Unpopular opinion: Season Ticket Holders have it too good .... 16:27 - Dec 9 with 12437 views | DarkBrandon | ... and the number of them means we are probably preventing thousands of more casual supporters coming along and enjoying the ride (and then becoming more active supporters of tomorrow). Season ticket holders have: * Their pick of the seat * Every home game * With their mates * Priority on away tickets [Edit - apparently this isn't a thing] * Get to resale the games they can't make * All for a discount Casual supporters have to * Pay for a membership * Scramble for the few remaining tickets, many of which are restricted view * And pay a premium for each ticket. Whilst many STHs have been attending games for many years, plenty haven't been, and I think the balance has moved too far. I'd propose that each season ticket should entitle you to entry to 18 of the 19 home league games. Different STHs would miss different games (possibly decided randomly, possibly on a block-by-block basis) and this would free up ~1000 extra seats each game which could be balloted amongst all the people locked out of regular games. I'm aware mightily p.ssing off your most loyal customers isn't recommended in most business textbooks I'm also aware we might well go down, KM leave and we'll return to more normal levels of demand without the need for any of this. There was a time when the discount was lower than it is now, I can recall seasons where if you missed two games there was no financial incentive in having a season ticket. There is currently a move towards Premier League clubs doing away with concessions for senior citizens & younger fans simply because they can fill stadia without the need to offer concessions. I would rather see the discount on season tickets halved, especially now the club offer resale, rather than pushing up the price to selected age groups. Looking ahead there is a good case to be put forward to increase the size of the family enclosure, it used to include three blocks in the upper tier of West stand. Presumably season ticket holder in family areas are allowed to remain in their current seat after they are no longer technically eligible to be thst area. This is blocking new season ticket sales in family areas. The price of success.

Unpopular opinion: Season Ticket Holders have it too good .... on 16:44 - Dec 9 by Swansea_Blue | It sounds like the best solution would be a cull I think it's fair that ST holders get a lot of extra benefits, as they're the guaranteed crowd/income for the season ahead when times aren't so good. And if someone only recently got a ST when they were easy to get, the vast majority of those would have been joining only on the possibility of us getting into the PL. I don't begrudge them lucking out and getting PL football. It is what it is. It's too late to get miffed about ST holders and/or waiting lists once we've hit the PL imo. It's always been like this and yes you're right that demand will fall off if/when we go down. |
There’s a natural cull anyway when people move away or become to infirm to go or pass away. The benefits of a ST are guaranteed seat and a reduction in cost if you go to games or as now resell your ticket. That’s it. I’ve been an ST holder on and off since 92 and all seat stadia. Not every season in the 90s (work) and not when we were in the L1 years (my dad started becoming unwell after my mum died). In our last season in L1 I bought one of the cheap ones in March 2003 for 2003/4 season because I missed going even though I’d be going on my own. I didn’t care what division we might be in - I just wanted to attend again regardless of when I could. I totally lucked out. Pure and simple. It really isn’t payback for what went before but I did endure all of the McCarthy, Keane, Jewell without missing more than a handful of home games. Looking back, Magilton’s team was ok, as was Royle’s. GB obviously. Pre 92, I loved standing and just rocking up to a game. You cannot go back, but I miss that. In terms of the OP, I get the sentiment. The solution ultimately is a larger ground. Not too large though. I’ve always said 33k. Ashton clearly thinks 40k but in the light of the past few seasons I’d settle for 35k with unrestricted views and better facilities.

What's the evidence that the away fans are 'new fans'? Could be long term fans like you.

Ahh, the holy trinity of Cole Hole (a dreadful pub in the Strand) Skuse, Mugless Douglas and Luke Hyam trying to keep that point a prisoner. Trudging back to the car after, hands deep in pockets, to listen to the Radio Suffolk dimwits followed by the hope McCarthy might say something interesting while we thawed out. I didn’t want a ST in L1, and don’t want one now. I’ve managed to get one single ticket for a home match so far this season, and every game has sold out as far as I’m aware. I’m had a season ticket many years back, but it was never the case that doors were shut on thousands of fans except for the occasional game. As that is the case now, I think the balance changes. I’m not saying I should be able to go to 5 games a season … but we will have loads of fans who won’t be paying £40 on the off-chance of getting a ticket and they have next to no chance. And even if you do pay the £40, you struggle to get in much. [Post edited 9 Dec 2024 18:48]
