I'm not sure who we could have got in (that wanted to come here) that would have been good enough.
Broja was evidently too big a risk, Ioannidis wasn't interested in the move. Middlesbrough wouldn't part with Lathe.
A shrewd loan or purchase in January is looking rather necessary.

I don't think the plan was ever for Delap to be our main man, as it happens he has done really well but he desperately needs some support
I like Ali Al-Hamadi and he may come good but that may take a season or two

Really getting fed up with comments like this on the striker situation. You cannot tell me there wasn't a player in western Europe capable of offering more than Al-Hamadi who'd have jumped at the chance to play in the Premier League.
I could reel off 7-8 names without even having to do any research who'd have been available for £10m-£15m, half of what we were panic-bidding for Latte-Lath on deadline day.
We knew Hirst was brittle/injury-prone, Al-Hamadi's only proven at L2 level and Delap was wholly unproven (and still green in various aspects despite his bright start to the season). Pretty criminal not to get a third senior striker in. | | | |

Said on a different thread, I feel like this one one of many sliding doors moments. You could reasonably point to;
- Not getting Philogene in
- Unable to secure another striker
- Injuries (starting to feel there's too many of them for it to be bad luck - Hirst injury in particular has really hurt us - can't win games at this intense level with league one players on the bench)
- Some abject refereeing decisions
- Plenty of individual errors at both ends of the pitch (Clarke miss v Everton, Muric at Brentford spring to mind)
If we end up going down it wont be because we couldn't compete or KM not up to it. I think it will be down to those issues we've fallen the wrong side of by the finest of margins. | | | |

It’s been one of Ashton’s few failings since being here. Two seasons ago we spent all summer chasing Hirst, didn’t get him and bought Ahadme on the last day of the window. Last year we didn’t get our main target and ended up bringing in Scarlett at the last minute. This summer we put all our eggs in the Borja basket and had no plan B when that fell through. It’s bizarre that we thought we could go into this season with one fit striker, one long term injury and a player we bought from League 2 in January.
Even if we had got in a Kiefer Moore type loan singing as a squad option, it would have been better than where we are now. [Post edited 4 Dec 2024 11:47]

He’d have got a championship loan to maximise any selling fee we could get. I honestly doubt if he’ll do anything at that level though.
