Loudest cheer in the commons is for the cut in draught duty… on 15:42 - Oct 30 by FrimleyBlue | Wasn't the point to try and reduce drinking habits rather than keep them the same? A reduction itsn't going to increase it, but it's also not exactly gonna put people off either. |
I didn't put it well, you did it better 👍 I think it's human nature to react to today's cut by having an extra pint, not because of the money but because of the message. May be a temporary reaction. And whilst It won't save individual drinkers any worthwhile money, it will be an unnecessary net loss to the treasury.,hence I think it's a nonsensical measure.

Loudest cheer in the commons is for the cut in draught duty… on 16:42 - Oct 30 by catch74 | I think that’s why they’ve limited it to draught. I think a lot of evidence points to drinking in a pub environment as opposed to at home is a lot healthier. The government could maybe have gone further and taxed supermarkets be evenly with pubs etc. It’s pointless worrying about a few p less on a £6 l/7 pint when you can buy a bottle of vodka for about that much in a supermarket. |
Have an up arrow, despite me being a bod who can't afford to drink in pubs like i used to. The price difference on booze bought in shops and pubs ought to be smaller.

A significant decline in 10-year yield demonstrates that the budget passes the 'Truss test', indicating the market, at the very least, sees the plan as reasonable." - LOU BRIEN, MARKET STRATEGIST, DRW TRADING "At this stage, massive tax rises have not spooked financial markets, and instead expectations that the budget deficit will shrink is having a mollifying effect on UK bonds." - KATHLEEN BROOKS, RESEARCH DIRECTOR, XTB Changes to Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax, including business relief, will provide respite to investors and AIM listed companies will breathe a sigh of relief. At the macro level, the Office for Budget Responsibility’s growth forecasts are much higher than the Bank of England’s. Loudest cheer in the commons is for the cut in draught duty… on 14:57 - Oct 30 by _clive_baker_ | Certainly true at my place. We pay above NMW but that will have to go up if we're to maintain that ethos. The last increase to minimum wage contributed an on cost of about £5m annually for us that we had no choice but to pass on to the customer. Not that I disagree with it in principle, as a society we need mechanisms to address the significant wealth inequality in this country and to redistribute it more evenly, but it certainly comes at a cost. |
Did they take a hit on profit margins too?

So surely, the penny off is to soften the blow of the NI and NMW increases for the publicans -whilst providing a cheer for those who don't think too deeply about it. Quite clever really

Very bad move to impose IHT on family farms though - ALL of which are worth £1m+ (agricultural land is currently worth c. £10K/acre). The upshot will be that if farmers want to pass on the family farms to kids/grandkids, those legatees will be forced to sell parcels of land to large corporate farms run as businesses with an eye only on profit, so more monoculture and less care of the environment likely.

Just seen something on twitter predicting a U turn on that bit, as will impact too many small farmers, who are seen more as a community asset than as a business. I'm inclined to agree.

"Having an extra pint" if that's really what people will do, won't impact on the NHS very much. You keep changing your tune every time someone replies! First you said it was nonsensical because it's going to result in increased drinking & a further strain on the NHS... now you've changed it to a nonsensical measure because of "unnecessary net loss to the treasury." You could just admit you dived in a bit quickly on this one without thinking it through! It's a sweetener, essentially, for the hard-of-thinking. Governments have been knocking a penny off booze to appease the masses for donkeys years. That's all it is, a headline grabber to give people a little lift, and they fall for it every time, whoever's in government. It won't make a huge amount of difference to anything in reality.

If the prediction's correct, that'd be great. And the point re small farmers being a community asset is an excellent one. The vast majority of them do invaluable extra work locally, like clearing road ditches, cutting verges, gritting in winter (much of which is no longer done by cost-cutting councils); emergency rescues via tractor etc. Not to mention local farm shops, environmental initiatives; and traditional mixed farming just being generally better for the environment

I simply added a point later (which admittedly I should have included in the first post, but was in a rush) to go out. And yes of course it was a 'sweetener', which everyone was bound to see through. Basically, I'm not hugely impressed with this budget.

Loudest cheer in the commons is for the cut in draught duty… on 14:30 - Oct 30 by The_Flashing_Smile | You can't take things in isolation (I appreciate you will as you own a cafe) because the full budget is intended to grow the economy... and a growing economy will mean more people in local pubs, cafes and restaurants, regardless of a penny off the pint. Saying chains like Wetherspoons and Costa Coffee will be all we're left with is ridiculous doom-mongering. |
lets just wait and see then, Ive already been told by one landlord the budget has just put about 50,000 pounds worth of extra costs on them, and thats before the energy price rises we'll see incoming. wheres that 50k coming from ? it will have to come from prices going up, its going to be about 30-40p per pint extra immediate rise (has to be because it will be suicidal for them to do it in January, at least try and recoup some money to survive now through Christmas) but some people wont pay that amount, so theyll sell less beer, which means prices have to go up further to compensate, or theyll have to reduce the number of staff, and it just spirals down into more and more debt and eventually theyll close up because its just not financially viable and this is why 29 pubs per week close currently, that number will increase. and just so we are clear the 1p duty cut is money the brewers get, because they pay the duty, not the pubs. So the likes of Molson Coors, Heineken, AB Inbev, you know the really "small" companies who made in AB Inbevs case 59billion dollars revenue last year, have just been the 1p, and they wont pass that money on to anyone but their shareholders.
