Phillips outstanding yesterday on 08:04 - Feb 9 with 4380 views | Zx1988 | He's a tough one to analyse, especially with his major game time of late having come against lower league opposition. To my mind he's suffered a little from not having had an extended run in the team - it can't do him any good being in and out of the team, not even appearing in some games.

Phillips outstanding yesterday on 08:17 - Feb 9 with 4219 views | Blue_Heath | Looked good against Bristol too but not so in the premier league. A firing Phillips would make the biggest difference to our team at the moment as central midfield battle is lost every week.

Yeah, he was nothing special for me. If anything, it was yet another example of him playing with the handbrake on IMO.
Phillips outstanding yesterday on 08:29 - Feb 9 with 4128 views | SaleAway | I was hugely unimpressed with Philips yesterday. Tried to thread passes carefully, which almost instantly got picked off. Seemed to react late to every second ball too.

Much of this is down to many people having already decided what they think of Philips, and can't be objective. Therefore people with a predisposed negative opinion of him pick up on any little misstep, and those viewing him positively overlook these. IMO he did a lot very well yesterday, but also did have a few poor touches/passes. Overall mostly very good, but a couple of moments when he got it wrong, and put us on the back foot - but nothing critical. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not from me. First live game this season so was open minded on all the players. For me the most outstanding things he did were negative. Will have to watch the game back as obviously view points differ.

Phillips outstanding yesterday on 09:44 - Feb 9 with 3525 views | MK1 | Jack Clarke has to start. He needs his confidence to be kept up. Dropping him would be a mistake for me. Phillips was ok, nothing outstanding. I would start him , Cajuste and Morsy in there, with Cajuste just in a slightly more advanced roll.

Phillips outstanding yesterday on 09:53 - Feb 9 with 3433 views | Whos_blue | Thought he looked decent too. It's sometimes hard to judge as we were fairly dominant in midfield throughout. Most of what he did he did well. Ball retention was good. Generally in the right place to offer a pass. Looked to get the ball forward. Not sure what else he could do? Someone else mentioned Taylor. I also thought he seemed a little subdued yesterday. I'm presuming it was instructional, as I always like his directness and energy.

Phillips outstanding yesterday on 10:01 - Feb 9 with 3365 views | Garv | I thought he was good if unspectacular. He does the basics well but I don't see him as a risk taker like Morsy is, he's quite safe, although having said that Phillips did give the ball away poorly a couple of times trying to thread passes through to the 10s. Calmness and a bit more passing range is what he'll give us generally, I'm just not sure he's going to really dictate play, demand the ball and increase our tempo like some people are hoping. I did like yesterday when he was having a little go at Szmodics first half for not keeping the ball on the floor after he lobbed a slightly dodgy pass into him. Standards. [Post edited 9 Feb 10:05]

Phillips outstanding yesterday on 10:08 - Feb 9 with 3285 views | OldFart71 | I think you have to analyse what you get for what you pay. In a lot of games Phillips is not in the game. But that applies to our midfield in general against better opposition. I don't know what sort of money Phillips is on and presume we are paying a minimum of 50% of that. I have looked his wages up and it is said they are £150,000 a week, therefore we would if 50% be paying £75,000 a week. No way has he been worth this sort of money.

Some people have this weird way of over exaggerating everything Phillips does. He was fine yesterday,as he should be against lower level. Clarke and Hirst were the 2 that stood out.

There are sections of people desperate to see him fail. When the fake news circulated last year about us sending him back there was a lot of bile aimed at Phillips. He’s not done badly here he’s just not had a run in the team to really judge his value. We should have figured we couldn’t play him and Morsy in the same team before spending that much on a loan, it’s a silly move to have him as cover for Morsy.

Thing is. When he has a solid yet unspectacular game it's him not doing much. Morsy has similar and he's captain marvel. Some of our better performances of the season contained phillips in them. He started 8 of 9 before his suspension which included some of those excellent performances. Yes he passed some balls that didn't come off. But I'd rather see one of our cms trying to get balls to our 10s over walking football up the pitch whilst the opponent gets back into formation. With more games. More of those passes will start finding town players. Imo phillips and cajuste Is the best duo. Its the most mobile too. But I also think all 3 is worth a go too. Is phillips showing 100k worth of talent no. But he didn't join us as a 100k worth of talent player. He joined us as someone who was lost and needs find his love of the game and sort his fitness out and get back to his previous ability.

There isn't a thread about Taylor being outstanding.... that's why Taylor isnt getting any remarks about his performance. There's hardly any remarks about Phillips being cr@p, but many who are just putting the OP straight by saying he's just OK, but not outstanding. I do not understand this lovefest with Phillips. We brought him in so that he could be a standout player and paid over the odds for the privilege.... and we're getting just OK performances. No hate.... no nasty digs.... but he is so not living up to expectations. Think some are doing a Bonnie Tyler and holding out for a hero. Alas, that seems long gone.

I wasn’t he’d on FAWA so not live in person, but thought Philips was steady. When Taylor went off I realised that I didn’t realise he had even been on the field! That can be a good thing, ie, that he was just quietly getting on with his game, or a bad thing, ie, that he wasn’t in the game.

I agree re those you mention. However, I would add Palmer and Burgess to your mentions who stood out as doing well. Woolf and Burgess looked good together.

I think there is a lot of truth in this post. Phillips is (reportedly) on a massive salary here, compared to anybody else in the squad, or even compared to a combination of other players in the squad; he is not worth it & has seriously underperformed when considering the Kalvin Phillips we think of pre-Man City transfer. But none of that should be part of the discussion we're now having here, as to whether he's good enough to be starting in our central midfield for our upcoming Premier League matches. He's contracted to be here until the end of the season, so we'll be paying those extraordinary wages whether he plays or not. The only question should be, is he better, at the level he's currently displaying, with the prospect of further improvement through gametime, than Morsy or any other option currently available to us? Some will say no, and that's perfectly fine as it's subjective & ultimately only McKenna's opinion matters, but for me, I'd have him in there alongside Cajuste, as I think that's our strongest partnership with everyone fit & available.
