Hirst out for 6 weeks 23:04 - Nov 17 with 19714 viewsDinnernotTea

According to some virgin on twitter. Said person won't disclose what the injury is but is being smug about it so I guess it's true.

Kieran seemed more concerned about the knee than his head injury post-match.

Why did we leave him on then? We did that with Burns and his injury got worse. Happened on another occasion with a player who I can't recall.

Think more abdominal than stomach and as of a couple of weeks ago it was still being managed.

It's a fair question, but Hirst did finish the game and we won the match which we all agree was vital.

If Hirst had been withdrawn there's every chance we don't win the match.

To be fair, we had a last minute deadline day offer for Lath turned down, so no doubt a Striker will be top of the list come what may.

Not good....

Such a good player but having a real issue staying fit. I though when he went down at Spurs during the game he looked done, was shocked he stayed on.

He’s had just two injuries since he’s been with us. Torn hamstring ( a bad injury)and a knee injury
( same leg? Not sure), where he missed 4 games. Don’t think he’s had any more than that . But hamstring injury will impact on knee control. So possibly linked.

Bloody hell. We can't catch a break this season with injuries.

This is going to be a long six weeks hoping Delap stays fit.

Hirst must sit in Teddy Bishops old spot in the changing room, can’t seem to keep fit for a decent period of time.

Always said not getting in that striker would be our downfall.

That's a real blow, certainly puts some onus on AAH to step up over the next few weeks. I don't see Broadhead as a viable option TBH, and I say that as someone who loves Broady, just don't think stylistically he would be anything close to appropriate for our #9 role. Delap, Szmodics (with Clarke coming in on the left), AAH probably more viable options.

I don't think we've got more injuries than other PL teams, but they do cause us more of a problem.

Unlike most other PL teams, we don't have any U21s outside of our named squad that we can call on.

Until we get Cat 1 academy status and our U21s are playing in PL2 that will remain the case.

Most on the forum knew having only delap and Hirst as prem options wasn't good enough. The last throw of ashtons dice seemed to be a player who hasn't kicked a ball in training for Everton yet.

Said it then and say it now. How out of 100000 football players can't you find a third striker as a prem club.

Think they thought the surgery would sort it but was still an issue as of a couple of weeks ago. This from Kieran prior to the Brentford match.

Al-Hamadi missed out on international duty with Iraq having undergone adductor issue on which he underwent surgery early in the summer.

“Ali missed the international break, had a further injection in his groin area, it’s been a really complicated injury and issue for him,” McKenna, no stranger to injuries in that area during his own playing career, continued.

“Of course, when you have an injury in that area, it isn’t always necessarily one site, it’s a really small margin between what classifies as a hernia, an adductor, a hip flexor, deep abdominal muscle, hip joint, there’s a lot of things in that.

“He’s doing OK, he’s been back training in the last couple of days. We hope now he’ll get a really clear run at it, he has been training but he’s probably not been fully free of pain as he’d like to be, but he’s felt good over these last few days and he’s available for tomorrow, if we need him and he’s hopefully going to get a run now over the next couple of weeks of training well with a clean bill of health, which will make him in a stronger position.”

McKenna: Tuanzebe Out For a Few Months, O'Shea Being Assessed 18th Oct 2024 14:40
Manager Kieran McKenna says Axel Tuanzebe will be out for a few months having undergone hand surgery and that Dara O’Shea will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s home game against Everton due to a back injury, while giving updates on the fitness of Jens Cajuste, Massimo Luongo, Ali Al-Hamadi and Cieran Slicker. 12

We had late bid in for Lath that was knocked back. We don't know what other bids may have been made. Agents of other targets will have known we were still heavily in for Broja and it looks like that went down to the wire.

That late in the window do you end up overpaying for someone who you don't necessarily want ( a 6 out of 10 for what McKenna wants) just to get another body in or do you reset and look at getting.

I'd spend the whole window ensuring we had adequate cover in the important positions. We've a crocked third striker as back up to one who keeps getting injured.

Personally leaving it until final day to put in late bids for lath is desperation and shouldn't have come to that. We had many many months of prep for it.

People will defend it. I get that and yes there's loads of reasons why football transfers are difficult..But if Ashton is gonna get plaudits for talking about officials loudly then its fair to be able to say he fked up and his team by how they failed as a team to set us up correctly for the season. You can't applaud him and not be able to be critical too.

We didn't find out about the Broja foot injury until quite late though and presumably were happy with how he'd recovered from the ACL. It's difficult to suddenly turn deals on.

There's a big shortage of 9s and even fewer who fit the profile of what McKenna wanted. We'd landed Delap relatively early and Broja looked like it would happen and we wanted him. Should we have gone earlier on a striker who was a worse fit for the profile than Broja?

How many footballers of your 100,000 play as a striker capable of playing in the Premier League for a fee that we are prepared and can afford to pay, meet FFP, that are what McKenna wants as part of his squad, who want to be here and were available last summer or indeed 6 weeks time? Not 100,000.

Ashton, McKenna and co have made mistakes. They’ve admitted that and I suspect that includes transfer dealings. Let’s face it, the only people who don’t make mistakes are people that don’t do anything. But it’s only fair to set that against what they’ve got right - a considerable amount. Some of it, for example some signings I thought were mystifying, are turning out fine.

It should not be forgotten how far the club has come in such a short time. Not everything is going to be right and it isn’t. Patience is the key. We are what we are, where we are which is far further along that even the most optimistic could have guessed.

For the record, a player I’d have liked us to have retained was Kieffer Moore. PL quality? Not really, but the existing players knew where he was and he fitted seamlessly last January. If he’d been prepared to be a squad player, he might have been valuable to us now. Gift of hindsight.

Exactly why I said out of 100000 players.

It's not for fans to say how many available or who they are or we should have got. That's not our job and Ashton and his team a extremely highly paid to do that role.

I don't think it's unfair to say they fked up. Hopefully KM will use his managerial talents to find a way of making things work once delap goes off. But it's a sht time to have a hirst injury with some big games coming up.

This isn't a dig but a genuine question. If you could have got someone in the door earlier who was a 7 out of 10 for the profile of what we were looking for it rather than hold on and get someone in who was a 9 out of 10 which might not happen?

With hindsight we know the (possibly) 9 out of 10 didn't happen but with the information available to the club at the time it seemed like we'd get it over the line.

With KMs talents at devlopong players I'd have imagined the 7/10 being brought in. Al hamadi going out on loan and continuing to get that 9 out of 10 if we could get him.

A 7/10 could give us more than al hamadi can who's not just injured but take the injury away and he's still nothing like our other two strikers anyway so wouldn't be a great sub anyway.

Appreciate hindsight and all that and apologies for being vocal about this. But it's just so frustrating when you sit and see an issue and it's not resolved and then down the line you see that issue pop up in a horrid way when it could have been avoided.
