Loudest cheer in the commons is for the cut in draught duty… on 14:51 - Oct 30 by Ryorry | I love my beer, but (sorry to be controversial) this seems absolutely nonsensical to me - far from supporting the NHS, isn't it just going to result in increased drinking & therefore eventually even further strain on it? |
Can’t see that a penny off a pint is going to suddenly result in everyone having an extra five or six pints on a weekend..

Loudest cheer in the commons is for the cut in draught duty… on 15:00 - Oct 30 by Blueschev | It's not ridiculous though is it? Go to nearly any town or city in this country and they all have the same crappy chain pubs / cafes / bars / shops. |
But all of the towns and cities I visit also have independent cafés which are always better than the Costas and MacDonalds of this World. Especially if you like a decent flat white. And you need a proper pub to be in with a chance of beer out of a cask usually.

We don't here in Cry Pal, very few chains actually. Plenty of places have plenty of chains of course, but this has been going on decades, nothing to do with this budget.

The issues faced by the High Street are more to do with changing habits than anything. As a country, shopping is no loner the past time it once was - you simply aren't going to get the footfall on the high street there once was.

I didn't suggest otherwise. Wait until you local restaurant closes down and a chain starts charging you £125 for bangers and mash, rather than your usual ninety quid.

Working from home is also a big thing. It sounds harsh but independent cafes etc will need to adapt or stop trading. The new flexible working regulations are not going to help footfall.

Indeed. On a related note - people complain about the declining high streets but I've had 4 or 5 instances over the last year or so where I wanted something... and couldn't even find it on the high street. I had to go online. Too much of the high street is full of cheap cr@p, no wonder people are going elsewhere.

My mistake, I thought this was a thread about the budget rather than a general moan about the high street. We don't have chain restaurants here. Don't even have a Boots, Superdrug, McDonalds or a Wetherspoons. And the local restaurants, from what I can see, seem to be thriving. I think I'll be fine on the decent food front, thanks.

"The key to the Chancellor’s UK budget presentation is the reaction of the gilts. A significant decline in 10-year yield demonstrates that the budget passes the 'Truss test', indicating the market, at the very least, sees the plan as reasonable." - LOU BRIEN, MARKET STRATEGIST, DRW TRADING "At this stage, massive tax rises have not spooked financial markets, and instead expectations that the budget deficit will shrink is having a mollifying effect on UK bonds." - KATHLEEN BROOKS, RESEARCH DIRECTOR, XTB Changes to Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax, including business relief, will provide respite to investors and AIM listed companies will breathe a sigh of relief. At the macro level, the Office for Budget Responsibility’s growth forecasts are much higher than the Bank of England’s. You need to read what was written. Hospitality hasn't fully recovered from Covid (4 years ago) and this budget will cause extra financial burdens on an industry that is already struggling.

TBH it's not really anything to do with any government Life changed for the high street, the first moment supermarkets started stocking everything from TV's to Glasses' to clothes, to food, and then Amazon and the internet came into popularity. I don't think there's anything any Government can do to bring high streets back to what they were as they just won't be used, there's no need for it. The internet was the best and worst thing to happen to the world imo

That's not what you said. You said, "far from supporting the NHS, isn't it just going to result in increased drinking & therefore eventually even further strain on it?' That's rather more than just "the wrong message". All I saw the 1p off a pint as was something to cheer, in these gloomy times, for ordinary people. I don't think it's going to make a huge amount of difference to drinking habits or the health of the nation.

Wasn't the point to try and reduce drinking habits rather than keep them the same? A reduction itsn't going to increase it, but it's also not exactly gonna put people off either.

The rise in national minimum wage will more than offset a tax cut on booze. If people are waiting for costs of any consumer product to come down from these levels they'll be disappointed.

No need to be condescending. I read what was written. "From 2026-27 permanently lower tax rates for retail, hospitality and leisure properties would be introduced. Shops, cafes and pubs in England also got a reprieve from a jump in business rates next year with Reeves extending a relief scheme introduced during the COVID pandemic. She announced 40% relief for eligible retail, hospitality and leisure businesses..." https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uks-reeves-extends-englands-business-rates-reli

I don't think a few pence on or off a pint is going to make much difference, only education will do that. If they'd whacked up the price in order to discourage drinking there would be uproar.

I think that’s why they’ve limited it to draught. I think a lot of evidence points to drinking in a pub environment as opposed to at home is a lot healthier. The government could maybe have gone further and taxed supermarkets be evenly with pubs etc. It’s pointless worrying about a few p less on a £6 l/7 pint when you can buy a bottle of vodka for about that much in a supermarket.
