He's like an over-excited terrier. We know he wasn’t good enough for the Premier league. And there’s no guarantee he will be good enough for the championship even. And he may even be sold this window.
But while we have him as an option off the bench, he might just show something. There’s a player in there but for all his running, his last second decision making is so often awry. I can’t help but think McKenna could coach it out of him to be more decisive. If he does, there’s definitely something there. His energy and willingness to try and try and try ought to be commended. He came on yesterday and you could see him wanting to change the game.
If there’s any player this season I’d love to see go on a scoring run and gain confidence, it would be him. |  |

In a couple of weeks time it's likely to be Akpom coming off the bench rather than Ali, which is obviously a massive step up. Don't think you'll find many better 3rd choice strikers in this division than Ali to be honest [Post edited 9 Aug 10:55]

I’ve been quite a critic of Ali and who can forget the penalty miss.
But his finishes in pre season were excellent.
And I liked his performance last night on the right and a lot of what he was doing.
Yes at times the lack of real technical polish showed. But if you asked the Brum players he was up against he was a real handful. |  |

The fact he's still there speaks volumes I think, and that's a compliment. He came from League Two to a championship promotion winning team, played in the PL albeit a handful of times, got a loan to a championship club, and it's set to be third choice in (hopefully) another promotion winning team.
He's clearly got some mental toughness about him, and I think he's got enough in the way of attributes to prove useful. |  |

Totally agree.
He’s fine as a third choice striker and can play the wide roles as an impact sub. Teams are going to have to work really hard against us so the last 20 minutes will be a fertile area for us. Direct runners are the last thing our opponents are going to want to see | |

He has a wonderful knack of squirming free with the ball when he shouldnt do, which surprises defenders.
Finishes well. Strong and agressive.
He has been unfairly maligned by many. We have yet to see if he can be what we need. Not really had the chance. Last night, his only failure to do the right thing came from what was clearly a slip rather than bad choices. | | | |

It wasn't a balance issue, his foot slipped from under him while changing direction. On modern, over-watered (often semi-synthetic weave) pitches, that happens to everyone. |  |

That was happening whilst our multi million pound stars were on the pitch as well. You could be referring to Matusiwa, Ogbene Clarke, Szmodics, Hirst. Albeit not big money signings, but Johnson, Davis, Taylor and Hirst mucked up moves last night as well. Al-Hamidi gave us an outlet, a spark. Yes, we may sign someone who is seen as an upgrade, but he did fine last night. | |
