Is there anything in the world worse than grass court tennis? (n/t) on 17:20 - Jul 6 by The_Major

Boxing.

The only sport where you can spend hundreds of pounds for a ticket, and it could all be over in under thirty seconds. Even a thumping at football has to last ninety minutes for example.

The only situation that I can think of that would come close is on a one day cricket match where a team has to score a single run to win, having only taken ten balls to get the other team out.

Cricket can be a con.

First time to Chelmsford as a lad, it rained, rained some more, continued to rain, we went back to school, they played the last half hour or so and we never got a refund.

Not really.
If the BBC are going to allow Wimbledon to dominate the schedules then even a die-hard is going to get sick of it after a week.
Shocking comments to your OP.
Can't believe you got downvotes.
TWTD is dedicated to football but to discover that there are green-stained ball strokers among us makes me want to puke.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

The thing I don't like about tennis (but those who like it do) is that you can't be sure when a game is over.

If someone is 2 sets up and 5-1 up, the last thing I want is a five setter because the opponent turns it round.

The only exception to this would be if I supported a player who was losing, but there are very few I do.

Of course, tennis fans would no doubt regard me as a Philistine.

If you’re fussed about that, I dread to think what it does to you when a cricket match result is decided by the weather!

War, famine, American food, genocide, torture, artificial grass, Tories, Russian window safety, that bit on the A14, infant mortality, heartbreak, the male suicide rate, the property market, NHS waiting lists, religious intolerance, colmans mustard, bad AI social media posts for clicks, KFC chips, social inequality, carpet bombing civilians, cheap toilet paper, white chocolate, people who just shuffle about in your way, pollution, Clarksons farm being held up as some sort of Everyman social commentary and not another way for him to make loads of money based on bullsh1t, the lack of a northern bypass, Elon Musk and Trump arguing like Mean Girls with moobs and substance abuse issues, child poverty, Chinese spyware, Norwich.

I'd rather see 100 bushwhackers coming down the road than 100 british tennis fans. Terrifying people!

That is true. A few years ago, in a 6 a side league, I bravely but foolishly blocked an absolute humdinger with mine. I was left on the floor in the foetal position gasping for breath like a fish out of water whilst 11 blokes plus the ref cracked up.

If you think it's bad now (it's not) you should have watched the 80's and 90's serve volley bore fest. A Rally of 6 shots was deemed exciting and unusual in men's tennis!

I think our first hope was Agassi, a player that could hit returns from 140 mph first serves pretty much just as hard back at the server as they were running into the net. The current player's ability to return a serve is more than another a level above what it used to be, and that's made lawn tennis so much better than it used to be and an enjoyable spectacle.....but then I like golf.

Loved watching Agassi back in the day, but nothing compared to watching McEnroe and Connors growing up.

Said exactly the same when TV commentators were going on about how good the quality was between Norrie & Jarry. Yes it was good, but like the Championship compared with McEnroe & Connors’ Premiership top 4 levels.

Billy Joel

I assume (perhaps wrongly) that this is a humorous reference to Billy Joel's song We Didn't Start The Fire which also contains a list of things.

Harry Truman, Doris Day
Red China, Johnnie Ray
South Pacific
Walter Winchell, Joe DiMaggio
Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon
Studebaker, television
North Korea, South Korea
Marilyn Monroe

[Verse 2]
Rosenbergs, H-Bomb
Sugar Ray, Panmunjom
Brando, The King and I
And The Catcher in the Rye
Eisenhower, vaccine
England's got a new queen
Marciano, Liberace
Santayana goodbye

Yes. Basketball. Unlimited lobbing a beach ball in a hoop by very tall people in ill fitting vests and the home team wins by a point or two. Yawn.

Tennis? I find it boring. Never been my thing, but Mrs C loves it so it’s been on all week. The excruciating bit is they keep panning the camera to the celebs in the Royal Box. Who cares if Charles fffing Manson is there??? Not interested. Just emphasises that it’s a game of privilege. Mostly for chinless gimps like Henman whose daddy had a tennis court and is part of the blazer club.

Much as I enjoy playing it, I can’t watch golf for some reason. I really enjoyed playing rugby too, but find it meh to watch. Though the cars themselves are interesting tech wise, F1 is a total waste of time. Bike racing is exciting though.

Horse racing? Dreadful, either on tv or live. Darts? Zzzzz, though a couple of people I know who went to see it live has a brilliant time 🍺 despite not being interested.

On the upside, love cricket, downhill skiing (in fact most winter sports bar ice skating), baseball, ice hockey, NFL, track and field.

F1.
I know its hard to believe but after a few disasters, amazingly, the fastest two cars finished first & second at Silverstone yesterday. They could have saved fuel as everyone who watches it knows the fastest cars will win

Golf.
Boring and never has been or will be classed as sport.

Darts.
See golf above.

Horse racing.
Its animal cruelty purely continued to make gambling companies rich.

American sports
Every American sport is worse than grass court tennis

Cheap sausages
Bindweed
Littering
Someone that doesn't give you a little wave when you let their car through before you
Never ending works on the Orwell Bridge

Are all above lawn tennis in my list.

The tales of wow I could tell you about bindweed!

Edit...try digging this fecker out!! And the root can grow a meter per year.

'The stems die back in autumn, leaving just the rhizomatous root system underground, ready to produce new shoots in spring.

Established plants have been in their current location for two or three years and so have well-developed root systems able to support strong growth with healthy foliage and flowers.

Established plants generally have a tangled mass of pale roots near the surface, with some longer ones potentially reaching as deep as 4m (13ft).'
