I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… 21:49 - Aug 18 with 3946 views | SitfcB | …but now I’m just annoyed at them and Leeds. How jarring is it we had one home win all season (first overall win wasn’t until November) yet they both with their first games, at home. Pathetic from us. But the fixture list was also pathetic. Blub.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 07:13 - Aug 19 with 670 views | Nutkins_Return | We would have needed everything to go right after back to back. Injuries, transfers etc. Leeds base squad and experience was higher. Sunderland have built well signing talented young players who have grown with team but they do look to have done better recruitment. I refuse to get bitter about our fantastic journey. We are in a tough spot immediately now but thanks to that journey we have brilliant resources to change our story and be successful again over the next couple of years. I want us to go up this season and we can. Pragmatically we can also build a platform this season and be strong challenges beyond next as well worst case. I'm confident next time in prem we will have a better base and chance.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 21:52 - Aug 18 by FrimleyBlue | Probably controversial and I don't want to come across to harshly but both have looked like prem competitive sides compared to our efforts. Physical. Fast. Dangerous. |
I can’t speak for Sunderland, but watching Leeds last night - whether you like them or not they - looked very good, I was impressed with them. Leeds look like they have recruited physically big players, with a good pedigree and are decent footballers to help them bridge that step up in quality. 2 wins for the promoted sides in the first weekend of the EPL. Took until October, last season when any of the 3 promoted sides actually won a game!! Early days, but I actually hope the promoted sides do well, the last couple of seasons the tepid efforts of those promoted sides hasn’t been a good look.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 07:55 - Aug 19 with 620 views | bsw72 | Leeds have signed 10 players who appear to be over 10 feet tall. They may struggle to match some of the more skilful sides, but they won't get outmuscled easily. The way I see it is that Sunderland and Leeds have seen how we struggled and has tried to address the issues we saw over the season, so basically we are helping these championship promoted sides achieve what they will this year.

If they all stay up, it weakens the league for us next season. If they all come back down, the 17 just get further away from us.

It was a terrible fixture list for a newly promoted club and dis nothing but knock the stuffing out of us.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 08:57 - Aug 19 with 507 views | SWLondonBlue93 | Probably for the best that people move on from last season. We could have handpicked our fixtures and we still wouldn't have got close to staying up, we were simply nowhere near good enough.
I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 09:03 - Aug 19 with 502 views | BlueySwede | If one or two promoted teams survives this season (preferably Sunderland and Burnley), that is only good for us if we go back up. But it´s a long season. Everton always finds a way to survive. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Hit the nail on the head. Both Leeds/ Sunderland were far better prepared for promotion than we were. We are now in a really healthy place with regards to a very strong Championship squad, the ability to generate great commercial revenues and sell assets for much more than we bought them for. All being well, that will allow us to take more calculated risks if all being well, we do go up this season.

Indeed. We are well behind Leeds and Sunderland in our development, but we're getting there. Anything worth doing is hard and takes time. People need more patience.

Agree, Leeds are at a much higher base than we were, which makes the fact we managed to outpace them to promotion such an achievement. They went up with Italy internationals like Gnoto, 8 figure signings like James, Rodon & Piroe, Harrison back from a PL loan, Ampadu etc. They've added some wily PL experience as well now in Calvert-Lewin and Longstaff. Not to mention the off the pitch bits having spent 3 of the past 5 years in the Premier league before this season vs. us who hadn't been there in 22 years. We were miles behind the curve and playing catch up from day 1. In hindsight we can point to our recruitment and wonder what a different strategy might've yielded, with a bit more emphasis on the proven 'here and now', but given the trends of promoted clubs its still odds on not to result in a favourable outcome and we would likely be in a worse place now for it.
I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 09:28 - Aug 19 with 430 views | JimmyJazz | How do you suppose Burnley feel this morning - the other 2 sides both won and they lost at a ground we actually won at last season. They might well feel it's all over already

I think Spurs will be a different proposition this season to be fair, Frank is a massive step on. They took PSG to penalties last week and were unlucky not to win that, Burnley certainly had the toughest opening fixture by some distance. Leeds & Sunderland couldn't have hand picked better opening fixtures, other than perhaps Brentford at home. I still think Burnley will go down, but they've got Sunderland at home this weekend, that's a better fixture for them. Burnley, Sunderland, Leeds, Brentford, Wolves, West Ham. It'll be 3 from that 6, Everton wont be in trouble under Moyes and everyone else looks a level above.

I hope all 3 stay up. Not only is it good for football but we have to work on the belief we will go up. If we do... those teams should be infinitely more catchable having only had 1 season in the PL than established sides that have been there for years.

It’s a bit of a make believe story that Sunderland were a club that could just whirl into PL action because they were there more recently than us. They had no parachute cash or anything, they were in League 1 a lot more recently than the PL and got run into the ground by their ownership. There was even a documentary about it. They were crap as well, even in the playoffs but got quite lucky, they weren’t quietly building a PL team in the champ. They’ve cashed in their lottery ticket and have given themselves (I believe) a decent chance by doing the opposite to what we were done with 130M.

The one crumb of comfort from that start was we got Liverpool and Man City before they were quite at top gear, which may have minimised the hammerings but imagine the feel good factor if we had won immediately?

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 22:06 - Aug 18 by Leutard | I don't think it can be understated quite how much those two opening fixtures might have dampened our season. Muric's confidence was nuked at Man city, and for a team that had thrived on mental togetherness an early win may well have made us a hell of a lot harder to beat. |
Yes, compare and contrast with our first home game back in the Prem in August 2000 v. Man Utd. Wilnis' goal & 1-1 result really gave us a confidence that buoyed us for the rest of that season and our 5th place in it.

I was pleased for Sunderland on Saturday… on 22:01 - Aug 18 by bournemouthblue | A bit more jarred they got two of the easier sides first up, whilst we got Liverpool and Man City back to back Leeds have gone up with a stronger squad ultimately and Sunderland have recruited very well I suspect Sunderland's style probably is more conducive to the PL also given they like to absorb pressure and break |
Sunderland were always going to recruit well. Their European based trading model has been up and running for 5 years Promotion meant they could move up a level in budget. Ultimately we recruited with a 3 year plan in mind. We are in year 2.

Didn’t think Leeds offered anything at the sharp end.., but they do have DCL and another striker to come in. Experience counts at that level.., our buy young and develop strategy has already gone out of the window and failed dramatically, with zero retention. We are poor strategically the last 18 months.., whoever’s job that is, is way off the standard in that area…, new people in key areas off the pitch required. The same people making the same mistakes, is getting the same outcomes. Double blub.

Yeah I was thinking more of Leeds to be honest, but anyway, we were in League 1 more recently than Sunderland... and went up to the Prem with half our team having played in League 1. I doubt there are many Sunderland League 1 players in their Prem squad. And as I've said, it's one game. It's not a big enough sample size to say they're going to do the opposite of us.

I'd like them all to survive purely because if we make it back up this year it's got to increase our chances of staying up next year. I think the problem last year (aside from us just not being good enough) was that all the teams were established prem teams, so even though a few clubs had bad seasons, their drop off wasn't really enough to give us someone to chase down. If we go up and somehow Sunderland, Leeds and Burnley all stay up, they will be a year ahead of us but there's a better chance at least one might not kick on and give us a realistic chance of finishing above them.
