Sam Kerr found not guilty of racial aggravated harassment 15:12 - Feb 11 with 36866 viewsJimmy86

It would seem that calling a police officer stupid and white is acceptable in today's society..

Imagine the uproar if that particular slur had been used against someone of BAME origin.. think the sentence and certainly reaction to it would have been different

So you understand that black officers face regular racism from both the public and there colleagues.
Do you think the average white officer faces more racism?
Do you think that the perpetrators of racism towards black officers have faced prison sentences?
If not, have you ever considered starting posts on the unfairness of the system?

No I don't think the average white officer faces more racism than black officers on a daily basis... but racism is racism, regardless of who it's aimed at and is equally abhorrent, surely?

This case was also high profile because of who Kerr is...

In answer to your question about perpetrators of any racist abuse aimed at black officers, then of course people should be charged for that or receive sentences for that too..

Kerr clearly felt like she wasn't being listened to by the officer and mentioned white privilege, which I now understand was why she called him stupid and white.. why did she feel that he wasn't listening to her? She claims because of the colour of her skin.. that's her opinion and the way she perceived the actions of the officer..

Having a discussion is so much nicer than you basically laughing at me and slagging me off, for being miffed that the reaction to it would have been different if she'd have levelled the same slur at a black person, as opposed to a white person..

But I don't think she'd have accused a black officer of showing white privilege though.

Small point of order: In a truly multicultural environment, its perfectly possible for a white person to be in a minority and treated with prejudice or racism. Its also perfectly possible for people of colour to be racist towards each other.

Right but here I’m using the commonly used term as applied to white people claiming racism, not between minoritised people. And yes, it’s theoretically possible but not really in the world we inhabit with its particular history.

Of course she wouldn't... it was also her perception that he was showing white privilege.. nonetheless her perception should still be heard and accepted..

If someone called me stupid and white, I’d probably just say they were a pretty good judge of character.

With respect, I think you're talking about structural or systematic racism and you'd have a point there.

But on an individual level, if someone calls me boy 'Snow White' at a Walthamstow school or holds up a piece of paper next to his face and says he's whiter than that, then what else do you call it? (My kid has albinism).

Or if an Asian father at a kids football match talks to me about how 'black people are all inherently violent', what would you call that?

...These are slurs based on skin colour.

do you think her celebrity privilege and her wealth privilege might also be an issue though? rich pissed up self-important celebrity out on a bender, thinks it's ok to smash property, vomit in someone's cab, abuse the driver and abuse the police. perhaps that's why the reception in the police station was less than tolerant and the police weren't waiting on her every word, rather than her colour?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Apparently though, the treatment and reception she got was perceived as very different to how Mewis (pretty, blonde and white) was treated, despite Mewis being the one who smashed the window...

i haven't watched the video - were they behaving in the same way in the police station? were they both being confrontational mouthy drunks?

There's definitely a big element of entitlement from her, for sure.. if she threw up in the back of the taxi then she should have paid for it, like anyone else has to..

If she had have done then maybe she wouldn't have been taken to the police station by the taxi driver and none of this would have even happened.. thing is, it isn't illegal to be entitled or obnoxious, is it..

it isn't illegal but it does affect how people may respond to you. behaviour may determine the response you get more than colour?
