Egeli replacement en route on 10:29 - Aug 26 by bsw72 | The trouble with judging a transfer window before it is shut, is that it is not designed for instant returns but to deliver success against the overall aims which is surely promotion? I really don't understand the need for immediate judgement - we may struggle through Sept / Oct as players settle but stay in touch with the top 6, then things click, the signings gel and we go on a 25 game unbeaten run which puts us top and gets us promoted - that would suggest the window is a success - we just don't know now . . . Any judgement talking about a poor window in August is premature before the manager has time to fully settle the squad and build on it's skills. Finally, before anyone starts on the "we have had months to prepare for this etc", yes, we have known that we would be playing Champ footy probably since February, but knowing this vs the players you want to sign being available, getting deals ageed and players in are two very different things. Dammit - didn't want to get drawn into another transfer thread but this one suckered me in . . . . |

Egeli replacement en route on 10:43 - Aug 26 by Guthrum | I wouldn't say the window has been bad. Cajuste, Akpom and Young are cracking signings at this level. Matusiwa seems good. Kipre and McAteer look useful from their brief appearances so far. We got decent money for Delap, very good fees for Hutchinson and Broadhead. Two of those were always more likely than not to be off this window. Losing Tuanzebe and Burgess was disappointing, but neither surprising. The former wanted to stay in the Prem and the latter was falling down the pecking order at RCB. Last season there were many comments that Morsy was looking less mobile and capable than he had been, so it shouldn't have been a surprise when he was off, too. As I said in another thread, the issue is less personnel than how well the team is functioning. Which is McKenna's department, not Ashton's. It's all very well for people to keep on about how "we should have done our business early", but everyone knows that's pie in the sky. Always has been, since transfer windows were introduced. A large proportion of the business happens at the very end, even on deadline day itself. Players and clubs don't want to make up their minds too early, there is almost always the chance of better options or more money coming along. |
There's actually a good argument to say that if you get your transfer business done early, you're picking up unambitious players who consider themselves lucky to get a gig at the level you're already at. (Take note Norwich City )

Egeli replacement en route on 11:30 - Aug 26 by Guthrum | Time for prep is all very well, but we are not allowed to actually kick off the process of approaching clubs/players until the same time as everyone else (excepting those in the final months of contracts). All it means is we have a well-constructed list. It doesn't give any head-start in actual negotiations. Nor does it hurry up decisions to let a player go, or that player's decisionmaking. It certainly doesn't make ambitious targets any more available. In addition, we don't know all of our own players who might get approached and thus what gaps need to be filled. Having a long time to think about things is not necessarily the advantage people think it is. Things are ready to start, yes. But it doesn't make the process itself go any quicker and that depends upon other parties, not just our readiness. I do think that Ashton may have given too many hostages to fortune with bullish talk, raising unjustified expectations. But perhaps that's just who he is - and it has delivered pretty good results since he arrived. |
Then perhaps Ashton should have just kept quiet and let the signings occur naturally instead of shooting his mouth off being “well prepared” and promising to make signings early. Just like at work, it’s important to manage the expectations of the client (in this case, the fans). Being conservative won’t be as bad as talking big and then failing to deliver. That’s perhaps why my Bristol City mate gave him the moniker NATO - No Action, Talk Only
Egeli replacement en route on 15:07 - Aug 26 with 2019 views | OldFart71 | I think we need maybe three or four players in. Two of which need to be marquee signings. So far I would say they have been moderate to lukewarm.

I mean, for all the anxiety in this window the one thing nobody can accuse Ashton of in the last four years is a lack of action – let's not be silly.

For me it all comes down to the bullish talk that you mention. The local press wouldn't have referred to the target list being 'scary' without approval from MA. The moment you authorise the local media putting out stuff like that (no doubt, as I mentioned at the time, carefully timed to coincide with the ST renewal window), you make a rod for your own back when you then struggle to land said 'scary' targets. Six days still to go, but there are certainly some cheques out there that MA has yet to be able to cash.

But then the fans get upset because the club "aren't talking to them", or "being ambitious enough" or something. Just think how much grumbling there would have been with Delap heading out of the door and Ashton saying "We'll have to wait and see on signings, it's going to be tricky and some things may not happen until the last few days of the window."

Just take a moment to count how many players Ashton has signed since he began working for ITFC. Then take another moment to add up how many he has sold, and calculate the profits he has made. You could call him that, but you would be wider of the mark than a Jay Emmanuel Thomas "effort". Do you remember him? He was our marquee signing, in this division, in the days before Ashton.

Apples and oranges, you're making it sound like it's Ashton attracting these players and not some Arizona pension fund capital. The finances are slightly different when we were in the market for JET. He has also said their is more pressure to get the bigger deals right. So he is setting the standards for himself.

Yes, but he was saying he is "No Action, Talk Only". Which is ludicrous. Lots and lots and lots of transfers in and out during Ashton's tenure.

Absolutely ridiculous. Like on a scale of 1-10 I put that as 10 on the ridiculous scale. You can find some faults with Ashton but no action is the most idiotic take you could have. We've had 2 promotions, a complete overhaul of the stadium which is barely recognisable now inside and out, a huge increase in backroom staff. Big upgrades to the training facilities and brand new complex being built. Pretty shameful to take a cheap shot on 'no action' because you are frustrated with the window which hasn't even shut yet. Really? We might not like his action, but to say it’s all talk and no action just isn’t true is it. Lots of players bought and sold at a big profit, cat 1 academy, transformed stadium, ….

I should hope so with our funding! Some good (especially at the lower level), some the jury is still out and some not so good (especially in the PL window) thus far I would say.

Fair point about setting expectations, BUT Ashton did not ‘promise’ early signings. He said they would be trying to complete business as soon as they could, and were already working on deals. ”We're onto deals now,” he said. “The reality is when they fall is when they fall, but we'll do them as soon as we can.” This is setting expectations quite realistically. If people want to remember/interpret them differently, that’s a problem with them, not Ashton.
