for his charms.

Do you think he always intended to stand?

But why did he say he wasn’t standing 10 days ago…?

Some sort of tactic?

Kemi Badenoch was so bad on her media round today, considering she's supposed to be the next big thing and has been very focussed on the gender debate she just couldn't even square her own argument up about it.

He'll win that seat easily.

I presume he's picked it because UKIP won there a few years ago.

The Tory incumbent, Douglas Carswell, defected to UKIP in 2014 and resigned as an MP. He won in the resulting by-election then held the seat for UKIP in 2015 GE. I think (without checking) that it is the only seat UKIP/Reform has held.

Why shouldn't their voters have representation though if that is who people are voting for?

They should, that's why I am in favour on balance, as it is represents a purer democracy - 10% polling = 10% representation.

I just made the point because on a thread with lots of hostile comments for Reform, I wondered if people knew the consequences of what they were advocating with PR. If so, fair enough.

Not correct to say that "power rests anywhere it is with minority extreme parties". The current Dutch government coalition is made up of four of the six of the largest parties. The previous two consisted of three of the four largest parties and one of the smaller centrist parties, and the one before that was the two largest parties governing together. The small, extremist parties almost never get involved in Dutch governments.

The largest party in the Netherlands currently is an extreme right-wing populist party.

People should be rejoicing that he's standing for Reform. This will further split the tory vote with many disaffected tory voters getting behind Reform. As Laura Kuennsberg said yesterday, they wont come out and say it but Labour will be delighted Nigel Farage has stepped up.

Absolutely. There are no longer any custodians of the Tory party. If there were we wouldn't have seen the debacle of the past 5 years.

The Tories will lose, and lose heavily. The right will claim that they lost because the party wasn't right enough and lurch even further to the right. Farage will be welcomed back into the fold and by 2029 the Tories will be like the Sweden Democrats and other European nationalist right wing parties.

with labour and the corbyn entryism the saving grace was that it came before any real shift in the parliamentary party. there was therefore a powerful rearguard to drag it back from oblivion. i fear in the tory party it is the other way around and, certainly after the coming election, the parliamentary party is already lost to the loons. it's now a take over much more like the us republicans than labour's brief corbynite uprising.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

15 parties. A bit extreme.

We, of course, are far more restrained and have a mere 13 different parties currently represented in the HoC.
