1 year deal.

PL winner
FA Cup winner
Serie A winner
Europa League winner

And to still be playing so many games at PL level and to have kept himself this fit, obviously an incredible pro too.

100%. A standard setter, the sort of player others look at and want to emulate, want to raise their own game and raise the bar in training etc. It takes a mix to build an effective squad, it’s not all about 21 year old who we can sell on at a big profit.

We're paying him the best part of £30k p/w I'm told. Doesn't strike me as a back-up salary...

Given Watford wanted to take him ‘home’ and make him captain, and we blew them out the water on wages he’ll definitely be on a decent whack.

If he plays his part in getting us up then it’s money well spent.

Anyone know which positions he played in the PL last year? I have vague recollections of him on the wing at goodison park (as a sub perhaps)

Considering O'Shea can step across if needed and we have Johnson, do you think Clarke might leave be sold?

I like the signing especially with Morsy leaving, valuable experience and he can't have lost much physically if he can play that many PL games in a season still. Honestly could see him playing a fair bit!

Really think it's an astute pick up, esp on a 1 year deal. Played plenty of games last year. Still fit of a fiddle. Think he'll sunrise some

And on a one year deal, even at those wages it probably works out the same, if not cheaper, than getting a Prem loan of similar quality in.

More likely his squad replacement.

Unless the wages are high like Ben Johnson and they decide to let him go but I hope not.

Aren’t we paying Johnson a fairly significant wage also? Wouldn’t this mean we have two guys at right back on £100k a week between them potentially?

I’d be amazed if we had that at start of season, Johnson to go surely? Clarke as back up…

I can’t get excited with this. We may as well have given Morsey another decent contract and he isn’t as old !

Blew them away…For a 40 year old…..Says a lot about our transfer business so far this window.

As a player, think he is terrific, had an absolute stellar career, always thought he was the consummate professional.

If we move on one of Johnson or H.Clarke, it will prove to be a really good addition, if we don’t it is a slightly strange one given he’ll be on substantial wages, and it’s not an area we need to strengthen massively, or take up a squad slot.

Probably one that can judge better as the window closes.

Not sure on the relegation clause etc or what Young has signed on but I hope not, Johnson is versatile and would be very good at this level IMO.

Don't particularly rate Clarke defensively and not a player I could ever see stepping up a division.

I hope this works out, because it's probably visiting the club a fortune.

This is right on some many levels and I totally get why we might go for him, but hes an injury away from an expensive crock on the books, even if it is only for one season. It'll be interesting to see how he does at Birmingham....and McKenna's intense training sessions. Good luck Ashley, and a warm welcome to Town.

That's true of every signing though. He's always had a good record with injuries, has played a lot of games at PL level in his late 30s. If we didn't sign someone because they might get injured and we'll lose money on it, then we'd never sign anyone.

If he's on 30k a week, it's only 1.5m over the season. A snip for what we are getting.

Young brings a lot of experience and hopefully, provided he already has his coaching badges, will be a valuable member of KMc’s coaching staff going forward.

Will have to wait and see how we line up. We have three very good central defenders, Young & Davis as wingbacks and in reserve Woolfenden, Clarke, Townsend, Baggott & Johnson our defence looks strong.

Just need another midfielder & Striker and we are in a good place.

Has he says he wants to be a coach somewhere or are we just assuming it because he is 40? I think we need to see the deal for what it is now, a PL player coming in on a one year deal at at the end of his career. You can't play 32 PL games at 39/40 if you're not in top shape, I am not even worried about his age for next year. He will be a great player a level down. he as good enough to start somewhere in the PL.

Remember what he did to us for Everton at PR last season . . . masterpiece in shthousery - something we were very poor on last year.

Given a choice, rather have him on our side than against.

I’m really pleased with this signing
Experience personified
He was an as53hole against us at PR

Both Clark and Johnston could learn a lot from him. 40 is the new 30.
I was fitter and played my best football when I was 41, at a much lower level. we all age differently.
