Warnock is superb on ref watch.

Every week he just cannot believe what he is hearing from Gallagher, who is utterly useless.

Gallagher is a fully paid up member of the refs can do no wrong,

What I find annoying, and it is a handicap to newly promoted sides, is the pallyness between refs and players they have refereed many times. No intentional bias but permits bias nevertheless .

We should prepare a dossier and send it to the referees association.

I've never watched that before, but what's the point of it if Gallagher says he doesn't think it's a penalty on its own merits (putting aside the process). Bloke is a Trumpian post-truth tw@t apologist for a corrupt system if he's standing there saying that's not a penalty and it's a coming together.

Warnock, I think, would have liked to have said more to him but has a job to keep. What a load of bent bollox.

Indeed, was just going to post re the latter. He couldn't have seen the whole incident properly.

I do have *some* sympathy for the ref. Sometimes you can’t see something clearly so can’t give it but the linesman should have seen it, and Atwell ignoring it on VAR is unforgivable.

The reason we have to put up with delayed goal celebrations, toenails being offside, all the rest of that nonsense is supposed to be so stuff like this doesn’t happen.

Its a really poor decision, VAR then failed to do its job, and as Phil shows in the photo below... the ref did not have good line of sight! so he needs to communicate with VAR.

And also the Sky pundit make a really good point that Chaplin had moved the ball onto his left to shoot, before being clattered into. Which is key.

But a final point - 9 times out of 10 when a referee makes a contentious decision, where a home crowd goes crazy vocal and intimidating, the refs next decision nearly always favours the home side, and definitely they typically give BIG decisions with any question marks around them to the home side.

But on this occasion the ref goes completely against that - and gives the yellow for a challenge which easily can be seen as Phillips taking his leg out of the challenge. If we'd stayed at 11 men, I think we win,

Sums up our luck at the moment.

Ref also didn’t give their number 40 a second yellow for waving an imaginary card right in front of his face.

What have we learnt from this VAR incident ? Regardless if whether it's fair, unfair, rigged or a genuine error in referee judgement. And I think Leicester already know how it works. When Leicester get a potential VAR incident against them they go looking for an immediate incident that could swing it the other way i.e. Phillips 50:50 challenge which he pulled out of. So next time that happens to us, nobody risk a 50:50 challenge for a few seconds, maybe kick the ball out of touch, give the referee a reason to pause before something else happens. On the flipside of that, we do the reverse: opposition falls over in our box, one of our players goes over soon after for whatever reason. Sadly this is probably the Premier League way. If you can't beat 'em join 'em.

Indeed, if the Phillips incident hadn't happened maybe more time may have been spent looking at the penalty incident. There was too much going on and Robinson appeared to want to move on to deal with the sending off.

There really might be something in this. If VAR had told him to take a look and the ongield decision was changed to a penalty, the can of worms is even more substantial than rescinding the Phillips 2nd yellow. Fatawu wa, iirc on a yellow himself so the question may have come up as to whether he needed a second yellow himself. A Perfect Storm and all involved bottled it.
Oh, and Dermot Gallagher on Ref Watch, complete apologist for poor refereeing and even worse VAR. Well done Stephen Warnick and Sue Smith(?) - they were incredulous.

Referee will presumably have said he saw the incident and was clear what happened, which he evidently couldn't have been. I do agree that they can't see everything but they certainly shouldn't make decisions on things they can't have seen.

Referee completely screwed up, VAR even more so IMO. Either way it’s one of the worst decisions I can remember and it’s confounded by being made twice!

He was all over the place with his yellow card application. Delap bulldozed through Faes 3 times, no card but two warnings. Szmodics with the worst foul of the game, no card (presumably because it was after 90 seconds). Fatawu takes Clarke's legs from behind in a promising position, no second yellow. Phillips nothing challenge that he pulls out of, second yellow. Hermanson time wasting, no card. Muric time wasting, yellow card.

He had no control of the game from the very start, zero consistency on what counted as a foul - sometimes a shoulder to shoulder challenge was a free kick, other times a proper shove wasn’t etc. You could tell he was going to be crap by the way he blew his whistle at every throw in to demand the taker move half a yard down the touchline - any ref being that particular is sure to be a pompous prat who just wants to be the centre of attention to the detriment of the match.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

From the ref's angle you can't tell how much force the Leicester player ran into Chaplin with, but from that goal line angle you can see he completely wiped Chaplin out.

It seems VAR has bottled it and I'm glad to see the stunned looks on Warnock's face when Gallagher claimed it wasn't a pen as mine probably was the same but I'm biased...

Ondeed. I think this is the flaw with VAR. It's brought in due to the shortcomings of referees but all that happens is another of those referees gets to look at it.

His comments there perfectly sum up the problem - VAR has very evidently got involved in issues this season which aren’t clear and obvious errors. Obviously what constitutes an offence will always be subjective to a degree (which is why VAR was always doomed to fail in the first place) but they seem to make it up every week, every game as to what rules of theirs they’re implementing and how.

Doesn’t help that the refs and PGMOL as a whole are too afraid of scrutiny and accountability so just back themselves at every turn and wang on about what new % of decisions have supposedly been correct which never seems believable.

Yes, he's more worried about the process than getting the right call. The process should be a means of arriving at the right decision. If it doesn't then the process needs to be changed, no defended to the hilt when it isn't working.

He also says the Phillips shouldn't have "had his foot up there" for his second yellow. It was no more than 12 inches off the ground. And I'm not sure the ref was in a great place tfor the pen call and Jack Clarke moves across his eyeline at the exact moment of the incident, so he couldn't have had a"excellent" view.

It's scary to think he was a top level referee and can't spot an obvious penalty.

It is true that Chaplin was moving to his left. Just before the impact he was barely moving forward at all.

The defender had all the momentum. Watch as the defender sees Chaplin move to the left. The defender's left leg goes wide left to enable him to push
to his right (at speed) and hit Chaplin. That is why his left arm hits Chaplin. He has turned into him intentionally (see Ftnfwest above).

Both players fall in the same direction; away from the goal. That is where the force came from.

Thanks Sitters. To be honest, I wish I hadn't seen that cause I'm now even more depressed! I cannot believe that, after being pressed to give an answer, Gallagher said he thought it was not a penalty because it was "a coming together". Well done to Stephen Warnock and the lady (sorry, don't know her name) for not allowing Gallagher to get away with that.

How the hell was Gallagher allowed to referee at top level for so long?

That has set me up for a great Monday!

It's not that he can't spot a penalty at all. If the penalty had been given, I'm 100% certain Gallagher would have agreed it was a penalty. He is just ultra reluctant to question his chums and rubber stamps the 'process'. It's a bit pathetic to see really.
