Hirst > Delap on 17:11 - May 3 by Swansea_Blue | Delap is clearly the better player, but I’m close to the point of thinking Hirst suits us better and I'd rather have him. But, the raw talent in Delap is another level. |

But Hirst in unselfish, more experienced and aware of what's around him etc. Hirst will be great in the champ if he can stay fit. Delap with quality around him can be sensational in the Prem.

Hirst > Delap on 20:06 - May 3 with 1059 views | Simonds92 | Hirst has 5 goal and 2 assists in 664 minutes of football apparently. That's some going. I love George Hirst personally, I think he is the perfect player for us in the way he plays that role. Delap will be a superstar but Hirst is comfortably good enough to be a decent premier league striker. Going in to next season, Hirst would be the top of my list of players to keep hold of.

Hirst had two seasons, and started against easier opposition, to understand the role. Others have said it, but it may be best for Delap long term to stay with us and hone his skills - particularly the full nature of teamwork - at a lower level. [Post edited 3 May 20:40]

Delap played 2 seasons in the Championship on loan from City so he's had time to develop too before going to the PL. I don't think going back there makes much sense with what his aspirations must be. As a couple of others have said it may be Hirst suits our style a tad more than Delap but that just makes him a different type of striker, not necessarily a better one.

He's played in the second tier, but I think another with McKenna, and his tactical approach, would pay him dividends. But he is likely to move on.

Games like yesterday, if you watched as a one off you wouldn’t remotely get the hype over him. He did nothing. That run in the first half where he had 5 Everton players chasing him, with a couple of our players outwide, and he opted to shoot, that summed him up really. Of course he’s a quality player, but for me, what I see is best for the team, Hirst being so much more than an ability to be a bull in a china shop.

Hirst > Delap on 07:50 - May 4 with 662 views | norfsufblue | For me George Hirst has continued to develop and his actual hold up technique is actually improving too , hes learning different ways to win areil battles and probably most important for a Premier League centre forward how to win free kicks.... he hardly ever used to get decisions in his favour but it just feels like he gets more than Delap? Conclusion of this is that as many have stated before in this thread, McKenna is a proven improver in this respect so Liam, ........think twice and thrice before jumping ship!.
Hirst > Delap on 07:51 - May 4 with 660 views | Blue_Heath | Delap will be gone and clearly has a higher ceiling and more wildcard factor but Hirst makes the team play better and has a decent goal record given his lack of starts and injuries. The key question is can we get Hirst, Szmodics, Hutch (if he stays) (Ogbene if not), Clarke and Philogene all firing next season in a functional forward line?
Hirst > Delap on 08:14 - May 4 with 626 views | PMac13 | Delap is obviously a great player and will undoubtedly go on to be elite, however I genuinely think I’d be more disappointed if Hirst were to leave this summer than when almost certainly Delap does. That said I’d be extremely happy if both were in the squad for our the first game of next season!

I think I've said before that Delap is the better individual player but Hirst is better suited for our system. We look more effective when he leads the line. We have to find a way to get a full season out of Hirst next year. Crack that and we will be flying.
Hirst > Delap on 08:56 - May 4 with 565 views | Chrisd | Hirst being that much older has a better all round game and will bring others in with his hold up play. Delap is still raw, strength and hard work is what his game is all about, but he can be naive and not aware of team mates in better positions. Delap is still very much work in progress for me, he needs more coaching to develop his game further. Personally, I’m disappointed that KM hasn’t played them as a front two, I think they’d be perfect foils for each other, think they would complement each other’s game well. However, playing two up front isn’t the modern way sadly.

Thing is, you're mostly basing it on yesterday's game. Chelsea fans, for example, would think Delap's a world beater. Truth is he has a very high ceiling, much higher than Hirst's, but is still a bit raw/inexperienced.

Hirst > Delap on 10:04 - May 4 with 515 views | Tractor_Boy333 | I’ve been thinking this for a few games now. Very early on Delap got the ball and I think Enciso was free on his left Delap ran into the 2-3 Everton defenders and lost the ball. Hirst would have laid the ball off and we could well have been 1-0 up early in the match. Of course Hirst wouldn’t be able to beat those defenders anyway where Delap can but he needs to pick those opportunities more carefully and perhaps when he’s 1-1 not surrounded by numerous defenders. At the moment I can’t help but watch Delap and think he’s only thinking about his move at the end of the season, and this was the case when we had still had a chance to beat the drop. He won’t stay but 100% he would be better to learn and develop further under McKenna.

My reply to Mr Rom was specific to yesterdays game. And of course Delap will go on to big and better things. But for our team, set up etc, Hirst would be my first choice the majority of the time.

Plus our failure, for the third season in a row, to bring in an effective option as third striker. A bit difficult to play two up top when that results in a lack of options on the bench.

In hindsight it was incredibly arrogant and dumb to not secure a third striker in January and leave a squad place open. Lots of people seem to overlook this as they will broil no criticism of Weird Ashton whatsoever.

Nice typo there! The thing that stands out is the struggles we've had in the market every year since Gamechanger took over. It is was even happening under Cook - we went into the season with Bonne and Pigott, with Norwood and Jackson as back ups. Considering the investment elsewhere, with the likes of Edmundson, Morsy, Evans, Burns and Celina coming in, it didn't quite have the same depth or thought about it. Then, in 22/23 we brought in Ladapo and John-Jules over the summer then made the panic signing of Ahadme at the end of the summer window after failing to get Hirst over the line, who finally joined in January. In 23/24, we secured Hirst's permanent signing and made a reach for Scarlett. We then struggled to cover Hirst's absence through injury before managing to bring in Moore and Al-Hamidi in January. Then came the Broja mess of last summer and a lack of success in signing a striker in January, though we did have enough cash to buy Philogene and loan Godfrey. I really hope the narrative changes for 25/26.

Is the lesson here that for some reason Gamechanger can't recruit strikes, even though they can recruit to every other position, or is it that good quality strikers aren't easy to come by? Especially when they are likely coming in to provide cover/competition rather than as the main man? I think it's more likely to be the latter.
